Bonds Named Heart Wrestler of the Week

Oskaloosa–Outside of an injury that forced him from not competing for the individual title, Scottie Bonds (Jr., Chicago, Ill., Physical Education) could not have gotten off to a better start this year and his efforts were rewarded as he was named Heart of America Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week Monday.

Bonds won his first four matches with ease, but had to injury default in the 149-pound finals at the Grand View Open.

The junior pinned his first three opponents and then won the fourth match of the day by major decision.

Because the MCC did not sponsor wrestling during his freshman and sophomore campaigns, Bonds’ weekly award is the first of his career.

City Council Discusses Property

OSKALOOSA – City Council members are hoping to bring back life to the property located at 204 N. C St., but it may come at a price.

The lot was purchased for $59,500 in May 2013 as part of the A Avenue property acquisition program. Today Cork and Bottle liquor store, which neighbors the property, is hoping to purchase it for a much lower price.

“We bought the property, demolished the house that was there, which we found had a little nest of asbestos. Now we have the liquor store owner asking us if he can buy it and turn it into a parking lot for the business,” explained Mayor Dave Krutzfeldt. “What’s of interest to the council is that after we buying the property and demolishing the home, we’ve got a total of $74,500 in it and the offer coming in is for $30,000.”

The appraised value for the vacant lot is $35,000, but Krutzfeldt said the small size of the property might mean few future options.

“We now have to make the decision if we want to accept that price and get it back on the tax rolls as a concrete-covered parking lot or if we want to instead hold out and do something different,” he said.

If council members decide to hold onto the property, Krutzfeldt explained they may have to wait some time to find a business small enough to take advantage of the space.

“We could keep it for someone who was interested in building a business, but it would have to be a very small business by the time you figure in parking,” said the mayor. “So the highest best use for the property may be as a parking lot for the liquor store.”

During a meeting last week, council members went into a general agreement to sell the property. Before it is sold, negotiations must be made regarding the purchase price and the standards of the property.

This week, the council will come together to discuss the Local Option Sales Tax and funding the YMCA/early childhood project.

“I’m wanting council members to say for sure that we are in or we are out on the notion of the Local Option Sales Tax being used for this project,” said Krutzfeldt. “Everyone’s got their hands on [the money] — the county, city and school —and we have to recognize that it will hamper other projects in the future.”

The city currently uses the $1 million per year that would go to the project for infrastructure improvements with a special focus on roadway enhancements.

Central’s De Waard Named Head Coach For Mexico Game

PELLA — Central College defensive coordinator Don De Waard will serve as the head coach of Team Stars and Stripes for the fourth straight year in the seventh annual Tazon de Estrellas (Bowl of the Stars) football game in Baja, Mexico Saturday, Dec. 19.

The Tazon de Estrellas is an international game hosted by Global Football. The event, and its predecessor, the Aztec Bowl, have a combined 18-year history. De Waard earlier served as an assistant coach for the U.S. team in the Aztec Bowl.

Team Stars and Stripes is a 50-player squad of NCAA Division III seniors who have been nominated by head coaches. The team will face a team all-stars chosen from a national conference of Mexican private colleges.

De Waard has been on the Dutch coaching staff for 34 years and graduated from Central in 1982. He was named the Division III Assistant Coach of the Year in 2000 by the American Football Coaches Association. De Waard holds a 2-1 record as the head coach for Team Stars and Stripes, guiding the team to a 32-15 win in 2012 and a 29-7 win in 2013. He suffered a 31-17 defeat last season.

Central athletic training education program director John Roslien will join De Waard in Mexico as the Player Personnel Director for Team Stars and Stripes. He’s been involved with the game for 18 years. Roslien joined the Central staff in 1986 and has held his current title since 2003. He is also a member of the Iowa Athletic Trainers Society Hall of Honor.

Central head athletic trainer Frank Neu will be making the trip to Mexico as well, serving as the head athletic trainer for Team Stars and Stripes. This is the 15th time he has been a part of the game.

Bonds In Finals, Two Freshmen Place At Grand View

Des Moines–Headlined by its two-time All-American reaching the finals, the Statesmen wrestling team produced several winners at the season-opening Grand View OpenSaturday.

The event included two divisions–Open and Freshman–allowing for the top grapplers to face off, but yet giving mat experience to collegiate newcomers as well.

In the Open division, 149-pounder Scottie Bonds (Jr., Chicago, Ill., Physical Education) rolled through his first four matches to get to the championship match.  The junior started with three falls (two in the first period) and then added a major decision, but opted to forfeit the finals match due to injury.

Johnny Hopper (So., Basehor, Kan., Psychology) was one win shy of joining Bonds as a placer, finishing 2-2 with one fall and one major decision at 174 pounds.

Fellow 174-pounder Michael Corley (Jr., Atlanta, Ga., Sociology) pinned an opponent, while 197-pounder Chris Rodriguez (Fr., Tampa, Fla., Sociology) won once by major decision.  Damien McKinzie (So., Tampa, Fla.) had his hand raised one time in victory as well at 165 pounds.

285-pounder Matthew Cuthbert (Fr., Yucaipa, Calif., Sociology) guided the Statesmen freshmen as he took fourth with a 4-2 mark (two falls).

Austinn Goin (Fr., Belton, Mo., Exercise Science) also placed, ending the day in sixth at 157 pounds with a 3-3 record (two falls).

125-pounder Tommy Rios (Fr., Tucson, Ariz., Exercise Science) notched a pair of W’s with one fall and one major decision, while 149-pounder Fabian Rodriguez (Fr., Manassas, Va., Business Management) and heavyweight Gerardo Suarez (Fr., Salt Lake City, Utah, Industrial Technology) were both one-time winners Saturday.

Next Up: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa for its home opener Tuesday, hosting Waldorf in dual action at 7 p.m.

Jimmie Johnson Takes AAA Texas 500

Jimmie Johnson continued his mastery of Texas Motor Speedway on Sunday, winning his third straight race and fifth in his last seven starts on the Fort Worth oval. In the process, Johnson denied Brad Keselowski automatic advancement into the next round of the post-season Chase. Keselowski started from the pole and led 312 of the 334 laps run. A win would have put him into The Championship Four with Jeff Gordon at the season-ending Ford EcoBoost 400 on November 22nd.

Instead, Keselowski had to settle for second place and is now nineteen points below the fourth-place cutoff with one event remaining in the Eliminator Round – next weekend at Phoenix International Raceway. Johnson, who was eliminated from championship contention last month at Dover, made his winning pass Sunday four laps from the finish with the Number-48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet beating the 2012 champion to the checkered flag by one second. Kevin Harvick finished third with Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards completing the top five. Title contenders filled seven of the top nine spots in the final running order with Kurt Busch seventh, Martin Truex Junior eighth and Gordon ninth.

Joey Logano’s rotten post-season luck continued. He was wrecked by Matt Kenseth while leading late in last weekend’s race at Martinsville Speedway and finished thirty-seventh. Sunday, Logano cut a left-rear tire early in the race which caused major damage to the Number-22 Team Penske Ford. Repairs were made and Logano ran to the finish, though he was sixty-six laps down to Johnson and was credited with fortieth place.

He’s now sixty-three points outside the top four and facing a must-win situation at Phoenix to keep his title hopes alive.

Akway to Return to XC Nationals

Oskaloosa–Running on their home turf, the William Penn cross country teams had respectable finishes to their 2015 campaigns as they competed at the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championships Saturday.

Ochaung Akway (Sr., St. Paul, Minn., Physical Education) paced the navy and gold as he will make his second-consecutive trip to the NAIA National Championships after earning an at-large berth.  The senior, who helped the Statesmen to eighth place out of 12 teams (187 points), was 10th individually out of 92 runners on the 8K course at 27:10.9.

Akway claimed the second-to-last individual qualification and will trek to Charlotte, N.C. for the November 21 NAIA event.  He will seek to improve upon a finish of 216th from last fall.

The senior is just the third Statesmen male since 2001 to make multiple trips to nationals.

Benedictine (Kan.) took the team crown with 40 points, while Mount Mercy joins the Ravens as the league’s second automatic qualifier with a runner-up tally of 101 points.

BC’s Christopher Buhler topped all participants with a time of 26:32.0.

Garrett Heckman (So., New Virginia, Iowa, Mechanical Engineering) also had a strong showing, finishing 28th at 28:18.1, while Brenice Ndayizeye (Sr., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Computer Science) (41st, 28:57.1) and Zach Johnson (So., Decatur, Ill., Mechanical Engineering) (55th, 29:45) also crossed the line in under 30 minutes.

Amani Richardson (So., Carrollton, Va., Exercise Science) was 64th (30:38.1) to round out the team scoring, while Tyler Connelly (So., Trenton, Texas, Software Engineering) (68th, 30:54.5) and Tian Siggins (Jr., Atlantic, Iowa, Physical Education) (71st, 31:14.2) also competed for WPU.

Deja Lewis (Jr., Spring, Texas, Psychology) was William Penn’s best female harrier Saturday, helping her team to 10th place out of 14 squads.  The senior was 36th in a time of 21:00.0.

Benedictine (25 points) and Mount Mercy (76) also went 1-2 in the women’s standings and will represent the Heart at nationals.  Raven runner Katherine Dillard was at the front of the 110-person field in a 5K time of 18:36.0.

Guadalupe Gonzalez (So., Houston, Texas, Exercise Science) was next for the Statesmen, taking 55th at 21:55.1.  Destiny Galvin (Fr., Galesburg, Ill., Undecided) (75th, 23:18.9), Alexys Devlin (Jr., Davenport, Iowa, Physical Education) (82nd, 23:47.4), and Arianna Davis (So., New Sharon, Iowa, Biology) (91st, 24:31.0) completed the courseSaturday as well.

“We tested the waters in our new conference and I think, given the issues we had on both sides this fall, we held our own pretty well,” Coach Sean Gosewisch said.  “There is still room for improvement, but now we know how we stack up and what we need to do.  Our athletes ran great and represented us well.”

Jury Deliberating In Murder Trial Of Iowa Man

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — The jury in the first-degree murder trial a man accused of killing a woman in a Marion grocery store parking lot went home Friday without reaching a verdict.
Cedar Rapids television station KCRG reports that the jury is deliberating the fate of Nicholas Luerkens, who is accused of stabbing his ex-girlfriend, Lynnsey Donald, to death in April.
Police say Luerkens ambushed Donald while she was grocery shopping at the store, stabbing her more than a dozen times. During the trial, prosecutors showed store surveillance video that captured the attack.
The defense attorney argued that Luerkens was severely depressed at the time of the killing and, therefore, wasn’t fully responsible for his actions. Luerkens is seeking a conviction of the lesser offense of second-degree murder.
