April is Distracted Driving Month

-Submitted by the Iowa Department of Public Safety

Distracted driving is one of the fastest growing safety issues on the roads today. Distracted drivers aren’t just a threat to themselves: they’re a danger to everyone else on the road. With more portable technology now than ever, driver distractions have risen to unprecedented numbers. We live in a world where people expect instant, real-time information 24 hours-a-day and those desires do not stop just because people get behind the wheel of a vehicle. Not all distractions are caused by electronic devices but drivers using hand-held devices while driving are FOUR times as likely to get into crashes serious enough to injure themselves or others.

Teen Driver Cell Phone Statistics: 11 teens die every day as a result of texting while driving. According to an AAA poll, 94{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b} of teen drivers acknowledge the dangers of texting and driving, but 35{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b} admitted to doing it anyway. 21{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b} of teen drivers involved in fatal accidents were distracted by their cell phones.

To combat distracted driving, the Iowa Legislature passed a more comprehensive electronic communication devices law. Effective July 1, 2017, Iowa’s distracted driving law became a primary law meaning a law enforcement officer can stop any driver who is texting (reading, writing, or sending) or using any other portable electronic device, unless the motor vehicle is at a complete stop and off the traveled portion of the roadway.

Tito the American Bulldog Mix

Tito the American Bulldog Mix is KBOE 104.9 FM & KMZN‘s Pet of the Week!

Tito is approximately 3-years-old, and he is one of the most positive and upbeat dogs we’ve had in the station to date! Although he is so happy and seemingly carefree, we do know that being kenneled gives him anxiety, so he’ll need an understanding owner that won’t kennel him.

If you’re interested in bringing Tito home, contact Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter for more information. If you have other canine-companions, we suggest bringing them in for a “meet and greet” with Tito before you take him home with you. ????

(SALINA, Kan.) – William Penn University’s Zachary Chegwidden (So., Essex, England, Business Management) led all individuals on the links, but unfortunately the William Penn University men’s golf team could not come up with a sweep as it competed at the Kansas Wesleyan Invitational Monday and Tuesday.

The defending champions fell just four strokes shy of repeating, placing third out of nine teams with a two-day tally of 577 (289-288) at the par-70 Salina Country Club.

Park rallied from fourth place after the opening day to claim the team crown at 573 (291-282).

Chegwidden did everything in his power to lift the navy and gold to victory, posting a three-under 137. His first day mark of one-under 69 put him two strokes out of the top spot, but he pulled out the title with another red score of two-under 68 in the final 18 holes. The now two-time tournament champion this season was the only player to break par in both rounds.

Last year’s champion, Frederik Lundsgaard (Sr., Jebjerg, Denmark, History/Government) was also in the mix, placing eighth out of 63 players at 144 (74-70), while Sebastian Rulis (Sr., Helsingor, Denmark, Business Management) was in the top 10 as well in a tie for 10th at 146 (71-75).

Oscar Florez Martinez (Sr., Gignon, Spain, Business Management) tied for 19th at 150 (75-75), while Zach Swink (Sr., Burlington, Iowa, Sociology) wrapped up the varsity scoring one stroke behind him at 151 (76-75) to tie for 22nd.
