Nwagbaraocha Deemed Heart ‘Player of the Week’

(OSKALOOSA, Iowa) – Vashti Nwagbaraocha (Jr., Milwaukee, Wis., Exercise Science) is thus far perfect in her outdoor track and field season and her efforts were rewarded as she was named Heart of America Athletic Conference Women’s Field Athlete of the Week Monday.

Nwagbaraocha won her first career award by not only topping the high jump field at the Central Weather Saver Invitational, but also breaking the school record and qualifying for nationals in the process.

Her jump of 5-6 broke a program mark that had stood since 2007 and also met the automatic-qualifying standard. The junior currently ranks first in the Heart and second in the entire NAIA.

The award is the second for the women’s program this year.

Grant to Fund Online Catalog of Wartburg Archives’ Audiovisual Collection

(WAVERLY, Iowa) — Wartburg College has been awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities grant in the organization’s most recent round of funding.

The two-phase grant, valued at $165,276, will allow the college to create an online catalog of the more than 28,000 audiovisual items in the Archives of Iowa Broadcasting, which is owned by and housed at the college. During the second phase of the project, the college will digitize more than 2,200 news broadcasts from KWWL-TV and add them to the catalog for online media access. The grant will run from May 2018 to April 2020.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for the archives to make its collections more accessible to the public. I am very excited to begin work on this project,” said Amy Moorman, the college’s archivist.

This is the second NEH grant the college has received in the last six months. In December, the college received a $6,000 grant to purchase equipment and supplies to stabilize select film materials prior to cataloging.

NEH Humanities Collections and Reference Resources Grants allow institutions to preserve and provide access to collections essential to scholarship, education and public programming in the humanities. In this round, 41 grants were awarded for a total of $7.5 million.

(PELLA, Iowa) – William Penn University’s Vashti Nwagbaraocha (Jr., Milwaukee, Wis., Exercise Science) was an All-American in basketball this winter and will now get a chance to do the same in track and field as she guided William Penn at the Central Weather Saver Invitational Thursday.

The Statesmen women were fifth out of six teams with 67 points, while Grand View claimed the title with 205.5 points.

Nwagbaraocha enjoyed an unforgettable season debut as she cleared a height of 5-6 to win the high jump. More importantly, though, the junior broke the school record and qualified for nationals by hitting the automatic standard. The previous program record was 5-5 and was held by Kenyani Allen in 2002 and Na Onka Mixon in 2007.

The junior is the third WPU athlete to qualify for nationals in the outdoor campaign, joining Derek Robinson (Sr., Jenks, Okla., Communications) (hammer, discus) and Guadalupe Gonzalez (Sr., Houston, Texas, Exercise Science) (marathon) as individuals who have already punched their tickets for Gulf Shores, Ala. in late May.

Shelbie Williams (So., Hedrick, Iowa, Elementary Education) joined Nwagbaraocha as an event champion, topping all shot putters at 41-2.25. She was also 10th in the discus at 104-11.

Becky Cleppe (So., St. Petersburg, Fla., Physical Education) and Elayna VanArsdale (So., Bensalem, Pa., Secondary Education) were both two-time high placers as well. Cleppe finished third in the hammer (137-11) and sixth in the javelin (98-3), while VanArsdale was fourth in the discus (124-7) and sixth in the hammer (131-1).

Alexzandrea Woudenberg (Fr., Ottumwa, Iowa) also twice finished in the top 10, ending up sixth in both the 100 (13.60 seconds) and 200-meter dashes (27.95).

The 4×100-meter relay crew claimed gold in a time of 51.40 seconds, while Asia Laudermilch (So., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Sports Management) earned the bronze in the 100 in 13.06. Heaven Buckner (Fr., St. Louis, Mo., Business Management) matched Laudermilch by taking third in the 800-meter run in 2:35.53.

Savannah Wilz (Jr., Eddyville, Iowa) finished eighth in the shot put at 32-3.5.

William Penn’s men finished fifth out of six programs with 74 points, while Central won the crown with 177 points.

Robinson headlined the men’s efforts with three top-four placings. The senior was second in the hammer (176-5), third in the discus (158-2), and fourth in the javelin (157-8).

Malik Williams (Fr., Kansas City, Mo., Industrial Technology) was also a multiple high placer in the throws, taking fourth in the discus (153-1) and 10th in the hammer (141-8), while Dajon Shaw (Sr., Highland Park, Mich., Exercise Science) performed well in the sprints. The senior finished third in the 100 in 11.41 and 10th in the 200 in 23.52.

Malik Brown (Sr., Long Beach, Calif., Psychology), in sixth (11.60), and Michael Hubbard (Jr., Gary, Ind., Exercise Science), in 10th (11.75), were in the 100’s top 10 as well.

William Penn’s 4×1 team claimed silver in 43.29 seconds, while Mofiyinfoluwa Alade (Fr., Hoffman Estates, Ill.) ended up third in the high jump at 6-4.75.

(8th, 17.37) also had solid days.

Seth Davis (So., Farmerville, Texas) was the best hurdler, though, by taking third in the 400-meter event in a time of 59.84 seconds.

Oskaloosa Optimist Flag Project Continues to Grow

(OSKALOOSA, Iowa) – In 2012, the Optimist Club of Oskaloosa began a project of placing flags in city resident’s yard as part of a club project to promote patriotism and help fund the club’s projects. There were 65 flags the first year and participation has grown each year since.

The Optimist Club kicked off its 2018 campaign this past week and hopes the project continues to grow.

“The project has been wonderful for our city and club,” says RD Keep, secretary-treasurer of the club. “We have been able to support many community activities such as events at the George Daily Auditorium, Oskaloosa Middle School PBIS program, public library programs and movies for kids. We have been able to partner with the Oskaloosa Shooting Team to assist them with their activities and in return they help us place the flags.”

As the project grows, so does the list of things it helps to contribute to.

“It is all about promoting patriotism in our town and allowing us to give back to our community,” adds Katelynn Nimtz, Optimist Club president. “We are looking at a large project in conjunction with the new Mahaska County Environmental Learning Center.”

Project details are simple. For an annual fee, the Optimists will place a tube that juts up just above the ground (but easily mowed over) in the public right-of-way approximately four feet from the curb or edge of the road. On five holidays, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day and Veteran’s Day, the flags go up at sunup and are taken down just before dusk.

“We use a cotton cloth flag attached to a 10-foot standard that is inserted into the tube,” explains Keep. “It is most impressive when several flags are fluttering in the breeze in a neighborhood. Edmundson Drive, 15th Avenue West and Westfield Drive have nearly 40 flags each time. We also have the Elmhurst Housing development with all participants. It is quite a sight to see.”

The Optimists will be at Penn Central Mall this Sunday during the “Experience Mahaska” event and residents may renew or sign up at the event between 1–4 PM.

Keep says that anyone interested in the placing a flag in their yard could contact him at 641-673-0123 to learn more.

“We hope more residents will join us this year,” he concludes. “We live in a great country and should celebrate our freedom – and what better way than to display a flag?”
