Florida Georgia Line’s “God, Your Mama, And Me” Goes #1

Florida Georgia Line has taken the top spot on the country charts this week and they’ve brought the Backstreet Boys (BSB) with them. The two groups reach the chart’s summit with their collaborative single, “God, Your Mama, And Me,” giving FGL their 13th No. 1 song and BSB their first country chart-topper. The song also marks the duo’s third consecutive No. 1 from their Dig Your Roots album, following “H.O.L.Y.” and “May We All” (featuring Tim McGraw).

  • Tyler Hubbard said, “Finding out that ‘God, Your Mama, And Me’ went No. 1 is surreal – really cool to be a part of Backstreet Boys’ first Country #1!” Brian Kelley added, “If you told me growing up that I would share a #1 song with BSB, I would have told you to get outta here! Dream big, work hard, surround yourself with an amazing team and anything is possible.”
  • Backstreet Boys’ Nick Carter also reacted to the news saying, “We’re fans of each other and that’s one of the reasons why the song works so well. I’m glad it’s with these boys that we just reached #1 at Country radio for the first time.”

Polk County Officer Not Fired for Islam Comment, Sheriff’s Office Says

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Polk County Sheriff’s Office says insubordination and gender bias led to the firing of a sergeant who was being investigated for social media postings deriding Islam.

Sgt. Dan Charleston was fired Friday. The investigation was launched after a graphic on Charleston’s Facebook page included what it said were “verses from the Quran that inspire terrorists.” The post included a comment from Charleston that read: “No reasoning with this evil ideology.” The posting has since been removed.

The Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Monday that “the recent social media postings made by Charleston about the Quran and Muslims were not a factor in any way with his separation from the sheriff’s office.”

Charleston has said he will appeal his firing but declined to comment further.

Pierson Promoted to Head Women’s Golf Coach

Oskaloosa–William Penn University Athletics Director Nik Rule is proud to announce that Chris Pierson has been hired as Head Women’s Golf Coach.

Pierson replaces Rule who was recently hired as William Penn’s Athletics Director.  He advances within the program, after serving as Associate Head Coach the past two seasons.

“Chris and his staff have spent several years within the women’s golf program already,” Rule said.  “They know what it takes to succeed at this level, they know our current players, and they are prepared to continue to lead the team to success on and off the course.”

During his Associate tenure, he helped guide the Statesmen to a pair of Heart of America Athletic Conference titles and two NAIA National Championship appearances, finishing 19th and 18th.  He coached 16 all-Heart players, two Heart Players of the Year, and one NAIA Second-Team All-American.

“I want to thank Coach Rule for giving me this great opportunity to take over a tremendous program!” Pierson said.  “This program has had a lot of success in the past and we plan to continue that success moving forward.  I also want to thank William Penn University for all their great support of athletics.”

Pierson has had coaching experience off the course as well, having been the Head Junior Varsity Coach and Assistant Varsity Coach for the William Penn men’s basketball program from 2012 to 2017.  He served in the same capacity at Central College from 2007-2009 and again from 2011-2012.

“Chris is very knowledgeable and has experience in managing collegiate teams,” Rule said.  “We have every confidence in his abilities and know he is the right fit to lead the program into the future.”

A 2007 graduate of William Penn with a degree in Physical Education, Pierson was a three-year member of the golf team.  He was named team captain of the 2006-2007 squad and earned academic all-conference and NAIA Scholar-Athlete recognition as a senior as well.

Pierson will be stepping down from his post within the men’s basketball program.  Dylan Detweiler also earns a promotion with Pierson’s hiring.  Detweiler will now be the Associate Head Coach for the women’s golf program.

The Song That Had to Stay – Faith Hill

With hundreds of songs released between the two of them, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill had to go through the painstaking process of whittling down their catalogs for the “Soul2Soul Tour” set list. Tim tells Entertainment Weekly, “You’re never going to get to do every song that every person wants.” But when Tim almost cut his song “Live Like You Were Dying” from the set list, Faith wasn’t having any of it. She says, “I would’ve packed my bags and left if he’d done that!” Needless to say, Hill got her way and the song made the set list.
