Plea Hearing Scheduled For Oskaloosa Man Charged With Sexual Abuse

A plea hearing has been scheduled for 26-year-old Tony Joe Bakalar Jr. of Oskaloosa, who has been charged with 3rd Degree Sexual Abuse, a Class C felony.

Bakalar assaulted a 13-year-old victim at a residence in Hamilton. The victim told her mother and when Bakalar was confronted, he fled before turning himself in to the Oskaloosa Police Department.

Bakalar’s case had a jury trial scheduled for September, but it’s now been removed from the court schedule. His plea hearing will take place this Friday, August 21st.

William Penn has a new men’s soccer skipper who knows what it takes to win in its new conference, pushing expectations high for the Statesmen in 2015.

The biggest squad in program history is hitting the pitch this fall for new coach Jaymee Highcock and he plans to have the navy and gold improve off a 7-7-4 record last season (2-1-3 MCC). Highcock has invaluable insider knowledge about the Heart of America Athletic Conference as both a player at Benedictine (Kan.) and coach at Avila.

Not only is the Statesmen roster packed with returning talent, Highcock is also pleased with all of the great play from his army of new individuals.

Angelo Kelly (Sr., Ottumwa, Iowa, Physical Education) heads the way after being selected to all-MCC recognition the past two years, while Sergio Carro (Sr., London, England, Communications) also returns after earning an honorable mention in an abbreviated 2014 campaign.

Forward

Carro played in just eight games at the end of the 2014 campaign, but served as a big spark with two goals and two assists.

Andrew Valett (Sr., Davenport, Iowa, Physical Education) also added two goals, while Facundo Benitez (Jr., Buenos Aires, Argentina, Business Management) managed one goal with one assist. Francis Koroma (Jr., Brooklyn Park, Minn., General Accounting) returns to bolster the attacking crew as well.

Tom Simms (Fr., Derbyshire, England) will also look to be a big contributor in his first collegiate season.

Midfielder

Kelly enters his final year with numerous accolades in his rearview and will look to cap it all off with another spectacular showing. The senior managed two goals with five assists a season ago.

He will be joined in the midfield by mostly new faces as Joni Cruz (Jr., Salinas, Calif.), Tom Denat (Fr., Seignosse, France), Angus Dibley (Fr., Gymea Bay, Australia, Communications), and Loong Ly (Sr., London, England, Physical Education) have taken the early edge on the other spots.

Defender

Defensive mainstay Ben Creeger (Sr., Phoenix, Ariz., Business Management) will steer the back line as he also tries to finish off his collegiate career with a bang. Fellow returner Bruno Vencovsky (Jr., Sao Paolo, Brazil, Mechanical Engineering) and 2014 redshirt Xavier Martinez (Fr., Las Vegas, Nev., Biology) add experience for Highcock’s defense.

A trio of English freshmen have also performed at a high level during the preseason; the group includes Lewis Hubbard (Fr., Colchester, England), Jack Kindell-Brown (Fr., Chelmsford, England, Physical Education), and Steve Lee (Fr., Camberley, England, Exercise Science).

Goalkeeper

WPU has had at least one returning varsity keeper in its arsenal for quite some time, but this year the squad is thin in returning talent. In spite of that, Highcock really likes his 2015 group and has high hopes for them. The team’s two returners–Caleb Pipes-Goulsbra (So., Lincoln, England, Exercise Science) and Emmanuel Esparza (Fr., Posen, Ill., Physical Education (K-12))–will battle against newcomer Max Stamer (Fr., Salzgitter, Germany, Secondary Education) to earn the right to compete between the bars.

Schedule

The 2015 slate begins on August 26 with a road matchup versus top-25 Ashford. Other top non-conference action will follow against Mount Mercy at the Calumet-St. Joseph Invitational and Columbia (Mo.) as Highcock gets his squad ready for stiff competition each time out in the Heart.

Conference

As if the Heart was not already a great league, perennial national powerhouse Grand View joins WPU as MCC transfers to make for a ridiculous conference. The Statesmen are ninth in the league’s preseason ranking, but Highcock believes his team can achieve much more. GVU and Missouri Valley–the 2014 Heart champion–are expected at the top of this year’s standings.

Blaney Takes Checkered Flag In Thunder Valley

Ryan Blaney got the best of Matt Crafton on the night’s final restart Wednesday at Bristol Motor Speedway, pulling away from the field as Crafton’s Toyota sputtered and failed to come up to full speed.Blaney took the checkered flag a half-second in front of runner-up Kyle Busch to give Brad Keselowski Racing its second straight Truck Series victory in “Thunder Valley.” Blaney’s win in the Number-29 Ford snapped Toyota’s five-race
winning streak. Rookies John Hunter Nemechek, Daniel Hemric, Brandon Jones and Erik Jones took positions three through six with Crafton holding on for seventh place.

The race extended two laps past its scheduled distance after a late spin by Ty Dillon produced the fifth yellow flag of the night – setting up the decisive green-white-checkered finish. Blaney led a race-high forty laps and had to overcome an early penalty to notch his fourth career victory. NASCAR determined that he jumped the restart following the night’s first caution.

The pass-through penalty on pit road forced Blaney well off the pace. But he steadily climbed back into contention, had himself in position to win in the closing laps and took advantage of Crafton’s balky restart to claim victory … The race was red-flagged for 45 minutes due to rain with thirty-four laps left and Crafton leading. The two-time defending series champion led all but four of the remaining laps once racing resumed. But at the end of the night, he yielded to Blaney – who led the final three trips around Bristol’s high-banked half-mile.

Two Ottumwa Residents Arrested For Possession of Meth

On Wednesday, at approximately 7:00 a.m., officers from the Ottumwa Police Department, Wapello County Sheriff’s Department, US Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Southeast Iowa Inter-Agency Drug Task Force, executed a search warrant at the James and Brandie Grace residence located at 102 S. Van Buren, in Ottumwa.

As a result of the search, officers seized items consistent with the distribution of methamphetamine, marijuana, 2 loaded handguns, and US currency.

James Alan Grace, age 45, was arrested and charged with the following:
· Possession with the Intent to Deliver More Than 5 Grams of Methamphetamine, a Class “B” Felony.
· Possession of a Firearm by a Felon, a Class “D” Felony
· Failure to affix a Drug Tax Stamp, a Class “D” Felony
James Grace is currently already on Federal Parole for drug trafficking offenses.

Brandie Lee Grace, age 39, was arrested and charged with the following:
· Possession with the Intent to Deliver More Than 5 Grams of Methamphetamine, a Class “B” Felony.
· Failure to affix a Drug Tax Stamp, a Class “D” Felony

Both of the Grace’s are being held in the Wapello County Jail.

A criminal charge is merely an accusation and a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, To Host “Museum Madness” On Sunday August 30th

The Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, will host the “National Sprint Car Museum Madness” program on Sunday, August 30, in conjunction with that night’s co-sanctioned National Sprint League (NSL) and Interstate Racing Association (IRA) sprint car race. The museum will be giving away sprint car-related prizes from its museum store to many lucky fans in attendance.

Said museum curator Tom Schmeh today, “For me personally, it is going to be fun to go back to Wisconsin in less than two weeks for this IRA/NSL shoot-out. I went to a lot of Sunday night Badger midget car races at Sun Prairie in the late 1980’s, prior to joining the non-profit museum foundation. Grant Rankin and I will bring our brand-new GF1-Ti22/Shaver ‘410’ sprint raffle car and we will be joined by long-time museum volunteer Larry Janicsek at this event. We will be giving away a lot of neat prizes to many of those on-hand for this special event. If you are a sprint car fan in Wisconsin, you will want to be at Sun Prairie next Sunday night, August 30, for the IRA/NSL-sanctioned winged 410-cubic-inch sprint car races and Museum Madness.”

The museum booth at Angell Park Speedway will feature the 2015-16 raffle car and a table with the following informational brochures: museum membership program, Racers at Rest program, Stay in School program, Expand the Dream program, A Brick at a Time program, and museum store catalog. In addition, over thirty museum-related special prizes will be given away to lucky fans that night.

The “National Sprint Car Museum Madness” promotional program will take place at the following NSL races this late summer and fall:

August 28 – Moberly, Missouri,
August 30 – Sun Prairie, Wisconsin (with Interstate Racing Association),
September 4 – Jackson, Minnesota,
September 6 – Brandon, South Dakota, and

Hunting Rules City of Oskaloosa Urban Deer Management Program

The City of Oskaloosa is preparing for the upcoming 2015/2016 Urban Deer Hunting season, to be held within the Oskaloosa city limits. The 2015/2016 hunting season will run from September 19th, 2015 thru January 10th, 2016. During this season, qualified hunters will be allowed to harvest deer within the city limits using bows and arrows.

Bow hunters interested in participating in this hunting season are required to pass an archery proficiency test, consisting of 5 shots, made from 20 yards. Hunters must score at least 80{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b} accuracy, within an 8-inch circle target, to qualify for this hunt. Hunters are allowed two attempts to pass this test.

Two testing dates have been set for this upcoming season. This testing will be held at “After Hours Archery” located at 216 North B Street. The dates and times for this testing are: Thursday, September 3rd from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, September 5th from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Any hunter interested in participating in this hunting season must attend, and pass, one of these proficiency tests. Hunter’s need to bring a current form of identification and their current/valid Iowa Hunting License with them to this testing.

The Oskaloosa Urban Deer Management Program has an established set of rules, which each hunter must follow to participate in this program. A copy of these rules is available on the City of Oskaloosa website.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has allotted up to 200 licenses to be used during the 2015/2016 city season.
