Lady Antebellum’s Charles Kelley And His Wife Are Expecting

There’s a New Baby A on the way! Lady Antebellum’s Charles Kelley and his wife, Cassie, revealed that they are expecting their first child. Cassie shared the news on her Womanista Blog on Friday (8/7), saying, “Charles and I are so beyond excited to share with y’all that we are expecting a baby! He or She is due in February and we are so happy we can hardly stand it.”

William Penn 19th in NAIA’s Preseason Poll

The Statesmen football squad is only third in its own division, but the Heart of America Athletic Conference is really good, therefore the navy and gold still find themselves on the national radar as the NAIA’s preseason top-25 poll was released Monday.

William Penn, which was 7-4 last fall (3-2 MSFA MWL), fell one spot from the spring’s national rating to #19 with 95 points. The Statesmen are one of six programs from within the Heart to be in the top 25, highlighted by Grand View at #6, MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) at #8, and Missouri Valley at #9.

Defending national champion Southern Oregon is sharing the top spot with national runner-up Marian (Ind.). SOU has eight first place votes, while Marian has five; the teams both have 304 points. The rest of the top five includes Morningside, Saint Xavier, and Carroll (Mont.), which has the last first-place vote. Saint Xavier and Carroll are tied for fourth.

The 2015 campaign has a harsh start with WPU traveling to #9 Missouri Valley on August 29. The following week, the Statesmen come home to face #8 MidAmerica Nazarene. #15 Baker (Kan.) concludes the school’s welcome to the Heart with a road matchup on September 12.

Oskaloosa School Board Meets for Final Time Before School Year

The Oskaloosa School Board met in regular session Monday night, putting the finishing touches prior to the upcoming school year.

The meeting began with Superintendent Russ Reiter reporting that the school’s maintenance staff will look at improvements on the fields to the south and east, where the marching band is currently rehearsing.

As the board moved into the regular agenda, Nick Denhartog, an incoming senior at Oskaloosa High School, presented his plans to get his Eagle Scout Award, which is to build a trail from the trees along the fields next to the baseball and softball fields to a giant White Oak tree. His plan is called the “Good Oak Trail” and is a trail that is two tenths of a mile long.

Great Prairie Area Education Agency delivered a presentation outlining their role in the southeast Iowa region and what they offer to students and districts. Eighty percent of the agency’s business deals with special education.

The Board later passed a plan to purchase 150 tablets for the Oskaloosa Elementary School. Five tablets would go into each classroom from kinderprep to second grade for use in the classroom. Oskaloosa has been noted for their progressiveness in access to the latest technology to help out with their students’ learning and needs.

The Board also approved a list of measurable goals that outline short term and long term academic scenarios, and they will revisit them as the school year goes along into the winter.

In other business:

– The Board approved the Special Education Delivery Plan and the Backpack

Weekend Food Initiative

– The Board passed the adjustment to Policy 606.3, which will allow the use of an emotional support dog in the school, and if the program is successful, could see an expansion in the future

– The Board approved Chad Vink once again as the Board Secretary and Treasurer

– The Board renewed their membership to the Iowa Association of School Boards for the price of $7,401 for the upcoming year, acknowledging that there are many good things that come from this membership in the way of workshops and materials that are sent to the school district

The next meeting of the Oskaloosa School Board is scheduled for September 14th at 7 pm at the meeting room in the George Daily Auditorium.

Mahaska County Board of Supervisors Meet with Director of Iowa DHS

The Mahaska County Board of Supervisors met for a special session to once again discuss the situation regarding the Mid-Iowa Behavioral Health Region Monday morning.

This meeting was called because of a special guest. Charles Palmer, who is the Director of the Iowa Department of Human Services, wanted to meet face-to-face with the Mahaska County Board of Supervisors, as well as their Marion County counterparts, to help clear the air on the process and discuss the options that the counties have.

A couple of months ago, Mahaska and Marion Counties were informed that they could no longer operate as a two-county region in the mental health field. Mahaska County has recently decided to go through with an appeal of that decision.

Palmer stated in Monday’s meeting that he does not want it to be an adversarial situation, and both parties could work together to make sure the people who are affected by these adjustments are taken care of in the best way possible.

Chair Mark Doland asked if Palmer was going to dictate which region that the county were to join should the appeal fail. Palmer said he had no interest in “match making,” but instead thought the counties should make that determination based on what they believe is the best fit.

Supervisor Mike VanderMolen asked if the two-county region was ever going to be considered as a full region past the two-year period after Poweshiek and Jasper left for the region to the north. Palmer said that there were no issues with that, but felt it was best for the counties to make a move to a larger region.

VanderMolen also asked if there were any issues should the appeal go past the November 1st deadline. That deadline was set as the date Mahaska County needed to be with another region. Palmer said that he would work with the county in that regard.

The appeal is scheduled to be heard later this month.

The next scheduled meeting of the Mahaska County Board of Supervisors is next Monday, August 17th, at the Mahaska County Courthouse in Oskaloosa. The meeting will be called to order at 9 AM.

A 33-Year-Old Man Accused Of Leaving Infant Daughter Inside A Hot Car

Court records say Trent Steinhart, of Sigourney, is charged with neglect or abandonment of a dependent person. The records don’t list the name of an attorney who could be contacted to comment on Steinhart’s behalf.

He was arrested Saturday in Pella, where police say a passer-by spotted the baby alone in the locked car. Police say the heat index at the time was 92 degrees and that she’d been in the car for at least 15 minutes. Officers used a special tool to unlock a car door and rescue her.

Police say Steinhart told officers he’d been inside a store shopping and forgot his daughter was in the car.

Sunday is the Cheez-It 355 at The Glen, Round-22 ofthe 2015 Sprint Cup Series and the last of two road races on this year’s schedule. Kyle Busch won the first one in late June at Sonoma, California. He’s the last Sprint Cup driver to sweep both road-course events in a single season, doing so in 2008. Busch’s total of four wins this year matches Jimmie Johnson for the Sprint Cup Series lead. But while Johnson is one of nine drivers who’ve clinched a spot in the Chase, Busch is not eligible for a post-season berth since he is outside the top thirty in the point standings after missing eleven races while recovering from early-season injuries. Entering Sunday’s race, Busch is thirty-second – thirteen points below the cutoff.

Defending race winner A-J Allmendinger is looking for a repeat victory to grab a spot on The Chase Grid. But back-to-back wins at Watkins Glen have been rare. The track hosted three Cup Series races from 1957 through 1965 and the tour has run there continually since 1986. The only drivers with victories in consecutive seasons are Mark Martin, Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart and Marcos Ambrose.

With his win in the preliminary main on the opening night of the Arnold Motor Supply 360-cubic-inch Knoxville Nationals presented by Great Southern Bank on Thursday at Knoxville Raceway, Danny Lasoski of Missouri is the early leader in the 2015 Cox Design & Metal Fabrication Iowa Speed Week point standings. Night number two is Friday, August 7, with the second preliminary main of the Arnold Motor Supply 360 Knoxville Nationals presented by Great Southern Bank. The ‘360’ Nationals are sanctioned by the American Sprint Car Series (ASCS).

WPU Expected to Face Tough Road in HAAC

The Statesmen volleyball team will begin the 2015 campaign with the unenviable task of moving out of the league cellar as the Heart of America Athletic Conference preseason coaches’ poll was released Thursday.

William Penn, which ended last fall at 2-30 overall (0-6 MCC), has been selected 12th in its new league, while defending Heart champion Evangel is picked at the top.

Fellow MCC newbie Grand View is second in the poll with MidAmerica Nazarene (2014 HAAC co-champion) in third.

Graceland, Culver-Stockton, Baker, Peru State, Benedictine (Kan.), Missouri Valley, Central Methodist, and Avila fall in from #4-#11.

WPU’s season opens on August 22 with a triangular in Cedar Rapids against host Mount Mercy and Purdue-North Central (Ind.). A matchup versus Central Methodist in Fayette, Mo. on September 8 will serve as the team’s first league contest.
