Iowa Men Charged After Alleged Ginseng Harvest On State Land

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Three Iowa men face charges after state conservation officers say they unlawfully harvested ginseng root from state property.
Court records show Kyle Jones and Brent Jones, both of Slater, and Bart Bollie of Madrid, were charged Tuesday with fifth-degree theft, unlawful possession of wild ginseng root from state land and unlawful possession of young wild ginseng.
They had valid permits to harvest from private property but it’s illegal to take the root from state land. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says they harvested from state-managed land along the Des Moines River.
The men are scheduled to appear in court on Monday. Court records don’t list their attorneys.
Ginseng is endangered in some states.
Iowa DNR manages the state’s ginseng harvest with oversight by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

 

Newman, Larson Lose Points

Sprint Cup Series drivers Ryan Newman and Kyle Larson have each been penalized with the loss of fifteen championship points after their cars failed post-race laser inspection last weekend at Darlington Raceway.  The infraction is particularly costly to Newman, who’s locked in a battle with Jamie McMurray for the final spot in the Chase with just one race remaining in the regular season.  With the penalty factored in, Newman (winless this year) now trails McMurray by twenty-two points heading into Saturday night’s Federated Auto Parts 400 at Richmond International Raceway.  Richard Childress, owner of Newman’s Number-31 Chevrolet, also was docked fifteen points and crew chief Luke Lambert was fined twenty-five thousand dollars.  Likewise, Chip Ganassi – Larson’s car owner – drew a fifteen-point penalty and crew chief Chad Johnston has been fined $22,500.  Larson is already locked into the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup by virtue of his victory eleven days ago at Michigan International Speedway.  Larson and Newman finished third and eighth, respectively, in Sunday night’s Bojangles’ Southern 500 at Darlington … In addition, five Sprint Cup Series teams were issued written warnings for failing pre-race inspection numerous times.  Carl Edwards and Brad Keselowski were penalized with the loss of fifteen minutes of practice time … In the X-FINITY Series, rookie Ryan Preece’s No. 01 J-D Motorsports team was given a written warning for twice failing pre-race inspection at Darlington … In the Camping World Truck Series, the teams of Tyler Young and eventual race winner John Hunter Nemechek drew written warnings.  Truck trailing arms on their respective vehicles did not meet specifications during opening-day inspection at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park on September 2nd.

Miranda Lambert Unveils “Vice” Video

Miranda Lambert has unveiled the new video for her current single “Vice.” The video opens with a dramatic shot of a car that’s been flipped over on a highway, with pieces of broken glass scattered all around the smoking wreckage. After the camera pans in to the wreckage, Lambert can be seen in the car with her arm hanging out of the window. Dazed from the accident, Lambert soon gets out of the car and walks into town in search of her next vice. After a few drinks at a local bar, Lambert walks down the street again until a driverless black Cadillac — identical to the car from the crash — pulls up and she gets in the backseat. ·         The video was shot in Lambert’s home state of Texas in the small town of Smithville.

WPU Earns Bronze In COC Program

Oskaloosa–William Penn University continues to be a Champion of Character as the NAIA announced its 2015-2016 list of Five-Star institutions.

William Penn is one of 171 institutions that were recognized by the NAIA.  The Statesmen earned Bronze status, while Blue Mountain (Miss.) and Columbia (S.C.) led all NAIA schools with 95 points each (out of 100).  A total of 81 schools were in the Bronze category.

Nine Heart of America Athletic Conference institutions made the Five-Star list; the Heart was also named a Five-Star conference.

Depending on the institution’s point tally, it was designated for one of three groups (Gold–90-100 points; Silver–75-89 points; Bronze–60-74 points).  Points were collected in the following areas: Character Training (67{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b}), Character Recognition (17{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b}), Academic Focus (8{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b}), and Character Promotion (8{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b}).  All recipients will be recognized on the NAIA’s COC website as well as receive a special web banner for their own site and a paper certificate depicting their honor and designation.

William Penn’s athletic programs make a conscious effort to demonstrate the Champions of Character’s five core values of Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Servant Leadership, and Sportsmanship.

William Penn has excelled in the COC program, having received five Dr. LeRoy Walker Champions of Character Region VII or MCC awards (2005-2008, 2010), claiming Region VII/MCC/Heart Coach of Character honors in 2006, 2007, 2010, and 2015, and obtaining Champions of Character Team awards for women’s golf (2012, 2014) and women’s indoor track and field (2013).

Body Found In Basement Of Polk City Home, Fire Officials Say

POLK CITY, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say a body has been found in the basement of a Polk City home after a fire.

Des Moines television station KCCI says the fire was reported by an occupant of the home around 8:55 p.m. Tuesday. Fire officials say it took about 15 minutes to put out the blaze.

The cause of person’s death and what started the fire are being investigated. The victim’s name hasn’t been released.

On this day in 1987, Reba McEntire’s twelfth album, The Last One to Know, was released. It was her first album to chart on the Billboard 200.

The Last One To Know produced two number one singles with “The Last One to Know” and  “Love Will Find Its Way to You” . The album was Certified Platinum by the RIAA.

Jake Owen Returns To Chart’s Summit

Jake Owen’s single “American Country Love Song” sits atop the country charts this week, giving Jake his sixth career #1 song. Jake says this chart-topper is the culmination of a journey that started when he took his “Love Bus” Road Trip to Key West, Florida, earlier this year. Owen says, “It really was a life changing time for me. Now, to see this song go all the way to #1 this week is just a great way to end the summer. Let’s raise a glass!”

Branstad Offers History Plan, Can’t Guarantee State Funding

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Gov. Terry Branstad announced recommendations for improving the teaching of Iowa history in schools but acknowledged he can’t promise he’ll support funding the effort.

Branstad announced the history teaching recommendations Tuesday at a Des Moines elementary school before at least two dozen children, who sat on the floor between the governor and reporters.

The proposals came from the Iowa History Advisory Council, which was formed last year and issued a report this month. The recommendations include coordinating professional development for teachers and ensuring adequate state staffing to create Iowa history materials.

Despite supporting the concept, Branstad says Iowa is “facing some challenges,” and there may not be money available in the state budget to help implement the ideas.

Branstad expressed interest in a public-private partnership for funding but offered no details.

Race For The Chase Wraps Up At Richmond International Raceway

With the final weekend of the regular season now looming at Richmond International Raceway, there are three spots still open on The Chase Grid for non-race winners to fill heading into Saturday night’s Federated Auto Parts 400 Sprint Cup Series race.  Thirteen drivers have been victorious in 2016: Kyle Larson, Matt Kenseth, Kyle and Kurt Busch, Carl Edwards, Jimmie Johnson, Brad Keselowski, Joey Logano, Kevin Harvick, Martin Truex Junior, Denny Hamlin, Tony Stewart and Chris Buescher.  All are within the requisite top thirty of the standings, which currently leaves a maximum of three post-season spots available based on the point standings.  Four drivers are in the mix for those final three spots: rookie Chase Elliott, Austin Dillon, Jamie McMurray and Ryan Newman – who trails McMurray by seven points in the fight for the final “playoff” spot … Any driver who hasn’t yet won but reaches Victory Lane at Richmond would qualify for the post-season, provided that driver is among the top thirty in points, and would reduce the number of spots available based on the regular-season standings … With the post-season now right around the corner, the race for the Number-1 seed on The Chase Grid is coming down to a two-man battle between Kyle Busch (Joe Gibbs Racing) and Brad Keselowski (Team Penske).  Each has four victories in 2016.  Busch is a four-time winner in the Sprint Cup Series at R-I-R while Keselowski has one victory there.  They finished second and eleventh, respectively, in this year’s first race at Richmond on April 24th.
