Garth Brooks Accomplishes Triple Chart Feat

Garth Brooks has become the first artist in 24 years to have three albums in the Top 5 of Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart at the same time. Brooks accomplished this feat with his holiday duets album, Christmas Together, notching the #2 spot, his Wal-Mart-exclusive Christmas Together/Gunslinger boxed set sitting at #3  and his studio project, Gunslinger, coming in fourth place.

·       According to Billboard, the last person to accomplish this feat was none other than Garth himself, who tripled up on the chart in December of 1992 with his albums The Chase (#1), Beyond the Season (#3) and No Fences (#4).

State Argues Against Lawsuit Over Officers’ Ticketing Power

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The state of Iowa says it would damage public safety if the state were forced to refund traffic fines and remove wrongful convictions from motorists’ records.

The state made those assertions in documents made public Wednesday as it asked the Polk County District Court to reject an effort to certify as a class action a lawsuit against the state. The lawsuit cites a judge’s October ruling that the Iowa Transportation Department didn’t have authority to issue a speeding ticket to a 16-year-old driver.

The state is arguing in part that district court decisions aren’t binding to other district courts.

The lawsuit seeks an order barring the department’s officers from issuing tickets. A 1990 Iowa attorney general opinion said the officers’ authority is limited to drunken driving and commercial vehicle regulations.

Granger Smith took to his socials yesterday morning (12/6) to update fans on his condition after a serious fall during a recent show in New Jersey left him with two broken ribs and a punctured and partially collapsed lung. In a picture posted on Instagram, Granger gave the thumbs as he rested on a couch with his head propped up by pillows.

·         Granger was admitted to a Level 1 Trauma Center in New Brunswick, New Jersey, following his injury, but has since flown home to Texas to rest and recover with his family.

·         The remainder of Smith’s 2016 tour has been canceled, but he fully intends to make up those missed dates for fans.

·         Granger said in a message to his fans, “I’ve had so many emails and tweets. It’s pretty amazing that so many people have reached out from across the country. I feel so blessed to have more than just support for my music from fans and radio. It’s deeply humbling to have fans that personally care so much.”

January Trial Set For Man Charged In 2 Mason City Slayings

MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) — A January trial has been scheduled for a man accused of killing two people and trying to kill another in Mason City.

Court documents say 30-year-old Peter Veal, of Lake Mills, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. His trial is set to begin Jan. 24.

Officers sent to a home to check on a shooting report around 2:30 a.m. Nov. 17 found the bodies of 37-year-old Caleb Christensen and 54-year-old Melinda Kavars. Autopsies showed Christensen died from several “sharp-force” injuries and Kavars died from a gunshot wound to her neck and chest.

Court documents do not identity the person who Veal is accused of trying to kill.

Drinking Water Advisory

Wapello Rural Water Association is recommending to boil the water before using for drinking or to use an alternative source.

A water main break occurred on 190th Stree in Keota, Iowa resulting in a water boil advisory being issued for the cities of Harper, South English, Kinross, rural Keota and surrounding areas that experienced a water outage on the morning of December 16th, 2016.

Wapello Rural Water had a problem in the distribution system and the system lost pressure at approximately 11:20 am on December 6th. Due to the potential for bacterial contamination, it is being recommended that the water be boiled before using for drinking or cooking or that an alternative source be used.

IT IS RECOMMENDED NOT TO DRINK THE WATER WITHOUT BOILING IT FIRST. Bring all water to a boil, let it boil for one minute, and let it cool before using, or use bottled water. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, and food preparation until further notice. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water.

For more information, please contact 641-682-8351. For general guidelines on ways to lessen the risk of infection by microbes, call 1-800-426-4791.

The system is working with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to resolve this situation.

GOP-Majority Senate Eliminates Economic Growth Committee

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Republican-controlled Iowa Senate has eliminated a committee that focused on economic growth, and the decision has sparked criticism from the new minority party.

Caleb Hunter, a spokesman for Senate Republicans, released an email Monday that says the Senate Economic Growth Committee will no longer exist when the Iowa Legislature returns in January. Hunter says such a committee is redundant and unnecessary.

Committees in both chambers decide whether proposed bills can advance into possible laws. The Republican-majority House plans to continue with its separate economic growth committee.

Sen. Rob Hogg of Cedar Rapids, the Senate Democratic minority leader, says the committee monitored the economic development efforts of state agencies. He asked Republicans to reconsider their decision.

Hunter says Senate Republicans are following through on reducing the size of state government.

Knowles Buries Seven Trifectas In 100-71 Win

Oskaloosa–Charles Knowles (Sr., Chicago, Ill., Physical Education) singed the nylon from deep Saturday as he helped the William Penn men’s basketball team top Evangel 100-71 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play.

The third-ranked Statesmen (10-1, 6-1 Heart) cruised to the win by outshooting the Crusaders 50.0{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b}-41.4{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b}, including a 46.4{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b} mark from behind the arc.  The hosts were equally impressive from the line, going 23-for-27 for an 85.2{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b} clip.

William Penn, which has now won a season-high six in a row, allowed Evangel (1-7, 1-6 Heart) to post the first two points of the night, but it was all WPU from there.  The victors led 47-29 at the half and were never threatened in the second period.  Paced by a career-high 27 points from Knowles, the navy and gold remain at the top of the league standings.

Knowles finished 8-for-10 from the field, headlined by knocking down seven of his nine three-pointers.  The senior was also a perfect 4-for-4 at the charity stripe.

Lionel Ellison (Sr., New Orleans, La., Kinesiology) missed a double-double by just one assist, finishing with 16 points and nine ‘dimes’, while double-double machine Torren Jones (Sr., Chandler, Ariz., Sociology) did not fall short of that feat with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Brandon Trotter (Jr., Louisville, Ky., Kinesiology) was next on the scoring list with nine points, while Corbin Medley (Jr., Rogersville, Mo., General Accounting) and Rufus Williams (Sr., Tuscaloosa, Ala., Physical Education) each accounted for seven points.  Nick Jeffries (Jr., Altoona, Iowa, Exercise Science) ended the win with five points.

William Penn crushed Evangel on the boards, 41-24, and was also four better in the turnover column, 13-17, as Jones recorded a pair of thefts.

“This was a great team win for us as everyone got to play and contribute,” Associate Head Coach Blake Sandquist said.  “Chuck (Charles Knowles) was exceptional with his three-point shooting and Lionel was fantastic on both ends, including holding their best player scoreless.”

Next Up:
William Penn closes out its pre-holiday break slate next Saturday by traveling to Canton, Mo. to face Culver-Stockton in Heart play at 4 p.m.
