Two Area County Fair Queens Place High At The Iowa State Fair

With the Iowa State Fair on-going, the Fair Queen was announced over the weekend and a couple of area county fair queens were among the leaders in the final results.

Marion County Fair Queen Kiley Elder was the second runner-up in the contest. She is from Ackworth. She was joined by Sarah Ruby Clark of Albia, who was the Monroe County Fair Queen. Clark finished as the third runner-up.

Ellen Schlarmann of Jones County was named the Iowa State Fair Queen in 2015.

According to the Iowa State Fair website, the judging is based on personality, attitude, awareness, leadership, citizenship, contribution to community, overall appearance, charm, and poise.

Police: Driver Accused Of Hitting Iowa Cyclist Was Drunk

Authorities say a driver accused of hitting a cyclist in Des Moines had a blood alcohol content that was nearly three times the legal limit to drive.

Des Moines police say a preliminary breath test showed 31-year-old Jonathan Levya Rodriguez had the elevated level following the Sunday morning crash. Authorities say Rodriguez was uncooperative in agreeing to additional testing.

Rodriguez is accused of hitting 41-year-old Gregary Wade Franck while the cyclist was participating in a local biking event. Franck was critically injured and remains at a local hospital. Two other cyclists received minor injuries in the crash.

Rodriguez faces several charges, including operating while intoxicated and serious injury by reckless driving. Court records do not list an attorney.

Sobbing Clinches 2015 USMTS Rookie Of The Year title

Everybody who had previously competed against Jesse Sobbing on a dirt track knew that when he jumped up to the big leagues in 2015 that he would be a force to be reckoned with.

And while some fans-and perhaps even a handful of his fellow drivers-were skeptical about his chances for success in his first full season running with the Best of the Best in the United States Modified Touring Series, those doubts have been put to rest.

With eight points races still remaining in the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s Cup powered by S&S Fishing & Rental, Sobbing has mathematically clinched the 2015 USMTS Rookie for the Year Award and added another gold star to an already-glowing racing résumé.

The only driver to compete in every USMTS regional points race in 2015, Sobbing led the rookie standings for the first time this season following the event on May 1 at the Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Mo.Jesse Sobbing

One day later, he won his first career USMTS main event by outrunning Terry Phillips and Rodney Sanders at the Randolph County Raceway in Moberly, Mo., and he never trailed again.

Driving the No.99 Home Pride Motorsports MB Custom powered by Sput’s Racing Engines, the multi-time I.M.C.A. national and NASCAR regional champion from Malvern, Iowa, has traveled with his veteran crew chief, Mike Gocke, to every USMTS Casey’s Cup Series show this season.

In his 44 starts, Sobbing has recorded one win, 17 top-fives and 30 top-ten finishes while racking up more than $40,000 in earnings.

Throughout four regional points races, the team finished third in the final standings in two regions and fourth in the other two. Sobbing came into the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s Cup as the points leader and currently rides in third behind Rodney Sanders and Jason Hughes.

At 33 years of age, Sobbing is not the oldest to win the USMTS Rookie of the Year Award. That distinction belongs to Scott Green who was 37 when he claimed the honor in 2007. Conversely, Trevor Hunt was the youngest recipient at 14 years of age when he won it in 2013.

Rookie points are awarded for each eligible driver’s best twenty-four (24) points-earning performances during the season. To be eligible for the USMTS Rookie of the Year Award, a driver may have participated in no more than twenty-four (24) USMTS events prior to the current year and/or may not have won a USMTS “A” Main during a prior year.

Sobbing will be looking to take a step toward one more title when the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s Cup powered by S&S Fishing & Rental returns to America’s heartland this weekend for a pair of critical events in the battle to become the 2015 champion of the United States Modified Touring Series.

Action kicks off this Friday, Aug. 21, at the Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kan., for the first of two $3,000-to-win blockbuster events with the first heat race at 7:30 p.m.

Tremendous recruiting will hopefully put the Statesmen volleyball team back on the map as the 2015 season starts this weekend.

The WPU coaching staff, headed by Jennifer Carlson, worked tirelessly in the offseason to bring in a slew of new talent as the navy and gold look to improve upon its 2014 campaign (2-30 overall, 0-7 MCC). The Statesmen will need to get better in all facets as their new league–the Heart of America Athletic Conference–is considered one of the top in the NAIA.

Several starters return to the court to bolster the squad in the early weeks as the newcomers find their way. Seniors
Leyra Jusino (Bayamon, P.R., General Biology) and Danielle Breeher (St. Louis, Mo., Biology) join Shawni Wills (Jr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Biology) to provide that leadership. Breeher is coming off an all-league campaign last fall.

Right Side Hitter
Wills posted 162 kills last year, but her role likely will be heightened in 2015, leading to bigger stat lines. Natalie Sieck (Sr., Ankeny, Iowa, Sociology) is also back and will battle with Kiera Macpherson (Fr., West Chicago, Ill., General Mathematics) for playing time behind Wills.

Outside Hitter
It appears a new arm will be swinging on the other pole as Savanna Hartman (Jr., Morgan Hill, Calif., Psychology), Claire Simmons (Fr., Williamsburg, Iowa, Psychology), and Hannah Dustin (So., Albia, Iowa, Exercise Science) compete to take the starting nod. Several others have shown promise in early practices as well.

Middle Hitter
Erika Getz (Sr., Parsons, Kan., Physical Education) has the inside track on the inside position due to her year in the system, but will be pushed by Justine Arguelles (Fr., Ventura, Calif., Biology), Nicole Harrison (Jr., San Diego, Calif., Biology), and Lilly Martinez (Jr., Oakland, Calif., Psychology).

Getz tallied 106 winners with 38 blocks (team best) in 2014.

Setter

Arguably the most important position on the floor is also the deepest for WPU with Jusino headlining the field after managing 766 assists a year ago. Emily McHugh (Sr., Plainfield, Ill., Pre-Law & Psychology) has also manned the position over her first three collegiate seasons to provide the navy and gold with additional quality experience.

Karissa Wilcoxson (So., Ottumwa, Iowa, Education), Haley Smith (Fr., Adrian, Mich., Elementary Education), and Katelyn Crothers (Fr., Mishawaka, Ind., Biology) seek to improve in their initial William Penn seasons.

Libero/Defensive Specialist

Breeher’s steadiness on the back line will likely earn her the defensive spot, but Ashley Miller (Fr., Kalona, Iowa) has also turned heads in the preseason. Breeher had 410 digs as a junior.

Schedule/Conference

WPU’s 2015 slate will begin Saturday with a triangular at Mount Mercy, while other big non-conference tournaments include going to Northwestern and St. Mary (Neb.) before venturing into Heart play.

Evangel and fellow new Heart member Grand View are coming off national tournament trips in 2014. EU edged GVU in the preseason standings, while the Statesmen will have their work cut out for them in the final standings slot.

Carrie Underwood Celebrates “Little Toy Guns” Being #1

Carrie Underwood gathered with friends and music business folks on Friday (8/14) to celebrate the chart-topping success of her 21st number one song “Little Toy Guns.” Before the party got underway, Carrie said, “I’m so happy that we got to celebrate ‘Little Toy Guns’ being a number-one. As a writer, I’m happy that we wrote a song that is great musically’ it has a great vibe.”

Business As Usual for Mahaska County Board of Supervisors

The Mahaska County Board of Supervisors met for their regularly scheduled meeting Monday morning at the Mahaska County Courthouse in Oskaloosa. In a quick meeting, the major point of discussion became the possible position of County Administrator.

Supervisor Mike VanderMolen stated he believed that the role of county supervisor cannot be held by average people, because their schedules do not allow it.

VanderMolen said if there was a role created called a County Administrator to handle the day-to-day business from the county, it would pull back some of the responsibilities and the time needed to be a county supervisor and allow more people to seek the position.

Chair Mark Doland stated that he felt the position diluted the relationship between the county supervisors and the voters, as the supervisors would only likely be briefed on certain county happenings as they go through the county administrator first. Doland said the system has worked for many years and hasn’t needed adjustment.

VanderMolen countered that by saying that even though it has worked in the past, it may not be the way it needs to be done in the future. He also mentioned that he believes that the Board of Supervisors in Mahaska County could see a growth to a five member board over the current three member format.

Vice-Chair Willie VanWeelden said he would need to look into the idea more, and they will continue to discuss it at a later time.

In other business, bookkeeping was the theme of the meeting.

The Board of Supervisors appointed Maquetta Huffman the Mahaska County Mental Health Advocate. Huffman already works in ten counties in this position.

The Board also authorized a contract for a project on the Cordova Avenue Bridge. They also fixed the date of September 8, 2015, for the public hearing on the proposal to enter into a Development Agreement with The Welders Shield LLC and Co-Line Welding, Inc.

The Board also reported that nothing new has come up in the case for the Mid-Iowa Mental Health Region, and said that the appeal is scheduled to be heard on Friday, August 21st.

Doland mentioned in the committee reports that he spoke with the Mahaska County Landfill south of Oskaloosa about housing a site for people to drop off their hazardous waste materials, but they didn’t seem interested in their site being the place because they believe they are too far away from most of the county for people to bring their materials. The Board agreed that they should continue discussions, as the landfill seems like the best place for these collections to take place.

The next scheduled meeting of the Mahaska County Board of Supervisors is scheduled for Monday, September 7th, at 9 AM at the Mahaska County Courthouse in Oskaloosa.

Cup Series Win List Holding At 11

With Matt Kenseth’s victory Sunday at Michigan International Speedway, the list of Sprint Cup Series race winners this year is holding steady at eleven – one fewer than in 2014 – with just three races remaining in the regular season. Kyle Busch has matched Jimmie Johnson with a series-leading four wins and is now eligible for the post-season Chase, sitting twenty-ninth in the point standings.

With a maximum of fourteen race winners now possible, the remaining spots in the sixteen-driver post-season field will be filled based on regular-season point standings … The five highest-placed non-winning drivers in the standings today are Jamie McMurray, Paul Menard, Ryan Newman, Jeff Gordon and Clint Bowyer – who leads Aric Almirola by twenty-three points for what would be the final spot on The Chase Grid.

The William Penn football team will look to a veteran crew to keep it a major national player as it enters the Heart of America Athletic Conference this fall.

The Statesmen, headed by Todd Hafner, were perennially strong in the MSFA’s Midwest League over the past decade. WPU was 7-4 in 2014 (3-2 MWL), but as newbies in the Heart, it will have to prove itself all over again in a conference that features six ranked teams in the preseason poll.

Tyler Hafner (Sr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Communications) will guide the offense behind a tremendous line, while Hunter Barry (Jr., Morris, Ill., Physical Education) and Isaac Samek (Sr., Bolivar, Mo., Industrial Technology) top a defensive unit that might be the best ever assembled in Hafner’s reign.

Quarterback

After serving as a backup the past two campaigns, Hafner finally starts 2015 as the front-running incumbent. In 2014, Hafner grounded it out for 150 yards (one touchdown) and aired it out for another 451 yards (7 TDs).

Returner Eric Cooper (So., Aguanga, Calif., Human Services) and incoming freshman Nick Locher (Fr., Owensboro, Ky., Physical Education) present tremendous options behind Hafner.

Slot Back

Nate Tvedt (Sr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Business Management) and Jonathan Ward (So., Terry, Miss., Undecided) have risen to the top with the experience factor, but fellow returners Kyle Nitz (Sr., Broken Arrow, Okla., Biology), Carl Sivels (Fr., Washington, Iowa, Physical Education), and Marquise Thomas (Fr., Ann Arbor, Mich., Industrial Technology) should also earn some carries.

Among returning slot backs, Tvedt is the leader in rushing yards with 219 (two touchdowns) last fall, while Ward collected 74 yards last year.

Alex Schliesmann (Jr., Fairmont, Minn., Exercise Science) could also step into playing time right away as a junior college transfer.

Fullback

Tyler Goble (Jr., Des Moines, Iowa, Secondary Education) looks to add to the tradition of hard-nosed fullbacks after earning 409 rushing yards in 2014 (one score).

Amos Johnson (So., Rock Island, Ill., Mechanical Engineering), Brandon Polito (Jr., St. Louis, Mo., Undecided), and Hunter Condit (Fr., Perry, Okla., Communications) also return to take and deliver blows with runs up the middle.

Lyle Jennings (Jr., Toronto, Ohio, Exercise Science) has picked up the system quickly as a new back.

Wide Receiver

The run-crazy Statesmen may decide to adjust their scheme a bit after seeing the talent available on the outsides as senior starters Jatavius Stewart (Rock Hill, S.C., Biology) and Kramer Patterson (Ozark, Mo., Secondary Education) return to headline the receivers. To call Stewart a big-play receiver is to say the Grand Canyon is a pothole–he caught only 13 balls but picked up 337 yards (25.9 avg.) and six touchdowns last year.

Patterson hauled in seven receptions for 133 yards and three scores, while fellow returner Desmond Douglas (Jr., Decatur, Ala., Physical Education) had six catches for 68 yards. Austin Cosgrove (Sr., Moravia, Iowa, Undecided) and Barry Williams (So., Lawton, Okla., Undecided) have also gained knowledge in the past and will be assets.

Tight End

Devin Verwers (Sr., Norwalk, Iowa, Industrial Technology) returns to start at tight end and will be backed up by Cory Fitzjarrell (So., Anderson, Calif., Industrial Technology); the pair will both be on the line in two-tight end formations.

Offensive Line

The engine’s horsepower will be provided by five seniors who have been mainstays in the trenches. Center Hea Tuifua (Sr., Salt Lake City, Utah, Industrial Technology) is back after being a Second-Team All-American, while J.T. Dotson (Sr., Jenks, Okla., Business Management) was a second-team all-league performer at right tackle.

Right guard Jarrett Rogers (Sr., Ozark, Mo., Business Management), left guard Ryan Westmoreland (Sr., Bolivar, Mo., Secondary Education), and left tackle Kalob Gist (Sr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Business Management) wrap up the remainder of crew that, if healthy, should help WPU gobble up yardage at will.

Returners Connor Menown (Sr., Springfield, Mo., Physical Education) and Wes Leffelman (So., DeKalb, Ill., Exercise Science) will join up with newcomers Jake Wills (Exercise Science, Oskaloosa, Iowa, Undecided), Nick Jackson (Fr., Broken Arrow, Okla., Biology), and Beau Picard (Fr., Ozark, Mo., Biology) for impressive but untested depth.

Defensive Line

The other side of the trenches is a bit younger, but experience is certainly not wanting. Hunter Barry (Jr., Morris, Ill., Physical Education) was a first-team all-MWL pick last year and will be a run-stopper extraordinaire at the nose position. He will receive considerable competition, though, from Malik Young (Jr., Peoria, Ill., Physical Education) and Terrance Grimsley (Fr., Lawton, Okla., Exercise Science).

Barry had 49 tackles (eight for loss) with two sacks in 2014.

William Penn’s best defensive ends are also returners with Clayton Temaat (Sr., Alba, Mo., Industrial Technology), Cameron Colbert (Sr., Jenks, Okla., Business Management), Taylan Ybarra (Sr., Wellington, Kan., Education), and Cooper Gosch (Fr., Reeds Springs, Okla., Education) looking to stop both opposing ball carriers as well as sack their quarterbacks.

Temaat tallied a 2014-high three sacks last year.

Linebacker

If WPU’s opponents can get through that formidable front, it does not get any easier for them with Isaac Samek (Sr., Bolivar, Mo., Industrial Technology) and his squad of linebackers impatiently waiting. Samek led WPU with 94 tackles last year and tops all returners with three interceptions.

Jake Baptiste (So., Salt Lake City, Utah, Psychology) is projected to lead the middle LB position with Desmond Wills (So., Birmingham, Ala., Undecided) behind him.

Kevin Shrauger (Sr., Nixa, Mo., Physical Education) and Mason Wisse (So., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Physical Education) will battle for another opening, while Mason Rohr (So., Nixa, Mo., Biology) has the edge for the final spot. Kane Vigier (Fr., Baytown, Texas, Exercise Science) is next on the depth chart behind Rohr.

Shrauger was second in tackles last autumn with 59, while Baptiste corralled 25 ball carriers.

Defensive Back

Previous starts may be few among the cornerback applicants, but Hafner believes athleticism will quickly trump experience.

Antonio Brown (Jr., Midwest City, Okla., Undecided) appears to be a shoo-in for one side, while Dajon Shaw (Fr., Highland Park, Mich., Undecided) and Jaylen Malbrough (Fr., Fort Worth, Texas, Communications) are facing off with Shawn Charles (So., Rochester, N.Y., Undecided) for the nod on the opposite end of the turf.

The safety positions, as the word says, feel much safer with key 2014 players Keegan Murphy (Sr., Ark City, Kan., Physical Education) and Walter Eastwood (Jr., Garden City, Mo., Computer Science) back. Kyle Baldassarre (So., Webb City, Mo., Industrial Technology) and incoming freshman Kody Jarvis (Riverton, Utah, Exercise Science) are likely to receive plenty of snaps as well. Murphy recorded 48 tackles last year.

Special Teams

Cody Brigham (Jr., Spencer, Iowa, Elementary Education) was brought in for the sole purpose of longsnapping and the coaching staff is thrilled with what they have seen so far.

On the receiving side of the snap should again by Hafner, but there will be a new person trying to send the ball through the uprights. Left-footed freshman kicker Samson Tamijani (Houston, Texas, Communications) will not only look to score points in the kicking game, but also returns the Statesmen to their preferred two-punter formation.

Stewart and Nitz have returned to again return punts and kickoffs for William Penn. Stewart had 15 attempts for a 19.5 average, while Nitz averaged 18.6 yards over nine tries.

Conference

With a full 11 games on their Heart schedule, the Statesmen venture right into meaningful contests as they travel to #9 Missouri Valley for the home opener on August 29. The following two weekends, including its home opener on September 5 versus #8 MidAmerica Nazarene, are also against ranked foes.

WPU will welcome Avila to Oskaloosa on October 3 for Homecoming, while its Niles Media Group nationally-televised game against Benedictine (Kan.) is on October 31. The navy and gold, who are #19 in the NAIA and picked third in the North Division, have five home games this year.
