Man Takes Plea Deal in Des Moines Chase Crash Death Case

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — An April sentencing hearing is scheduled for a Des Moines man charged with the crash death of another man during a police chase.

Online court records say 35-year-old Darnell Browder pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide while intoxicated and causing serious injury while driving intoxicated. Prosecutors dropped other charges in exchange for Browder’s pleas. His sentencing is set for April 27.

The charges stemmed from a brief chase by police Aug. 14 that ended when Browder crashed into another vehicle, killing 41-year-old Jason Hunt. A passenger in Hunt’s car was injured, as were Browder and a passenger in his car.

Carrie Underwood was affected by the tornadoes and storms that slammed much of the Nashville area on Wednesday morning (3/1). She took to Twitter to share, “Woke up to tornado sirens and hail…our chimney is currently in our driveway…tree limbs everywhere…feels like home. #okie” While Middle Tennessee did sustain much damage in the storms, there were no reports of any deaths at this point.

 

Jason Aldean Celebrates 40th Birthday With A Hockey Game

Jason Aldean’s wife, Brittany, surprised her hubby with a special trip to Steamboat Springs, Colorado, for his 40th birthday. While Jason celebrated his big 4-0 yesterday (2/28), the party actually got started on Monday (2/27) with Jason taking the ice to play hockey with a few of his buddies. Brittany took to Instagram to share a picture of Jason and his crew at the ice rink wearing hockey uniforms emblazoned with Aldean’s signature jack and ace of spades logo. Brittney also shared a picture of the two leaning in for a kiss in the locker room.

Psychiatrist Gets 2-Month Sentence for Health Care Fraud

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Grinnell psychiatrist has been given two months in prison for health care fraud.

Prosecutors say Dr. Richard Hauser was sentenced Tuesday in Des Moines. He’d pleaded guilty in October. He also was ordered to pay nearly $31,000 in restitution.

Prosecutors say Hauser operated a clinic under the name Prevention Systems Inc. and did business as The Hauser Clinic. His plea agreement says that beginning by at least November 2011 and through December 2012, Hauser submitted false claims to Iowa Medicaid and Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Iowa for more expensive services that weren’t performed.

Merle Haggard Tribute Concert Planned For Nashville

Some of country’s biggest stars will assemble in Nashville this spring for a special concert honoring the life and songs of the legendary Merle Haggard. Dubbed “Sing Me Back Home: The Music Of Merle Haggard,” the all-star concert will take place at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on April 6 in honor of what would have been Merle’s 80th birthday and the one-year anniversary of his passing. The night will include performances by artists such as Willie Nelson, Loretta Lynn, Kenny Chesney, Miranda Lambert, Kacey Musgraves, Dierks Bentley, Hank Williams Jr., John Mellencamp, Lynyrd Skynyrd and many more.

Iowa Group Launches Plan to Help Save Monarch Butterflies

AMES, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa group has devised a strategy to keep monarch butterflies off the national endangered species list.

The Des Moines Register reports (http://dmreg.co/2luarvn ) that the 135-page plan issued Monday is aimed at helping farmers, backyard gardeners and others boost monarch butterfly habitat in Iowa. Nearly 40 agriculture, conservation, business, utility and government groups, calling themselves the Iowa Monarch Conservation Consortium, pulled together the strategy.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is considering protecting monarch butterflies under the Endangered Species Act. Supporters of the protection say farming in the Midwest is among the reasons for monarch’s decline.

Steve Bradbury is an Iowa State University entomologist, and he says it’s unclear exactly how many habitat acres Iowa should add to help keep monarch butterflies off the national endangered species list.

Brett Eldredge has released his brand-new single, “Somethin’ I’m Good At,” giving fans their first taste of his forthcoming studio album due out this summer. Written by Eldredge and Tom Douglas, “Somethin’ I’m Good At” is a song that Brett says matches his personality more than anything he’s ever written. Eldredge says, “It’s exciting to write and record a song that captures this side of me and this song is full of life and excitement. I hope everyone feels the way I do about it.”
