Iowa Kids Raise Collapsed Shed Roof, Drag Dad to Safety

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (AP) — A central Iowa man is expressing a special pride in his children, who rescued him from under the roof of a shed that collapsed on him.

Matt Gannaway and his children had started to take down a wobbly old shed Tuesday morning at his mother’s Marshalltown home when the shed roof fell, pinning him to the ground and knocking him unconscious.

His children sprang in to action. His 13-year-old, Ethan, called 911. Then he and 9-year-old Addison and 11-year-old Payton lifted the roof high enough that Payton could drag her dad to safety as firefighters and medics arrived.

Gannaway suffered a broken shoulder blade and some facial cuts. He told the Marshalltown Times-Republican that when he heard his kids had saved him, “I couldn’t have had a prouder moment.”

Kip Moore Pledges Bonus for Songwriters

With music streaming on the rise, many songwriters often struggle to get fair compensation for their songs if they don’t get picked as radio singles. As the songwriters continue to fight for fair pay from streaming services, Kip Moore has stepped up to provide a yearly bonus to his fellow co-writers in hopes that it will give them the financial security to keep writing great music. Kip tells Billboard that while he knows not every artist can follow his lead, he hopes that some of the more successful artists can follow suit to help the struggling songwriters in Nashville.

  • Kip says, “You hope that Congress fixes the songwriting problem and the rates that we’re getting, but until then we artists have to be proactive and help our writers out.”

Country Stars React to Gregg Allman’s Death

Several country stars took to social media over the weekend to react to the death of Southern Rock icon Gregg Allman on Saturday (5/27) at the age of 69. A message on The Allman BrothersBand’swebsite says Gregg passed away peacefully at his home in Savannah, Georgia. While no specific cause of death was immediately given, the message said that Allman had “struggled with many health issues over the past several years.”

Here’s how some of the country stars reacted to Allman’s death:

While playing his last show on the “Holdin’ My Own Tour” in Nashville on Saturday (5/27), Eric Church performed a rendition of The Allman Brother Band’s classic “Midnight Rider.” That performance can be seen here:

Brad Paisley‏: What a legacy @GreggAllman leaves behind. Jam on in the great hereafter.

Jason Aldean: This one hurts a lot. This was one of my heroes. He made it seem possible for a kid to come out of Macon, Georgia, make a name for himself and make it in this business. He was such an inspiration to so many of us that tried so hard to imitate him but could just never quite do it the same. Thanks for the music and thanks for making me believe I could achieve my music dreams too. RIP Gregg Allman. https://www.instagram.com/p/BUnQp6XjhcU/

hard to believe that magnificent voice is stilled forever

Jennifer Nettles‏: [Heartbroken emoji] One of the best.

NATIONAL CHAMPION! Seddon Wins Discus Crown

Gulf Shores, Ala.–Derek Seddon (Sr., Knoxville, Iowa, Physical Education) was the nation’s best discus thrower all year and proved it one final time when it ultimately mattered and his national title guided William Penn at the NAIA Track and Field National Championships Thursday through Saturday.

Seddon became the second Statesmen national champion ever on Friday by topping the field with a throw of 183-0.  He won the event by nearly five feet as Elias Micozzi of Bethel (Ind.) was second at 178-1.75.

The senior joins Pat Pilgrim, who won the long jump in 1994, as the only other national champion in program history.

“I do not think there is a finer example of what hard work and dedication can do for an athlete than Derek,” Head Coach Allen Friesen said.  “What he has done over the past four years, and to end his collegiate career as a national champion, is simply remarkable.  I cannot be more proud or happier for this young man.”

The All-American award is Seddon’s fifth, having placed second in the discus as a junior, fourth in the discus as a sophomore, fifth in the weight throw in March, and seventh in the indoor shot put as a junior.

The national title caps an outdoor campaign in which Seddon won the discus seven times.

Seddon’s week was made even more impressive due to the fact that he also competed in the hammer and shot put.  The senior placed 15th in Thursday’s hammer at 173-0.75 and was 16th in Saturday’s shot put at 50-3.

While Seddon headlined the Championships, Cornelius McCastle (Sr., McKinney, Texas, Industrial Technology) was a major player as well, ending his collegiate career with his second All-America honor (also placed seventh in the high jump in 2015).

The senior, who had been out of action for nearly a year with an Achilles heel injury, culminated his triumphant return by taking sixth in the high jump at 6-7.75 on Thursday.

It marks the third time (all since indoor 2015) that WPU has produced multiple All-Americans in a single meet.  The All-Americans are the 15th and 16th in program history.

Seddon and McCastle led the navy and gold to 13 points, which helped the squad to a tie for 20th.  British Columbia won the team title with 71 points.

The seniors rose to the occasion in their final competitions, but their younger teammates fell a bit short of achieving the same level of success.

Derek Robinson (Jr., Jenks, Okla., Communications) came the closest to adding another All-American to the list as he finished 10th in the discus at 160-6.75.

Tristen Elmore (Fr., Ovied, Fla., Physical Education) entered as a qualifier in the 100 and 200-meter dashes, but was unable to qualify for the finals.  The freshman took 24th in Thursday’s 200 in 21.81 seconds and was 29th in Friday’s 100 in 10.76 seconds.

Fellow freshman sprinter Chris Leiba (Olympia, Wash., Business Management) also made his nationals debut in the 100, ending up 37th overall in 10.98 seconds.

Guadalupe Gonzalez (Jr., Houston, Texas, Exercise Science) endured unquestionably the most grueling performance, running Saturday’s 26.2-mile marathon in hot, humid conditions.  She crossed the line in 22nd place in 3:40:49.5 (3 hours, 40 minutes, 49.5 seconds).

The men’s 4×100-meter relay team unfortunately had the toughest outing by failing to complete a hand-off in Thursday’s prelims and therefore did not finish the race.

“I think this weekend was a great example of the pride and fight our athletes have exhibited all season,” Friesen said.  “Our first day of competition did not go as planned, but we came back Friday and Saturday with pride and determination to get both a National Champion and All-American.”

O’Keefe says the man may have been living in a homeless camp near the river.

Brett Young Reaches A Platinum Milestone

Todd Reitzler chose the right lane and the right moves to take the lead early but he had several challenges from Louis Lynch early on before Derrick Agee took the top spot away on lap five. Agee continued to lead until Mike Hughes, Nathan Wood and Cayden Carter made their way up to battle for the top spot, Agee exited the race track shortly after. VanDerWal pulled away and went on to take his second win of the season at Osky ahead of VanDenBerg, Logan Anderson, Jason McDaniel and Cory Van Zante.

Making their second of three appearance at the monster half mile was the Karl Chevrolet Dirt Trucks. Steve Jackson and Eric Lundstrom led the field to the green but it was points leader Brad Moyer grabbing top spot early. Moyer began huggin the bottom side meanwhile Steve Jackson went to the high side just before the caution came out on lap three. Moyer held off Jackson until lap six when Jackson took the lead away. Jackson went on to make two for two in the Trucks at Osky. Moyer settled for second, Pat Gordon was third, Corey Stout was fourth and Lundstrom slipped back to fifth.

Christian Huffman led the opening lap one in the KBOE Radio / Mahaska Bottling IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature. Ryan Wells took the lead away on lap two and looked comfortable in the top spot but the caution came out twice on lap four for Riley Meinders and then again on lap five for Kirk Puttmann in turn three. Wells saw six-time IMCA Hobby Stock National Champion Shannon Anderson take the lead away on lap seven. Anderson and the field saw the caution come out one more time on lap 12 when Puttmann spun in turn two. Anderson went on to hold off Bill Bonnett for his third win in three nights in Osky. Bonnett finished second ahead of Aaron Martin, Mike Kincaid and Thomas Stevens.

Final feature of the night was the 20 lap Musco Lighting IMCA Modifieds feature. Todd Inman took advantage of his pole position as he led the first three laps before Jason Murray powered his way by on lap four. Murray saw the caution come out on lap six when Inman had something break in the right front sending him into the outside fence. Murray knew it was gonna be tough to hold on to the top spot as Cayden Carter, debuting a new VanderBuilt Chassis, took the top spot away on the restart. Carter was heading on to the win before a caution for Scott Dickey in the turn four fence forcing a green-white-checkered finish. Carter held off Derrick Stewart to take the win.
