Phillips Scores 22 In WPU’s Loss To Baker

Baldwin City, Kan.–Just two days after holding on at home, the William Penn women’s basketball team did not have enough in the tank to run with #21 Baker in a 71-46 Heart of America Athletic Conference loss Monday.

The Statesmen (7-8, 4-4 Heart) never led in a matchup that witnessed them being outshot 43.1{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b}-29.4{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b}.  WPU did hold a 45-40 margin on the glass, but the Wildcats (11-4, 5-3 Heart) still managed to post a 16-14 edge in second-chance points.

The visitors, who trailed 35-13 at the break, could not muster a comeback in the final 20 minutes of action.  The navy and gold also succumbed to 24 turnovers, which led to a 23-7 mark in points off turnovers for Baker.

Alyssa Phillips (Jr., Gurnee, Ill., Communications) had a big evening, accounting for nearly half of her squad’s points, finishing with 22 on 7-for-13 shooting.  She also added eight rebounds and two steals.  She could have tallied many more, however, but had issues at the line with an 8-for-18 performance (WPU was 13-for-31 overall).

Vashti Nwagbaraocha (Fr., Milwaukee, Wis., Exercise Science) joined Phillips in double figures with 13 points in addition to eight rebounds; the freshman assisted twice as well.  Kadejah Young (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn., Physical Education) matched Phillips with a pair of thefts.

“Unfortunately, we did not compete tonight and we are not good enough yet to not compete every time out,” Head Coach Willie Scott said.

Darius Rucker Looking Forward To Making New Album

It hasn’t even been a full year since Darius Rucker released his fourth country album, Southern Style, but Darius says he’s already looking forward to that album’s follow-up. He tells the boot, “We’re working on it. We’re always writing for the next record. I will take a break sometime, but not right now; I don’t feel like it right now.”

Under The Radar Music: Trent Summar/Hank Flamingo

Bobbo’s artist o’ the week this week is the virtually unknown Trent Summar.

Trent Summar has been around the block awhile (since 1987) but few know who he his, which is unfortunate, ‘cause this guy rocks. Trent’s first group to make any sort of splash was the cleverly-named “Hank Flamingo”. Here’s their only song that was ever sort of close to being a hit, “BabyIt’s You”:

Several years down the road, not long after I started at KBOE, a great CD crossed my desk by this new band “Trent Summar & The New Row Mob”. I thought surely, these guys would go somewhere… well, they didn’t. Here’s a couple of kickin’ tracks from that first album:

“New Money” –

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aW2ItTdZ3GQ

“Paint Your Name In Purple” –

and “Starletta” –

Good stuff, eh? Well… I think so anyway. Next week, I’ll be back to impose my oddball musical sensibilities on you once again. Here’s a hint about next week’s band: They’re a somewhat zany bunch with a bass player who bears a resemblance to “Married With Children” character Peggy Bundy. Later, taters! Bobbo 🙂

Legislature To Tackle Education, Water Quality

DES MOINES (AP) — The Iowa Legislature is expected to tackle K-12 education and water quality initiatives in the session that convenes Monday.

The Democratic-controlled Senate and the Republican-led House have long been at odds over how much money funding to school district funding to to spend on K-12 education, and the 2016 session will likely continue that pattern. Legislative leaders differ on how much new state revenue is available, and that will impact how much they’re willing to increase base funding to school districts.

Gov. Terry Branstad will also seek support for his proposal to fund water quality initiatives with the help of an existing 1-cent sales tax for school infrastructure improvements. Lawmakers may question whether to touch the money.

Rand Paul Highlights Eminent Domain in Oskaloosa Visit

Presidential candidate Rand Paul visited Smokey Row Coffee Shop in Oskaloosa Friday morning. After being introduced by Mahaska County Supervisor Mark Doland, Paul spoke to around 100 people, highlighted by discussion on eminent domain.

Paul started out by joking about the wet weather in the area.

“Thanks everybody for coming out today, and thanks for sharing your snow with me. We’ve been driving up through what looks like a complete white-out. Now it’s turning to rain, which it’ll turn to slosh, but I did bring my snow boots, so I’m prepared for it,” stated Paul.

He then went on to talk about eminent domain. Paul stated that one of the worst powers one can give the government is the power to take property. He mentioned Kelo v. City of New London, Connecticut, where the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that the government can take private property from an owner and give the property to another private owner through eminent domain, based on which one of the property owners would pay more in property taxes.

Paul then related this to what has happened in California.

“They have actually gone to a church and said, ‘We’re going to take the church through eminent domain, because the church is not paying any taxes,’” Paul said.

Paul then explained how fellow presidential candidate Donald Trump has used eminent domain when attempting to build casinos.

“We have one candidate, Donald Trump, who’s made his living building casinos, but he doesn’t go to town and ask you to sell your land, he comes to town and he says to the local authories, ‘Condemn their land and give it to me.” You don’t believe me? Ask Vera Coking. She had lived in her house for thirty years. Donald Trump came to town, bought off the mayor. He said, ‘I’m building a casino.’ Vera Coking said ‘I’m not selling,’ and he said ‘Well we’re going to condemn your land,’ and took her to court. This little old lady had lived in her house for thirty years, she fought Donald Trump and she beat him,” stated Paul.

In 1998, the Superior Court of New Jersey ruled in favor of Vera Coking, stating that Trump and the local government could not use eminent domain to acquire the property.

As for eminent domain in our area, especially in regards to the new proposed airport in rural Mahaska and Marion Counties, Paul was clear in his intentions should he become President.

“I will not let the government take any of your property through eminent domain and give it to somebody else,” Paul said, to applause.

Paul also spoke on limiting government spending, taxes, debt, and war.

Oskaloosa was one of five stops on the campaign trail for the Kentucky Senator on Friday.

The campaign leads up to the February 1st Iowa Caucuses.
