Ottumwa Library Announces Summer Reading Program

May 18, 2017 – Ottumwa, Iowa – The Ottumwa Public Library is excited to announce that we will again be having our Summer Reading Program. As in previous years, we will have a program for all ages with the theme “Build a Better World.”  All of our programs run May 30-August 11, 2017.

 

CHILDREN’S PROGRAM: Children ages 0-14 can sign up at the library. After registering, they will receive a reading log to complete. They then turn in their reading logs at the end of June, July, and shortened August months. With each completed log returned, kids will receive a goodie bag of prizes and be entered in the grand prize drawing for their age group.  Grand prizes for the three children’s age groups include: a large Lego Duplo set or a Build & Grow Prize pack for the Infant/Toddler/Preschool ages; a Lego Minecraft Fortress Building kit or a Build a Better World Prize pack for the K-5th grades; and an Amazon gift card or Build a Better World Prize pack for the 6th-8th grades.

 

The Summer Reading Program will also have 12 programs scheduled this summer to entertain children of all ages. This year they are scheduled at different times in an attempt to accommodate parents’ varying work schedules. We have daytime, evening and weekend performances scheduled.

 

The Library would like to thank the Knights of Columbus for hosting our programs which include: Dizzy’s Summer Reading Kick Off on June 8th at 10:30 am.  Information about the other programs is available at the library and on our website.  The rest of the program lineup includes: IPTV’s Dan Wardell, Fax Gilbert’s Mime, Mask & Magic, Jim & Leslie’s Laughing Matters Juggling Show, Geoff Akins’ Bubble Wonders Bubble ShowPint Size Polkas, Miss Carole’s Macaroni Soup Active Music for Kids, Jonathan May’s Comedy Magic, Absolute ScienceThe Lisa Laird Ventriloquist Show, Blank Park Zoo visit, and our End of the Summer Reading Program Carnival!  There are also Lego Clubs, Family Movie showings, and Board Game days scheduled so check our schedule often!

 

TEEN PROGRAM: There is also a Summer Reading Program for teens. If you are a teen (9th-12th grade) and love to read, OPL wants you to sign up today for this year’s program. All you have to do is sign up at the Children’s Desk on the first floor of the library and pick up a reading log. There will be reading logs for June, July and the beginning of August. When you return the log you receive a prize bag and your name will be entered into the drawing for a $100 Amazon gift card.

 

We will also be having events for Teens throughout the summer including: Choose Your Own Book Club, Teen Graphic Novel Book Club, a Teen Writers Club and on Saturday, August 12 from 3-5pm, there will be a Teen Trivia Party to celebrate the end of the Summer Reading Program at the library.

 

ADULT PROGRAM: Summer reading programs are not just for kids! If you’re an avid adult reader (age 18+), OPL wants you to be a part of our Adult Summer Reading program. Sign up at the Reference Desk and, just for signing up, you’ll receive a watering can flower pot. Read three books before August 11th and submit your form and you’ll earn a tape measure and will be entered into a

drawing for other great prizes, including gift certificates to O’Hara Hardware, Edd the Florist, Inc., and Earl May Garden Center.

Toby Keith Will Perform in Saudi Arabia During President Trump’s Visit

Toby Keith will be in Saudi Arabia this weekend to perform at an event in the country’s capital of Riyadh. According to The Washington Post, Keith’s performance on Saturday (5/20) will take place at the same time President Trump visits Saudi Arabia during his first foreign trip as commander-in-chief, although it’s unclear if the concert was designed to coincide with the president’s visit. Keith’s performance is being promoted by the Saudi entertainment website Lammt as a free concert that only men can attend.

 

  • While Toby’s  show in Saudi Arabia wasn’t official billed as part of President Trump’s visit, the singer did perform at the president’s pre-inauguration concert in January.

May 19th: On This Day

On this day in 2014, Luke Bryan’s singles “Drink a Beer” and “Play It Again” were both Certified Gold and Platinum by the RIAA.

“Drink a Beer” was his seventh number one on the Billboard Country Airplay chart. Bryan has described the song as “the coolest sad song ever” and notes he connects with the story after having lost both of his siblings.

“Play It Again” was Bryan’s eighth chart-topper on the Hot Country Songs chart and has since been Certified Triple Platinum.

Blake Shelton’s Relationship With Adam Levine is “Explosive”

Whether you label it a bromance or a something else, Blake Shelton and Adam Levine have certainly had an interesting relationship over their years together on The Voice. Shelton tells The Tennessean that his relationship with Levine is pretty hard to define, as two are really good friends but also constantly at each other’s throats.  Blake says, “We’re those two guys you knew in high school where we have this bond that is unexplainable. It brings out the best and worst in both of us. It truly is an explosive relationship.”

 

The competition between Shelton and Levine is still going strong, as Team Blake’s Lauren Duski and Aliyah Moulden will go head to head with Team Adam’s Jesse Larson on the Season 12 finale of The Voice next week. Alicia Keys’ Chris Blue rounds out the show’s final four contestants.

Nashville Predators Anthem – Kelly Clarkson

Kelly Clarkson is the latest music superstar to sing the National Anthem at the Nashville Predators playoff game last night (5/18) in downtown Nashville. Kelly follows an impressive list of country superstars that preceded her in singing the anthem for the Predators that includes Carrie Underwood, Little Big Town, Lady Antebellum, Keith Urban, Luke Bryan and Vince Gill. Service Confirms 2 Tornadoes Caused Damage in Eastern Iowa

WASHINGTON, Iowa (AP) — The National Weather Service has confirmed that two tornadoes caused some eastern Iowa storm damage.

The service says the first tornado touched down around 4:15 p.m. Wednesday in northeastern Jefferson County and lifted about four minutes later near Lake Darling in Washington County. It was rated EF-1 with winds reaching 110 mph that damaged farm outbuildings and trees.

The second struck around 6:35 p.m. in northeast Washington County and lifted six minutes later. It also was rated an EF-1 twister, damaging outbuildings, power lines and trees.

No injuries have been reported.

May 18th: On This Day

On this day in 2005, Gretchen Wilson was awarded her first Gold Single for “Here for the Party” and a Platinum Single for “Redneck Woman”.

“Redneck Woman” was the lead-off single to the multi-platinum debut album. The song was also Wilson’s only number one single on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks charts.

“Here for the Party” was the second single released off of the album and peaked at #3 on the Billboard US Hot Country Songs.

George Strait is Named Texas State Musician

As George Strait celebrates his 65th birthday today (5/18), the Texas State Legislature will officially appoint him as Texas State Musician for 2017. Selections for the prestigious honor are made every two years, with the general public nominating the candidates and the Texas Commission on the Arts selecting the recipients. Artists who’ve been bestowed this honor in the past include Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett and ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons.

 

  • Strait says, “It’s a great honor for me to be selected as Texas State Musician of 2017 and join this very prestigious list of other honorees. I’m a very proud Texan and love to sing the praises of our great state every chance I get. Thank you very, very much.”

Morgan Evans Signs with Warner Music Nashville

Australian singer-songwriter Morgan Evans has signed a record deal with Warner Music Nashville, meaning he’ll likely get to spend more time in Nashville with his famous fiancée, Kelsea Ballerini. To celebrate his new record deal, Evans recorded a mashup of his favorite songs by Warner Music Nashville artists, including Blake Shelton, Brett Eldredge, Cole Swindell and Dan + Shay. Morgan, who has a duet with Ballerini on her forthcoming album, is currently in the studio working on new music with songwriter/producer Chris DeStefano.

 

  • Evans will celebrate his first U.S. record deal by playing a show at the Grand Ole Opry on Friday (5/19) followed by a performance on Saturday (5/20) at Nashville’s iconic Bluebird Café.
  • Kelsea tweeted after her fiancé’s deal was announced, “Couldn’t be more happy or proud of this human. So patient, so humble, SO talented. Excited to ride the roller coaster with you babe.”
  • Before his new U.S. deal, Morgan had been signed to Warner Music Australia since 2012.

 

Pet of the Week: Jed

I’m “Jed” and I’m a 2-year old Rottweiler mix. I would love to find a new home and family as soon as possible. I like to have a human around to give me treats and food and water. I need a gentle person to take me on walks and brush my handsome coat. I am very intelligent and eager to please. I would like to learn some commands so I can be a very good dog and companion for you. In return, I will give you lots of love and affection, and be your protector. Come on out and meet me–I can’t wait to meet you!
