Statesmen Defeat Waldorf 35-13 In Home Opener

Oskaloosa–The William Penn wrestling team took advantage of a pair of forfeits and dominated the lighter weights to cruise past Waldorf 35-13 in its home-opening dualTuesday.

The Statesmen (1-0) won five of the eight contested matches and also picked up a two victories at open weights to keep the Warriors (0-3) winless this season.

John Altieri (Fr., Warwick, R.I., Sociology) set the tone early with a dominating performance at 125 pounds.  He held a sizeable lead before finally winning by fall in 4:18 over Kyle Penalosa.

133-pounder Jeremy Andujar (So., Tampa, Fla., Biology) was also in control throughout, winning by technical fall against Jacob Adams 24-8.

Fabian Rodriguez (Fr., Manassas, Va., Business Management) extended the advantage to 17-0 with a forfeit at 141 pounds, while Bryan Pittman (Sr., Flossmoor, Ill., Information Technology) made his season debut with a 14-11 decision over Dustin Samudio at 149 pounds.

By that point, the team victory was locked up, but the navy and gold were not done.  157-pounder Logan Loftus (So., Marengo, Iowa, Industrial Technology) then rallied to pin Zach Milks in 5:37.

Waldorf got on the board with victories at 165 and 174, but then Johnny Hopper (So., Basehor, Kan., Psychology) pushed the margin back to 32-7 with the second of WPU’s forfeits at 184.

Following a WC fall at 197, Matthew Cuthbert (Fr., Yucaipa, Calif., Sociology) closed out the evening by holding off Jacob Pinedo 3-2 at heavyweight.

Next Up: William Penn travels to Decorah Saturday to compete in the Luther Open.  Action begins at 9 a.m.

Blake Shelton has been tapped to host Nickelodeon’s 2016 Kids’ Choice Awards, airing live on Saturday, March 12th. The Kids Choice Awards Honors the favorites from film, music, and television, and gives kids a front-row seat to slime, stunts and celebrities. And yes, he has already been slimed.

Point Penalities Upheld For Truck Series Team

The National Motorsports Appeals Panel has upheld the majority of penalties that were assessed to the Number- 33 G-M-S Racing team, which competes in the Camping World Truck Series, for illegal brackets and supports found on Brandon Jones’ Chevrolet Silverado during opening-day inspection October 23rd at Talladega Superspeedway. Crew chief Shane Huffman’s suspension has been reduced from three races to two. But his ten-thousand-dollar fine, and the twenty-five championship points stripped from season totals for Jones and team owner Maurice Gallagher Junior will stand – as will Huffman’s six-month probation.

Jones finished second to Timothy Peters in the October 24th fred’s 250 … He’s among thirty-three drivers on the preliminary entry list for Friday night’s Lucas Oil 150 at Phoenix International Raceway, the next-to-last round of the 2015 season.

Rookie Erik Jones, leading the point standings, is the defending race winner on the one-mile desert oval.

Branstad Meets Federal Official On Medicaid Privatization

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Governor Terry Branstad met with a top federal official in Washington to promote Iowa’s Medicaid privatization effort, which has come under scrutiny over the speed of the transition.
Branstad said Tuesday that he met with Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell. He said he stressed the transition plans as the state moves its $4.2 billion Medicaid program to private companies, including that patients can keep current providers for a period of time.
Last week, federal officials expressed concerns about the timetable for the changes, slated to take place January 1st.
A group of Iowa hospitals have sued seeking to halt or delay the process. In the suit, filed last week, the hospitals argue the new system would improperly use money from a trust fund they contribute to.

Marcellus And Schroeder Earn Weekly Conference Honors

PELLA—For the second time in as many weeks, Central College football players Aaron Marcellus (kicker, junior, Hudson) and Mitch Schroeder (linebacker, senior, Lowden/North Cedar HS) have been named Iowa Conference players of the week.

Marcellus was named special teams player of the week while Schroeder took home the title of defensive player of the week following a Dutch 38-23 victory over Buena Vista Saturday on Senior Day.

Marcellus does it all— Marcellus almost duplicated his performance last week, connecting on another 32-yard field goal this week and nailing five extra points in the win. His field goal early in the third quarter put the Dutch up 10-7 and they would never relinquish the lead. The junior kicker averaged 55.3 yards per kickoff, including one touchback and also punted once for 21 yards.

Schroeder picks two—Schroeder picked up right where he left off last week, intercepting two Buena Vista passes to give him a league leading five on the season. His two picks came within a 3:30 span from late in the third quarter to early in the fourth. Schroeder returned the interceptions for a total of 18 yards. He also added two tackles and a pass breakup in his final game at Ron and Joyce Schipper Stadium.

The Dutch (6-3 overall, 4-2 conf.) will play their final game of the season Saturday at league-champion Dubuque. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Iowa Speedway President To Trade Running The Track For Running Routes

NEWTON, Iowa (November 10, 2015) – The Iowa Barnstormers Free Agent Camp kicks off Saturday, Nov. 14 in Pella, Iowa where players from around the country will work to earn a spot on the Barnstormers’ 2016 roster. One implausible player hoping to land a roster spot will be Iowa Speedway President Jimmy Small.

“I’ve been a passionate football fan since I was a kid, and when I heard about the open tryouts, I realized that it was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up,” said Iowa Speedway President Jimmy Small. “By no means do I think this will be easy, but I’ve learned a few things about speed, teamwork, and aerodynamics in racing which will give me an advantage. I’m going to this tryout with high expectations, and I will be prepared to compete on Saturday. My training starts today, and my goal is to finish with more than just a commemorative Barnstormers Free Agent Camp T-shirt on Saturday.”

Named one of the top 10 sports executives under the age of 30, according to SportsPro Magazine, Small will temporarily relinquish negotiating contracts and race sanctions in favor of reading defenses and running pass routes. The former high school basketball standout will be “coached” by current Iowa Barnstormers during the tryout.

“I am beyond excited to have Iowa Speedway President, Jimmy Small on hand at our free agent tryout in Pella in hopes of earning a contract,” said Iowa Barnstormers Head Coach Joe Brannen.  “It is a true pleasure to have a person of his caliber not only show interest in the storied tradition of our organization, but also have the excitement and determination he does for making our squad.  As a coach at these workouts, one thing you are always looking for that can’t be coached, is speed, something Mr. Small knows all about.  We will have 2016 contracts on hand, and I am looking forward to seeing if Jimmy has what it takes to join our 2016 roster.”

The annual open tryout will take place Nov. 14 at the Pella Recreation Center Field House in Pella. The tryouts are open to the public including Iowa Speedway race fans. Any athlete 18 years of age and older, non-college eligible and interested in playing for the Iowa Barnstormers Indoor Football Team during the 2016 season is invited to participate in the tryout. Registration opens at 11 a.m. CST with tryouts starting at noon.

Chris Stapleton’s Traveller Hits #1

Chris Stapleton’s album Traveller has taken the #1 spot on the All-Genre Billboard 200 Albums Chart, selling roughly 140,000 copies last week. The surge in album sales came after Chris had a big night at the 49th Annual CMA Awards on Wednesday (11/4), winning trophies in all three categories he was nominated in and giving one of the most talked-about performances of the night with pop star Justin Timberlake.

The Name is Bond

So the new James Bond movie, Spectre, came out on Friday. I’m a casual James Bond fan, so I haven’t seen it yet. I’m probably going to go see it in a few weeks when most people have already seen it so the theater is pretty much empty. But anyway, Digg.com posted a couple of videos about 007 on YouTube last week, and this one is my favorite.

Also, there was a trend on Twitter about James Bond, #FakeJamesBondFacts. Some of those got pretty funny. Here are a few of my favorites.

On To Phoenix

The 2015 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup is moving from Texas to Arizona, with the final race of the Eliminator Round coming up Sunday at Phoenix International Raceway. The eight-driver field will be trimmed to four following the Quicken Loans Race for Heroes 500. Chase participants have won this race in nine of the eleven years it’s been run as part of NASCAR’s “post-season” format. The only non-title contenders to win the fall race at P-I-R during that stretch are Kyle Busch in 2005 and Kasey Kahne in 2011.

Five of the eight drivers remaining in the Eliminator Round of the Chase have won a Cup Series race at Phoenix International Raceway: Kurt and Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards, Jeff Gordon and Kevin Harvick – who’s won the last four races run on the one-mile desert oval and five of the last six dating back to the end of the 2012 campaign – including the early-season stop there in mid-March of this year. Brad Keselowski, Joey Logano and Martin Truex Junior are still looking for their first Cup Series win at P-I-R. Keselowski finished sixth there earlier this season, with Truex seventh and Logano eighth.

So far this fall, all eight post-season races have been won by drivers on the original Chase Grid. The best finish by a non-Chase competitor is Jamie McMurray’s runner-up effort nine days ago at Martinsville Speedway … There are forty-three drivers on the preliminary entry list for Sunday’s
