Payne Overpowers USMTS Hunters At 81 Speedway

While many of the drivers in Thursday’s opening event in the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s Cup powered by S&S Fishing & Rental came looking to score valuable points in a quest to be the 2015 USMTS National Champion, Jeremy Payne showed up just looking for a win and some good money.

He got both.

After setting the tone early by scoring the most passing points among the 43 heat race competitors, Payne redrew fourth to start the 40-lap feature race and quickly moved into second to challenge early leader Brian Franz.

After stalking the multi-time NCRA champion for 27 laps, Payne finally made the pass for the lead and then fended off another final last-lap effort to get to the checkered flag first and record the 20th win of his career, but first of the 2015 campaign.

“I knew I had a really good car and early I could run with him (Franz) but he kind of got away there,” Payne said. “His car was really good so I was kind of searching around and found a better line in (turns) one and two. I think he pushed one time when I had a good run, I got by him and that’s all she wrote.”

Payne got paid $3,000 for his efforts while Franz wasn’t as fortunate. Post-race technical inspections found the engine setback to be outside of the rulebook and Franz was disqualified, which moved 17th-starting Stormy Scott into the runner-up position.

Fourth-place finisher Ryan McAninch was also disqualified for a similar infraction, dropping him from fourth and jumping Jason Hughes, Rodney Sanders and Brent Larson into third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

Sanders’s journey to a top-five finish was a strange and hard-fought one-and one that obviously was not part of the team’s game plan to capture a third straight USMTS National Championship.

On the first lap of Fast Shafts Heat Race #2, Sanders and fellow front-row starter Jon Thompson bumped going into the first corner. By the time they reached turn 3, it was visibly clear that something was broken on Sanders’s right front suspension, and before he could react the tire came off, slid underneath his racecar and catapulted his machine into the air.

He was unhurt in the rollover incident, and the team quickly prepared their back-up car for a last-place start in the second Real Racing Wheels “B” Main where he passed 15 cars en route to a fourth-place finish. He then advanced 16 spots in the “A” Main, and left the 81 Speedway as the points leader in the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s Cup powered by S&S Fishing & Rental.

Jesse Sobbing came into the event atop the points standings, but had a night that was about as long as that of Sanders, albeit he kept his MB Customs on all four wheels all night.

After being unable to advance in his heat race, the Rookie of the Year points leader fumbled a transfer spot with two laps to go in his “B” Main, forcing him to take a provisional in the main event. Sobbing climbed as high as tenth in the feature, but suffered engine trouble on the final lap and plummeted to 15th.

Jake Gallardo finished sixth in the “A” Main, with 19th-starting Grant Junghans seventh, Dereck Ramirez eighth, 28th-starting Dan Powers ninth and Tad Davis tenth.

With one down and 14 races to go in The Hunt, Sanders leads Sobbing by five points (177 to 172) with Ramirez in third with 159 markers. The rest of the top 10 spots are Junghans (154), Cade Dillard (134), Zack VanderBeek (130), Casey Arneson (126), Scott (124) and Hughes (119) while Larson, Houston and Duvall are in a three-way tie for tenth with 112 points.

Friday finds the mud-slinging USMTS machines at the Humboldt Speedway in Humboldt, Kan. Gates open at 6 p.m. and racing starts at 8. USRA B-Mods, Stock Cars and Pure Stocks will round out the five-division card.

Three New Sharon Youths Killed In A Two-Vehicle Crash

Three New Sharon youths were killed in a two-vehicle crash yesterday afternoon at the intersection of Queens Avenue and 130th street East of New Sharon. 10 year old Christian Singletary, 13 year old Carson Singletary, and the driver of the car, 16 year old Jamie Singletary died when the car they were riding in was struck by a rock truck driven by 41 year old Shawn Schippers (Skippers) of New Sharon. Both vehicles came to rest in the West ditch. The accident remains under investigation.

Carter Doubles Up, Paul, Evans and Mather First Time Winners at Osky

After taking the last couple of weeks off for a scheduled week off and mother nature, the Southern Iowa Speedway roared back to life on Supreme Lawn & Landscape, Van Wall Equipment, Farmers Support America, KBOE Radio, Mahaska Bottling Company, Dynamic Drivelines and Autism Society of Iowa Night. 79 cars checked in to tame the monster. Three sprint cars were on hand to get shook down for the upcoming Knoxville Nationals and Front Row Challenge.

Cayden Carter doubled up, by taking wins in the IMCA Late Models and IMCA Stock Cars. Austin Paul (IMCA SportMods), Shane Evans (IMCA Sport Compacts) and Colt Mather (IMCA Modifieds) take their first wins at Osky in 2015. Craig Brown makes a return visit in the IMCA Hobby Stocks. Damian Hamann took the Iowa Sportsman Series.

First feature of the night was the 20 lap Iowa Sportsman Series feature and it was Clayton Webster grabbing the lead early from his second row starting spot. Webster saw Damian Hamann work his way by on lap six and by lap seven, Cole Jackson entered the battle. Hamann and Jackson began to battle for the lead but Hamann was able to hold off every challenge from Jackson to take the win. Jackson finished second, Gene Tish was third, Darin Dezwarte was fourth and Webster came home in fifth.

Zack Vanderbeek started outside row two but by the end of lap one in the 18 lap Budwiser IMCA Stock Car feature, Vanderbeek was in the lead. Vanderbeek saw Todd Reitzler, Mike Hughes, Cayden Carter and Jason See battling for position behind him. Vanderbeek led until the only race caution came out on lap 12 for See in turn three. On the restart, Vanderbeek saw Hughes and Carter sneak on by. Hughes and Carter battled it out for the lead with Hughes holding on to the lead until the final turn. Carter made the move and took the win away from Hughes. Vanderbeek, Reitzler and Donnie Pearson rounded out the top five.

Bill Whalen grabbed the lead early in the IMCA Sport Compacts ten lap feature and appeared to be heading on to the win. However, just after the completion of lap seven, heavy smoke came out of Whalen’s car when his engine expired forcing the yellow flag to come out. That gave the lead over to Shane Evans and he held of Trent Orwig and Ryan Havel to take the win. John Girdley and Tim Bevins finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Danny Brau and Charlie Webber started on the front row of the 16 lap KBOE Radio IMCA Northern SportMods feature but it was neither of them grabbing the lead it was Austin Paul. Paul looked comfortable out front as he cruised on to take his first at Osky. Cory Van Zante finished second, Jason McDaniel finished third, Brett Lowry was fourth and Curtis VanDerWal was fifth.

Colt Mather wrestled the lead away in the Musco Lighting IMCA Modifieds 18 lap feature before Tyler Groenendyk and Scott Dickey. Mather won by a full straight-away over Dickey. Cayden Carter took third ahead of Tyler Groenendyk and Carter VanDenBerg.

Just as the field was coming to the green the caution flag came out in the Pespi Cola IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature when Jared Stephens, Brandon Potts, Steve Allen and Bobby Greene all got together. All of them were able to continue. When the race restarted it was Craig Brown grabbing the lead on lap one. Brown saw the caution come out on lap six for debris in turn three. Brown went on to take his second win at Osky in 2015. Travis Bunnell finished runner up. Dustin Griffiths, Dale Porter and Aaron Martin finished third through fifth.

Final feature of the night was the IMCA Late Models 20 lap feature but before a single lap was scored the caution came out when John Vandenberg spun exiting turn four collecting Todd Cooney, both cars exited to the pits. Curtis Glover took the top spot early but on lap four, Glover saw heavy smoke coming out from his car and exited on lap five. Cayden Carter inherited the lead and never looked back as he took the checkers in commanding fashion. Paul Nagle, Derek Liles, Todd Johnson and Jenna Johnson rounded out the top five.

Southern Iowa Speedway will again take two weeks off from weekly action and will return Wednesday August 26th for Kiss 101.5 Night. Hot Laps at 6:30pm Racing at 7:15pm.

Racing action however will take place at the Southern Iowa Speedway as the National Sprint League makes an appearance during the 20th Annual Front Row Challenge on Monday for $20,000 to win. Rain Date is Tuesday Night.

Thompson Square’s Keifer and Shawna Thompson Are Expecting

Thompson Square’s Keifer and Shawna Thompson are about to turn T2 into T3. The husband-and-wife duo shared the news of a new baby on the way by posting a picture on Twitter that shows Kiefer holding a Diet Coke Can that says “Dad” and Shawna holding on that says “Mom.” The duo captioned the photo by saying, “Well… We have decided not to be a duo anymore!!!!!!!”

X-Finity Series Points Leader To See Double Duty At The Glen

NASCAR X-FINITY Series points leader Chris Buescher of Roush Fenway Racing will see double duty this weekend at Watkins Glen International, also driving in Sunday’s Sprint Cup Series race – where he’ll replace Brett Moffitt in the Number-34 Front Row Motorsports Ford. The extra seat time will help Buescher polish his road-racing skills.

Counting Saturday’s Zippo 200 at The Glen, three of the next four X-FINITY Series events are on road courses. Buescher drove the No. 34 Sprint Cup entry in five races earlier this season with a best finish of twentieth in March at Auto Club Speedway.

Buescher has been atop the X-FINITY Series standings since his victory at Iowa Speedway in mid-May. His lead reached thirty-six points at mid-season but has since shrunk to twenty. Buescher’s last three starts have yielded finishes of thirteenth, sixteenth and fourteenth.

Meanwhile, defending series champion Chase Elliott has climbed back into the title hunt with three straight top-ten finishes.

Four Arrested in Narcotics Search Warrant Execution

On August 5th, 2015 at approximately 10:40 p.m. members of the Mid-Iowa Narcotics Enforcement Task Force with the assistance of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and Knoxville Police Department executed a drug search warrant at 602 W. Marion St. in Knoxville where illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia were seized.

As a result of the search warrant 4 individuals were taken to the Marion County Jail on drug charges awaiting initial appearances. Daniel Lee Sparks of that address charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver more than 5 grams, failure to affix drug tax stamp, possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Melinda Sparks of that address charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver more than 5 grams, failure to affix drug tax stamp, possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Matt Binns of Knoxville charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. Sean martin of Knoxville charged with possession of marijuana.

Possession with intent to deliver more than 5 grams of methamphetamine is a class B felony, possession of marijuana is a serious misdemeanor, failing to affix a drug tax stamp is a class D felony, possession of drug paraphernalia is a simple misdemeanor, and possession of a firearm as a felon is a class D felony.

As a reminder, a criminal charge is merely an accusation and all defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

The Mid-Iowa Narcotics Enforcement Task Force is based in Des Moines and currently has 16 central Iowa agencies participating in the task force including the Jasper, Mahaska, and Marion County Sheriff’s Offices, Knoxville, Newton, and Pella Police Departments.

All-Conference Softball Teams Announced for South Central Conference

The accolades continue to roll in, and the South Central Conference has named its 2015 All-Conference Teams in softball.

The first team is led by a trio from Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont. The Rockets had seniors Paige Shafer and Sadie Baugher, along with freshman Randi Richmond on the first team. Knoxville had the pair of senior Taylor Carter and junior Ricki Hall honored.

Albia senior Emma Dinneen and Centerville sophomore Lexi Riggall were also honored.

The last three spots went to Chariton junior Jessica Wiederholt and the Clarke pair of sophomore Vanessa Bakley and senior Kassidy Spurgin.

The second team includes EBF’s sophomore Haegen Boyer and junior McKinley Moore.

Knoxville junior Carrie Chambers, Albia freshman Hannah Isley, and Davis County junior Connor Wilfawn were all named to the second squad. The team was rounded out by a trio of Chariton players and a pair from Clarke. The Chargers had seniors Delaney Richards and Ellie Bengtson, along with junior Micaela Folkerts. Clarke had sophomores Alex Boyce and Sydnee Redman named to the team.

The honorable mention list is lengthy as well, with all seven schools have at least one honoree.

EBF was represented by senior Rachel Maloy, sophomore Claire Jager, and eighth grader Reina Taylor. Knoxville also had a trio on the list, which included junior Emily Wallace, sophomore Avery Weer, and eighth grader Anna Sanderson. Albia’s senior trio of Lexi VanPolen, Mackenzie Griffin, and Taegan Bossard was named to the team.

Centerville junior Alyssa Barger was honored, along with Davis County’s pair of senior Cami Guiter and junior Whitney Madden. Clarke and Chariton both added a pair of players as well. Clarke was represented by senior Sara Andrew and freshman Chynna Beydler. Chariton had the junior pair of Sarah Fuhs and Carley Arnold.

EBF easily had the best year of the group, finishing 16-2 in conference play, and finishing the season 30-8, which is a school record in wins. Clarke was second with a 12-6 conference mark, and a 20-17 record overall on the heels of their Class 3A championship in 2014. Chariton was third, followed by Knoxville, Albia, Centerville, and Davis County to round out the 2015 SCC softball standings.

Iowa Cropland Value Dropped The Sharpest In The U.S.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says Iowa cropland value dropped the sharpest in the United States in the past year, falling 6.3 percent as low grain prices weakened the value in the nation’s leading corn producing state.
Cropland value fell to $8,200 an acre after climbing to $8,750 last year. Iowa cropland values shot up more than 56 percent from 2011 to 2014.
Cropland values declined in 10 states while the others remained static or grew.
Texas saw the biggest jump at 9.5 percent to $1,840 an acre.
Nationally, cropland grew an average of 0.7 percent.
New Jersey has the most valuable cropland at $13,500 an acre after a 3.8 percent increase. California is second at $10,690 and Arizona third at $8,320 an acre. Iowa is fourth.

New Details Regarding Fire Station, Public Hearing

The Oskaloosa City Council met this past Monday, and some of the topics have a resonating effect with community taxpayers.

The council authorized the sale of bonds that will be used to pay for the construction of the new fire station project, along with a new pumper truck. According to City Manager Michael Schrock, Jr., the sale of the bonds also allows the city to refinance existing debt to a lower interest rate and results in approximately $27,000 of savings to taxpayers.

As a part of the process, the city’s financial advisor spoke at the meeting about the city’s credit rating. This was done with Moody’s, and Oskaloosa scored an Aa3 in the long-term bond rating. This is attributed to good and active financial management by the city, and also is affected by the city’s ample reserves. According to Schrock, this high rating results in lowering borrowing costs for the city because Oskaloosa is seen as a good investment in the eyes of creditors. There were seven bids received for the bonds, and the sale came with an interest rate of 2.33{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b}. This is much lower than the city staff had expected, which again is very good news for the taxpayers in the city of Oskaloosa.

Also at this Monday’s meeting, there was the announcement of a public hearing set for September 8th. There are three projects that will be discussed at this meeting.

Among those is the sewer and storm water improvements for South L and M Streets as well as Penn Boulevard. The city is looking to simply replace old pipes with new ones.

The second item is the B Avenue East pavement rehabilitation project. The city will be doing a complete overhaul on B Avenue East, replacing the road with concrete and adding ADA compliant sidewalks and ramps. Also planned are curb and gutter repairs and storm and sanitary sewer improvements.

Finally, the city council will need to take action to approve a bid for constructing the fire station for the project that has already been approved by the council.
