1909 – Country and western singer Moon Mullican is born in Polk County, Texas. Mullican was also a songwriter and played the piano.

1963 – Texas Ruby is killed in a trailer fire. Ruby was a part of the Curly Fox & Texas Ruby duo. The singer had fallen asleep smoking in a mobile home and died as a result of the fire that was caused. Click here to hear Blue Love by Curly Fox & Texas Ruby via YouTube.

1970 – Johnny Cash is #1 on the Country Album Charts with Hello, I’m Johnny Cash.

1980 – Conway Twitty is #1 on the Billboard Country Singles Chart with I’d Love To Lay You Down.

1997 – Reba McEntire is #1 on the Billboard Country Chart with How Was I To Know.

On this day in 1971, Charley Pride recorded his #1 single “Kiss An Angel Good Mornin”. The song was released as the first single from his twelfth studio album, Charley Pride Sings Heart Songs.

The song was later Certified Gold, and would later be covered by the likes of George Jones, Alan Jackson, and Conway Twitty respectively.

On this day in 1971, Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn teamed up for the most popular song in the country with “After The Fire Is Gone.” The song was released as the only single from the LP We Only Make Believe. “After The Fire Is Gone” was the first number one on the U.S. country chart for Lynn and Twitty as a duo.

On this day in 1981, Conway Twitty’s “Tight Fittin’ Jeans” was the most popular song in the country. The song was Conway’s 26th number one on the country charts.

On this day in 1982, Conway Twitty’s version of “Slow Hand” grabbed the top position on the Billboard Country Singles Chart. “Slow Hand” stayed on the top of the chart for two weeks, and was his last multi-week number-one song.
