Concerns For Election Day

MAHASKA — For those hitting the polls on Tuesday for the June Primary Election, the Mahaska County Auditor’s Office has compiled a helpful question and answer list for those who still have questions before the big day.

What if I go to the polls and they tell me I can’t vote because I requested an absentee ballot?

You can surrender your unvoted absentee ballot to the election officials at your precinct. If you requested an absentee ballot by mail and did not receive it or do not have it with you, the precinct official will ask you to fill out a form saying that you did not receive an absentee ballot. You can then
vote a provisional ballot, which will be put into an envelope. On Thursday, June 9th, the Special Precinct Board will consider provisional ballots.

What do I do if I have moved since the last time I voted?

If you still live in the county where you were last registered to vote, go to the correct polling site for your new address. Take a current picture identification with your current address with you. You will be asked to complete a voter registration form with your new address, and you can vote
in the usual manner. If your ID is not current, call the Auditor’s Office 641-673-7148 for additional instructions.

What if I don’t have my voter registration card anymore?

If you are registered at the correct precinct, you do not need your voter registration card to vote. If you are asked for identification, show your current
driver’s license or other current picture identification.

What if I go to the polls and they tell me I am at the wrong precinct?

You will be instructed where your correct voting precinct is located and vote there.

What if I go to the polls and they tell me I am not registered to vote?

You can register to vote at the polls on Election Day. You will be required to show proof of residency and proof of identity. The best form of ID is a valid Iowa driver’s license with your current address. If your Iowa driver’s license has an old address on it, please contact the Auditor’s Office 641-673-7148 for additional requirements.

Can another voter attest for me if I do not have proof of residence or identity?

If you do not have proof of residence and identity, a registered voter in the precinct where you reside may attest to your identity and residence as long as the attester has not attested for anyone else and was not attested for in this election. You will both be required to sign an oath.

Falsely attesting or being attested for is a class “D” felony. If you do not have proof of residence or identity and do not have anyone who can attest to your residence and identity, you will be allowed to vote a provisional ballot.

You will have until noon, Thursday, June 9, to present the proper ID information in the Auditor’s Office.

The special precinct board will meet Thursday, June 9, to consider provisional ballots.

Stovall And Repeat Winners Dominate At Osky

Oskaloosa, Iowa (June 2nd, 2016) – No racing occur on Wednesday at the Southern Iowa Speedway this week because the speedway hosted Thursday Night Thunder featuring the Lucas Oil MLRA Late Models. All five IMCA divisions on the card for a Weekly Points Night. The Night was sponsored by Shawn’s Hay Grinding, Supreme Lawn & Landscape, KBOE Radio, Pepsi Mahaska Bottling, Ulrich Ford, Vanderbeek Truck Accessories, Tom & Cindy Drost, Dynamic Drivelines and Bill and Ray’s Truck Repair & Wrecker Service.

Jesse Stovall won the Lucas Oil MLRA Late Models meanwhile Cayden Carter remains perfect on weekly racing action in the IMCA Stock Cars. Other feature winners were all repeat winners and they included Curtis VanDerWal (IMCA SportMods), Dustin Griffiths (IMCA Hobby Stocks), Bill Whalen (IMCA Sport Compacts) and Ricky Thornton Jr (IMCA Modifieds).

First feature of the night was the ten lap IMCA Sport Compacts feature. Bill Whalen Jr wrestled the lead from Shane Evans on lap one but the caution came out on lap three for Cody VanDusen coming to a stop in turn two. Whalen had to battle with Evans and seventh place starter Brad Havel, Havel took second and grabbed the top spot on lap five. Havel and Whalen than dueled it out for the race the lead and it was the driver nicknamed “Happy Feet” taking the lead back on lap nine. Whalen went on to take his second win of the season at Osky ahead of Evans, Havel, John Gill and Lincoln Schrock.

Up next was the Lucas Oil MLRA Late Models 30 lap feature event and the top 16 cars were lined up based on passing points. Jesse Stovall and Jordan Yaggy started on the front row and it was Stovall taking advantage and pulling away but the first caution came out on lap eight for Jay Johnson coming to a rest on the backstretch. That did not bother Stovall because he got great restart and had a big lead only to see it wiped away when another caution was displayed on lap 17 for Dave Eckrich in turn one. Stovall got another great restart but with five laps to go when some smoke began to come out of Stovall machine just as he was encountering lap traffic, that allowed Yaggy and Rodney Sanders to get within a few car lengths but Stovall held on to take the win. Yaggy finished second, Sanders was third, Chad Simpson was fourth and Jimmy Mars was fifth.

After initial pole sitter Taylor Elliott opted to go to the tail that meant Trent Brink and Brett Lowry set the pace of the 16 lap KBOE Radio IMCA SportMod feature event and it was Lowry taking the lead early. Lowry maintained the lead until a pair of cautions came out on lap eight for Colton Livezey spinning on frontstretch and on lap nine for Danny Brau in turn one. Lowry now had to contend with Curtis VanDerWal but Lowry seemed to be no match as VanDerWal took the lead away and would go on to take his third win of the season at Osky. Lowry ran second, Carter VanDenBerg started ninth and came home third. Jason McDaniel and Matthew Van Gelder round out the top five.

Cayden Carter redrew the pole for the 16 lap Budweiser IMCA Stock Cars feature event but had to wait to take advantage as the caution came out on the initial start when Greg Gill spun exiting turn four. Carter jumped out to the lead ahead of Derrick Agee and Nathan Wood. Carter went on to take his fifth consecutive win at Osky, keeping him perfect on weekly racing competition. Wood, Agee, Mike Hughes and Todd Reitzler finished second through fifth respectively.

Danny Thrasher led the opening lap of the 15 lap Pepsi Cola IMCA Hobby Stocks feature but shortly after the caution came out when Christian Huffman spun in turn four. Thrasher saw Brad Stephens and Dustin Griffiths behind him on the restart but continued to hold them off until Griffith was able to edge out Thrasher at the line on lap six. The caution came out on lap seven for Jared Stephens coming to a stop against the turn two wall. Griffiths got a great restart and went on to take his fourth win in a row at Osky. Brad Stephens held off challenges from Bill Bonnett for second. Thrasher came across in fourth and Jamie Songer was fifth.

Final feature of the night was the Musco Lighting IMCA Modifieds 20 lap feature event. Hunter Marriott grabbed the lead on lap one but it was fourth place starter Colt Mather taking the top spot away on lap two. Mather looked to be heading toward victory meanwhile Ricky Thornton Jr took second away from Marriott on lap eight, Thornton set his sights on getting be Mather and Thornton would do just that on lap 14. Thornton led the remaining laps to go on and take his third win at Osky. Mather finished second, Richie Gustin was third, Jacob Murray was fourth and Hunter Marriott was fifth.

The Southern Iowa Speedway is back to its normal Wednesday Night racing action next week as it will be Pro-Line Buildings Night. Hot Laps at 7pm and Racing at 7:30pm.

On this day in 1998, George Strait enjoyed the “top tune” on the chart with “I Just Want To Dance With You.” The song was released in April of that year and was the first single for his album, One Step at a Time. “I Just Want To Dance With You” was Strait’s 34th number one single on the Billboard Hot country Singles & Tracks Chart.

Next Stop Pocono Speedway

Next stop Pocono Speedway for Sunday’s Axalta “We Paint Winners” 400, the fourteenth race of the year that kicks off the second half of the Sprint Cup Series’ regular season. Martin Truex Junior is coming off a dominating victory last weekend in the Coca-Cola 600 and is the defending race winner at Pocono. The last driver with back-to- back victories in the track’s spring race was Jeff Gordon in 1996 and 1997 … With Truex’s victory Sunday night, the list of Sprint Cup race winners this season grew to eight. If there are nine more drivers who reach Victory Lane over the final thirteen regular-season races, then there’ll be one driver with a race win to his credit that will not get a spot on the 2016 Chase Grid – which will include only the sixteen top eligible drivers based primarily on race wins. There are three drivers who won last year but are still without a victory in 2016: Kurt Busch, Dale Earnhardt Junior and Joey Logano. Busch and Earnhardt are two-time winners at Pocono. Logano has one victory there, in 2012.

NASCAR X-Finity Series Runs On “The Tricky Triangle” This Weekend

The NASCAR X-Finity Series also runs on “The Tricky Triangle” this weekend, with Saturday’s inaugural Pocono Green 250. Daniel Suarez of Joe Gibbs Racing leads the standings by fourteen points over Elliott Sadler. Teams got two practice sessions on Thursday with rookie Erik Jones posting the fastest overall speed of 172.914 miles per hour. Fellow rookie Brandon Jones was second-quick with Kyle Busch, Ty Dillon and Suarez completing the top five. Justin Allgaier had the best average speed over ten consecutive laps – 168.843 miles per hour. There are two more practice sessions today with qualifying Saturday morning.

Toyota heads into the twelfth race of the season with a fifteen-point advantage over Chevrolet in the chase for the Bill France Performance Award, which annually goes to the manufacturer that accumulates the most championship points over the course of the season. Ford is a distant third with Dodge in last place. Toyota drivers have won seven of the year’s first eleven races: four by Busch, two for Jones and one by Denny Hamlin, last weekend in Charlotte …Jones leads the series with four poles.

CMT Announces New Category For CMT Music Awards

CMT has announced the brand new #SOCIALSUPERSTAR Category at the upcoming 2016 CMT Music Awards. The nominees for the inaugural #SOCIALSUPERSTAR award are Brett Eldredge, Blake Shelton, Jake Owen, Kelsea Ballerini, Lindsay Ell and Thomas Rhett.

Ottumwa’s Staggs Honored With Golden Plaque Of Distinction Award

Ottumwa’s Dan Staggs is the 2016 tennis recipient of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s Golden Plaque of Distinction Award. Staggs was presented his award at the 2016 State Tennis Tournament.

The IGHSAU’s Golden Plaque of Distinction Award honors the Iowa coach who has demonstrated a successful career while making notable contributions towards their school, community and coaching profession.

Staggs came to Ottumwa in the summer of 1958. He started the boys high school tennis team in 1964 and the girls in 1965. He also started a summer tennis program. Interest in tennis grew and eventually the community built 10 additional public courts, turned a parking lot into five summer courts, and built four courts at the Ottumwa Country Club. He has coached continually for 55 years, currently as a volunteer.

Staggs has had teams finish as high as second, qualified more than 50 teams for state, coaching a state champion in singles and co-ed doubles state champion.   He was selected to the Iowa Tennis Hall of Fame in 1982 and served stints on the IGHSAU and IHSAA Tennis Advisory Committees. In 2005 he was one of eight coaches selected for the National Coach of the Year. Staggs has had 47 players play at the collegiate level and had 697 wins in his career.  The City of Ottumwa named six courts after him in 2006.

 

Oskaloosa Baseball Pounds Out Win Over Centerville

The Oskaloosa baseball team was in action Thursday night against Centerville in a high-scoring affair as heard on the Mahaska Zone Network. The Indians would have a big offensive outburst late to take the win, 17-8.

 

Osky would try to keep their top arms fresh for Friday’s conference doubleheader against Pella Christian, and that required Alex DeJong to get the start on the mound. DeJong had some struggles, allowing four runs in one inning of work. Tucker Nunnikhoven would come on and allow three runs in the second inning in relief.

 

Luckily for Oskaloosa, even though they had allowed 7 runs in the first two innings, the offense was clicking. Osky had 8 runs of their own in those two innings, so when Head Coach Clint Gingerich called upon sophomore Nick Harrington to pitch starting in the third inning, the Indians had a one run lead.

 

Harrington would not disappoint, pitching the last five innings of the game, allowing only two hits and one unearned run. He struck out six and walked only two. The performance was exactly what the Indians needed if they were to save their top arms for the Pella Christian doubleheader. Osky’s offense would tack on nine more runs over the last three innings to give Harrington plenty of wiggle room.

 

Offensively, Osky would get plenty of production, as all nine spots in the lineup reached base. The major offensive stars for the Indians were Blake VanVeldhuizen and Bennett Spry.

 

VanVeldhuizen went 4 for 5 with four doubles, five RBI, and a run scored (Brandt Brown scored a run running for him in the 7th). Spry helped set the table for the clean-up hitter, as he went 4 for 5 out of the #2 slot with three runs scored and two driven in.

 

Oskaloosa is now 5-1 on the young season, and Centerville fell to 5-2.

 

Oskaloosa will face Pella Christian on the road Friday night in a doubleheader to kick off Little Hawkeye Conference play. The first pitch is scheduled for 5:30 PM. You can hear the broadcast on 99.5 FM/740 AM, the KMZN mobile app, and radiokmzn.com beginning around 5:15.

Meetings Slated For Next Week

OSKALOOSA — A number of meetings open to the public will take place at the beginning of next week, and one will even be held today. This is the time to attend public meetings and get information about what is going on in your community that may or may not be applicable to you based on
where you live and those issues you may deem important.

This article lists what meetings are going to happen, when and where, as well as a brief rundown of what may be discussed, according to each respective agenda as provided. Many of these agendas, aside from the Oskaloosa Community School District sessions, are available to the public at www.oskaloosaiowa.org.

Historic Preservation Commission

Today (June 3) at noon the Historic Preservation Commission will meet in the City Council Chambers of City Hall, located at 220 S. Market Street. This work study session will be used to review Oskaloosa Municipal Code Chapter 15.50 – Historic Preservation.
Oskaloosa Airport Commission

The Oskaloosa Airport Commission will meet on Monday, June 6, at the Oskaloosa Municipal Airport, located at 2973 Urbana Avenue at 4:30 p.m. After routine happenings such as the approval of prior minutes, financial reports, and bills, those present will hear the Manager’s Report as well as old
business. Old business will include a culvert slip-lining project, field tiling, the continued discussion of removing a non-directional beacon, and windows in the maintenance hangar.
New business includes a tranfer of $35,240.05 from the Airport Fund (660) to the Airport Pavement Rehabilitation Project Fund (661). The Commission will also discuss a transfer of $9,900 from the Airport Fund (660) to the Airport Culvert Rehabilitation Fund (664). This amount, according to the agenda provided, is subject to change. They will also discuss an insurance renewal, a weather service international subscription, and weed control and landscaping. When they are done with all business on the agenda, the Commission will set a July meeting date and adjourn.

This meeting is subject to cancellation if a quorum is not present by 4:45 p.m.

Oskaloosa City Council

The Oskaloosa City Council will hold a study session and a regular session on Monday, June 6, in the Oskaloosa City Hall. The study session will begin at 5 p.m. and will focus on two main topics: directing staff to create a permanent easement acquisition policy for city council’s consideration, and
downtown parking time limits, restrictions, and other improvements.

Both of these topics will simply be up for discussion. As they are not action items, no votes will need to be cast at this time. Addressing the topic of easements: the 2015 Sanitary and Storm Sewer Improvements Project has now been delayed due to a failure to obtain the necessary easements, according to the agenda provided by the City. The easements have not been obtained because, according to the agenda, property owners have either not communicated with staff or would like compensation for the easements.

Currently, the City has not formally adopted a policy for handling these situations, however as a practice property owners have not been offered compensation for permanent or temporary easements. As for the discussion on parking, an explanation provided by the City via the study session agenda reads the following: “The City Council indicated an interest in reviewing the existing downtown parking restriction time limits. The existing parking time limit for on-street and public parking lots are inconsistent and may be a hardship for those using the downtown area.”

The Council will resume these study session discussions after the regular City Council meeting on Monday night, which will begin at 6 p.m., if needed.
The regular meeting will feature a public hearing on amending Table 17.08 B, pertaining to zoning district regulations and permitted uses for medium
retail services. This is only the first reading of the amendment. Council will also consider a resolution authorizing advancement of costs for an Urban Renewal Project and certification of expenses incurred by the city for payment, under Iowa Code Section 403.19. Afterwards, Council will then consider a resolution for preliminary approval of plans, specifications, form of contract, estimated cost, notice to bidders, setting a public hearing, and authorizing to receive and open bids for the West Mall (Hy-Vee) Parking Lot Rehabilitation Project. Oskaloosa School Board

Chad Vink, Board Secretary of the Oskaloosa Community School District, has announced that the regular meeting of the Board of Directors of the Oskaloosa Community School District has been moved from June 14 to Wednesday, June 8. The Board will be holding private employment hearings
at 6 p.m. in a closed session, and the regular session, open to the public, will be held at 7 p.m.

These meetings are typically held in the George Daily Auditorium.

Three Crew Chiefs Suspended

Three NASCAR Sprint Cup Series crew chiefs were fined and suspended with Brian Pattie getting hit the hardest with a two-race suspension and a $50,000 fine.

Pattie, crew chief for Greg Biffle and the No. 16 team, which was also assessed with the loss of 15 championship owner and 15 championship driver points, was issued a P3 penalty after violating sections 12-1; 20.4.1; 20.4.2 a,b,c; 12.5.3.4.1 c of the NASCAR Rule Book – illegal body measurements.

With the penalty, Biffle drops from 23rd to 24th in the standings.

Randall Burnett (crew chief for AJ Allmendinger) and Tony Gibson (crew chief for Kurt Busch) were each suspended one race (P3) and fined $20,000 after violating 10.11.3.4 a of the Rule Book, which states: “All tires, and wheels, and all five lug nuts must be installed in a safe and secure manner at all times during the Event.”

All three crew chiefs were placed on NASCAR probation through Dec. 31, including Tony Stewart’s crew chief Mike Bugarewicz after he was issued a P2 penalty for violating sections 20.4 b; 20. 4.2 a; 12.1; 12.5.3.3.2 d of the Rule Book in pre-race inspection – body design and surface conformance.

NASCAR also issued written warnings in Wednesday’s Penalty Report to the team’s of Paul Menard, Matt Kenseth, Aric Almirola, Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Menard will lose 15 minutes of practice time at Pocono Raceway after the team failed template inspection three times in pre-qualifying.
