On this day in 2014, the Fifth Annual Darius Rucker and Friends Benefit raised $120,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at Nashville’s Wildhorse Saloon. Darius was joined by Kenny Rogers, Eli Young Band and David Nail. Other performers include Cassadee Pope, Clint Black, Corey Smith and Thompson Square.
The Seventh Annual Darius Rucker and Friends Benefit will be held on June 6th of this year.
The Oskaloosa Girls’ Soccer team has made a lot of history this year and was looking to check one more thing off the list Tuesday night against Clear Creek-Amana. As the storm clouds came rolling in to Tiffin, the season unfortunately came to a halt with a defeat against #13th ranked Clear Creek-Amana with the final score of 2-1.
Clear Creek-Amana got off to a fast start with a goal just 45 seconds into the game which put the Indians on their heels for a few minutes. After getting settled in, the Indians would go on to dominate a lot of the first half and scored the equalizer by freshman Aleeya Cheney putting in a cross from senior Jackie Reif. The score would remain tied 1-1 going into half.
The score would remain the same for the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half until, Clear Creek-Amana was able to get the go-ahead goal. The Indians had several chances in tying up the game, but unfortunately nothing bounced their way. The loss ends the high school careers of Jackie Reif, Taylor Seaton, Andie Reif, and Sandra Blom.
“These four girls played their hearts out last night trying to get one more game,” said Head Coach Jodi Steinlage. “They have done a lot for this season and this program and we are going to miss them. However, they can be proud in what they have accomplished at Oskaloosa High School.”
“We are very proud of the girls and this season,” Steinlage continued. “With a new coach, it can be hard when they just come in and change things up, but the girls were up to the challenge. We have a lot to be excited about in the coming years for the girls’ soccer program. The future is bright.”
Some season highlights for the Indians include the team having the lowest goals allowed with only allowing 17 goals in 17 games giving the lowest goals against average ever with 1.0 goals a game. 6 of their 7 losses came to ranked teams with 6 of those teams playing in the regional finals to go to state.
The Indians scores the most goals in a season with 64, recorded the most wins and the first ever double digit winning season.
At 6:00 p.m. a few dark clouds started to roll in above the Lacey Recreation Complex on Tuesday evening. After about 15 minutes, Little League players were catching rain drops in addition to baseballs and softballs, but that didn’t stop the fun. Fans from Pella, Bussey and Oskaloosa could be found under umbrellas, blankets and at the picnic tables under the large canopies cheering on their youth. School is out and summer camps have already started! Osky Soccer Camp kicked off on Wednesday and will run through Friday at the Lacey Recreation Complex. Campers, ranging in age from 4-13, are focusing on the basics and foundations of the game. The coaches are teaching on physical, technical, tactical and physiological aspects of the game through exercises, mini games and scrimmages, but of course the primary focus is to have fun while learning. Blake Shelton’s New Album If I’m Honest has debuted at #1 on the Billboard Country Albums Chart and the album’s lead single “Came Here To Forget” has also reached the top of the country charts giving Shelton his 17th consecutive #1 single and 22nd overall. To make this news even sweeter, Shelton’s new animated film The Angry Birds Movie recently topped the North American Box Office following its release.
The Oskaloosa baseball team was back in action Wednesday night in a single varsity game against Knoxville, which you heard on 99.5 FM/740 AM KMZN, the KMZN mobile app, and radiokmzn.com. This was the third meeting of the year between the two teams already, and the Indians completed the clean sweep with a 4-1 victory on the road.
Seth Sarver got the start on the mound for Osky and he did not disappoint. The junior threw strikes early and often and held the Panthers to just two hits and one unearned run in a complete game. He only threw 66 pitches in seven innings of work, 43 of which were strikes.
The offense got the job done in the early going, as the Indians plated two runs in the first and third innings off of Knoxville starter Rylan Cox. Peyton Crouse had a two-run single with two outs in the first to get the scoring started, and Joe Sterner had a clutch two-out, two-run ground-rule double to get Oskaloosa to that four run mark. The defense would do the rest in support of Sarver.
The only inning Knoxville scored was in the fifth, as Trent Davis hit a two-out double to get on base. Following a couple of bobbled balls ruled errors, Davis would score, but that was all the Panther order could muster against Sarver.
Oskaloosa is now 4-1 on the young season, while Knoxville is 2-5.
The Indians will be back in action Thursday night as they go on the road to take on Centerville in a single varsity game. The action will begin around 7:30 PM, and you can hear the broadcast on 99.5 FM/740 AM KMZN, the KMZN mobile app, and radiokmzn.com. The pregame show will begin around 7:15.
OSKALOOSA — Get your tackle box and pole ready for some fishing. No fishing license will be required this weekend only, from Friday, June 3rd through Sunday, June 5th.
“The DNR (Department of Natural Resources) always has a free fishing weekend for residents of Iowa,” said Laura DeCook, Naturalist for Mahaska County Conservation Board (MCCB). “People that are residents of Iowa, 16 and older, do not need a fishing license. It’s intended to get people out and fishing.”
From noon to 1 p.m. Friday, June 3, stop by and enjoy a picnic at Russell Wildlife Area.
“We will cook up some fish, probably catfish, and hand out some recipes and enjoy a quick lunch out here,” said DeCook. Later that afternoon will be the fishing activities. “People can come and go as they want. From 5 to 6 p.m., we’ll provide some hot dogs to cook over a campfire, and people can bring their own drink and side dish and have a campfire picnic. After that, we’ll do some fishing and sign up all the kids so we know who’s there and keep track of what they catch.
“This weekend is nice because people can fish for free. We wanted to do an event for the whole family where people can come out to Russell Wildlife, which is a public area, and go fishing,” said DeCook. “We’ll have activities to teach kids all about fishing, and have some hands-on activities, and give them a chance to fish. We’re going to have a little contest amongst the kids on Friday, to see who can catch the largest in length and the smallest in length; and they can win a trophy.”
Help will be provided, so don’t worry if you’ve never baited a hook or cast a line before. There will be fishing poles available to simple but helpful sur-borrow, and MCCB will be providing night crawlers for bait. There’s no shortage of outdoor fun coming up.
Adventure week will be held from Monday, June 6th through Friday, June 10th from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. each day. “I put this together to provide people an opportunity to try different outdoor activities,” said DeCook. “These activities are for everyone, not just kids – there’s no age limit.”
Monday, June 6th, will be spent fishing in the Russell Wildlife Area ponds. Unlike the previous weekend, a fishing license will be required for all participants 16 and older. There will be some fishing poles provided.
Basic outdoor survival skills will be taught on Tuesday, June 7th, while hiking around Russell Wildlife Area. “We’ll go off trail and enjoy the park and talk about some vival skills for outdoors,” said DeCook.
Wednesday, June 8th, will be spent learning archery and bow fishing skills.
“Everyone that comes will have a chance to try out each of those,” said DeCook. Thursday will feature exploring the outdoors, including off-trail hiking, fossil digging and bird watching. Come hungry to the Friday, June 8th activity, outdoor cooking. “We’ll be cooking over a fire here, if anyone wants to bring their own recipes or something to cook,” said De Cook, “or try out what we provide.”
“We want to encourage people to go outdoors,” said DeCook, “and it’s all free. Come all days or pick and choose what afternoons you want to come.”

The song, which is considered one of her signature and breakthrough singles, helped lead her to her first #1 album on the Billboard Country Albums Chart.
Being a contestant on American Idol more than 10 years ago put Carrie Underwood up for a lot of criticism from online bullies. Carrie tells US Weekly she was a little heavier than she is now during her time on American Idol, “That was the first time I was exposed to the public talking about me, so it was impossible not to look and see what they were saying. Apparently I was fat. Of course I wasn’t, but sometimes words people chose are not the nicest.”
On this day in 2011, The Band Perry learned that their #1 smash hit, “If I Die Young,” achieved Double Platinum Certification from the RIAA for sales exceeding two million copies. The song was released in June of 2010 as the single from the group’s self-titled debut album. Since then, the album has become 6x Platinum certified.
