High School Seniors Leave Behind Colorful Marks On Campus

Seniors at a southern Iowa high school have left behind a colorful mark on campus grounds by spray painting onto concrete their names and other sentimental details, such as athletic jersey numbers.

The Oskaloosa Herald reports that the Oskaloosa High School’s Class of 2016 channeled their inner artists on Tuesday, covering the Indian Trail that leads up to the school’s parking lot with spray paint.

Student Council Advisor Kim Gile says students in years past had painted their names on a street, but the tradition had to be moved to the Indian Trail due to safety concerns.

Senior Anna Kain said she and her best friends had planned their color scheme beforehand and went as a group to go pick up supplies at a store.

Memorial Service Set For Buddy Baker

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. (ET) on Tuesday, August 18th, for former NASCAR driver Buddy Baker, who passed away early Monday after his battle with cancer. The service will take place at Avondale Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, North Carolina. Burial will follow at Sharon Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations in Baker’s name may be made to the Humane Society of Iredell County, 110 Robinson Road, Mooresville, North Carolina, 28117.

Community Invited to Meeting Regarding Market St. and HWY 92 Corridors

The future of the Highway 92 Corridor and the City of Oskaloosa needs the input from the community.

On Tuesday, August 18th, the community is invited to discuss the Highway 92 and Market Street Corridors and the Community Wayfinding Study at the ISU Extension office. The meeting will be from 4:30 to 7 PM and is free admission with light refreshments served.

This is your opportunity to learn more about this important effort and how you can affect change.
Learn about the scope and schedule of the project, help the city determine what aspects of the corridor need to be improved, review the destinations in town that need better signage or need to be better know, and help the committee better understand what you, the community, want visitors and residents to say about Oskaloosa in the future.

The meeting is next Tuesday, August 18th, from 4:30 to 7 PM at the Iowa State University Extension office at 212 North I Street in Oskaloosa.

On this day in 1969, Johnny Cash’s album Johnny Cash At San Quentin was certified Gold. The album would eventually go Triple Platinum in 2003. The album was also nominated for a number of Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, and won Best Male Country Vocal Performance for “A Boy Named Sue.”

Michael Ray’s “Kiss You In The Morning” Is #1

Michael Ray’s single “Kiss You In The Morning” sits atop the country charts this week, giving Michael his first #1 song. With this #1, Ray becomes the first debut male artists to have a chart-topping single since Sam Hunt did so last year, and he’s also the only debut male artist to reach the chart’s summit so far this year.

Difficult Heart Slate Awaits Soccer Teams

The Statesmen soccer programs join a league with some serious talent and will look to move up the ladder as the Heart of America Athletic Conference released its preseason rankings Tuesday.

William Penn is ninth on the men’s side, while the women are 10th in the 11-team conference (Peru State does not offer soccer). The men were 7-7-4 (2-1-3 MCC) a year ago and the women are coming off a 7-8-3 campaign (3-2-1 MCC).

Missouri Valley and Grand View, the 2014 league champions of the Heart and the Midwest Collegiate Conference, share the top spot for the men. The Benedictine (Kan.) women are #1 in the preseason and look to defend their crown. MVC, GVU, #3 MidAmerica Nazarene, and #4 Baker all qualified for the NAIA Men’s National Championships last year, while Benedictine was the lone women’s qualifier.

WPU begins the men’s season on August 26 with a road matchup against Ashford. The women start 2015 on August 29 in Indiana at the Calumet-St. Joseph Tournament versus former MCC and future Heart foe Mount Mercy.

Iowa Man Accused Of Robbing Fargo Motel Pleads Not Guilty

An Iowa man accused of robbing a downtown Fargo motel at gunpoint has pleaded not guilty in federal court.

Thirty-year-old Eric Webb, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is charged with five counts, including armed robbery, use of a firearm during a crime of violence, and possession a firearm by a convicted felon.

Webb was shot by a Fargo police officer shortly after the June 4 holdup. He spent time in a Fargo hospital before he was transferred to the Cass County Jail.

Trial is scheduled for Oct. 13 in Fargo. State charges against Webb have been dismissed.

Neil Fulton, head of the federal public defender’s office for the Dakotas, says defense attorneys are reviewing the case and “will know more” in the coming weeks.

16th Annual S&S Fishing & Rental USRA Fall Nationals Set For Oct. 23-25 At Southern New Mexico Speedway

The S&S Fishing & Rental USRA Fall Nationals presented by Barnett Harley-Davidson and NAPA Auto Parts is set to happen for the 16th straight year on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 23-25, at the Southern New Mexico Speedway in Las Cruces, N.M.

Sunday’s finale will award $10,000 to the winner and each main event starter will earn no less than $1,500-up from $1,000 to start in 2014.

More than $50,000 is earmarked for Sunday’s feature race alone, with $800 guaranteed to all “B” Main starters and $500 guaranteed for all “C” Main starters.

And once again this year’s main event winner could walk away with $25,000 by taking the Mesilla Valley Transportation Front Row Challenge. Both front row starters in Sunday’s “A” Main will have the opportunity to start at the back of the field for $25,000 to win.

And right now through Oct. 1, the entry fee for USRA Modified competitors is just $200. After Oct. 1 the entry fee is $300 per driver.

Hometown favorite Stormy Scott is the defending champion of the event. Other past winners include Terry Phillips (2012-13), Jason Cummins (2011), Rodney Sanders (2010), Johnny Scott (2009), Eddie Martin (2005-07), Ron Jones (2000-01, 2004), Monte Bolton (2003) and Royal Jones (2002).

Heat race passing points will be used to determine main event line-ups. The top 5 in Friday’s feature race advance to inside row of Sunday’s “A” Main, while the top 5 in Saturday’s nightcap will fill the outside five rows of Sunday’s “A” Main.

In addition to the USRA Modifieds, USRA B-Mods, USRA Stock Cars and Super Trucks will compete each night. USRA national points will be awarded all three nights to licensed USRA competitors.

On Friday, gates open at 5 p.m. and racing begins at 7 p.m. General admission is $10 or a Family Pack is just $25. On Saturday, gates open at 3 p.m. with racing at 5 p.m. General admission is $12 and a Family Pack is $25. Sunday’s finale will see gates opening at 12 noon with racing at 2 p.m. General admission is $15 and a Family Pack is $30.

Kids ages 10 and under get in free each day with a paid adult. Pit passes are $40 each night or a three-day pit pass is $110.

An open practice for all classes is slated for Thursday, Oct. 22, from 6 to 10 p.m. Pit passes are $20 with free admission to the grandstands.

The Southern New Mexico Speedway is a wide, semi-banked 3/8-mile clay oval located 11 miles west of Las Cruces at the Southern New Mexico State Fairgrounds. On this day in 1951, Hank Williams took his tune “Hey Good Lookin'” to the top of the charts. The song would go on to be covered by many artists, and in 2001, Hank’s version was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
