Mahaska County Supervisors Approve Bids for County Farm

The Mahaska County Board of Supervisors met for a special session on Monday morning and the main objective was to accept bids for the land previously occupied by the Country Life Health Care facility west of Oskaloosa.

The parcel of farm land around the building was bid on by Leroy and Brandon Groenendyk and Dan Niewsma for $3,878 per acre. This was the highest bid sent to the Supervisors and all other bidders decided against increasing their bid. The land has 314 acres to use for farming.

The parcel of land that includes the building was bid on by Steve and Crystal Phillips, who had their bid of $600 accepted by the Supervisors. Supervisor Mike VanderMolen wanted to know what the building would be used for, and the Phillips’ said they would use it to increase their ability to foster children. This parcel includes 5.56 acres.

It was also determined that Mahaska County Conservation would take care of mowing the land before the new owners close their deals.

Also in the meeting, the Board approved the signature for the business agreement with AmeriHealth, which was discussed at last week’s meeting.

The next meeting of the Mahaska County Board of Supervisors is slated for next Monday, April 18, at the Mahaska County Courthouse in Oskaloosa. The meeting will be called to order at 9 AM.

Kyle Busch takes the Duck Commander 500

Kyle Busch stormed past race leader Martin Truex Junior thirty-three laps from the finish and kept his Number-18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota in front the rest of the way to claim his second victory of the season on Saturday night at Texas Motor Speedway. Busch led only thirty-four laps, but that included the ones that counted most as he beat runner-up Dale Earnhardt Junior to the checkered flag by four seconds. Joey Logano finished third with Jimmie Johnson and Hendrick Motorsports rookie Chase Elliott completing the top five.

Truex faded to sixth after his crew elected to bypass a final pit stop for fresh tires while other contenders – Busch included – got new rubber. Truex started third and led a race-high 141 laps in his failed bid for victory Number-1 of 2016. Carl Edwards started from the pole and was strong throughout the first half of the race, leading a total of 124 laps en route to a seventh-place finish.

With the win, Busch assures himself of a spot in this year’s Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup with an opportunity to defend his 2015 championship. It was the second straight weekend sweep for Busch, who won Friday night’s X-FINITY Series race on the Fort Worth oval after claiming Sprint Cup and Camping World Truck Series victories at Martinsville Speedway one weekend earlier. Saturday’s win lifted Busch from third to first in the Cup Series standings, now six points ahead of Johnson and seven up on Kevin Harvick.

Busch’s victory gave Toyota its first Sprint Cup win at T-M-S since he was victorious in this event in 2013 … The race included seventeen lead changes among eight drivers. There were seven cautions for forty-one laps, including a thirteen-car accident along the backstretch less than forty laps from the finish.

Five Runs To Start Nightcap Lift WPU To Split With Mount Mercy

Cedar Rapids–The Statesmen softball team only scored in three innings Thursday night, but one of those frames was a big one as William Penn split a non-conference doubleheader with Mount Mercy.

The Statesmen (13-18) lost the opener 7-2, but won the second game 6-4.

The Mustangs (11-17) got off to a much better start than the visitors, leading 5-0 entering the sixth inning of the first contest.

Kayla Browning (Jr. Spring Valley, Calif., Biology) and Gabrielle Braniff (Jr., Olympia, Wash., General Accounting) both touched home plate to narrow the deficit to three runs in the top half, but despite matching MMU with nine hits, William Penn could not come any closer.

In a game that featured eight errors (three by WPU), Braniff led the navy and gold with a 3-for-3 effort.  Browning, Tabitha Scott (Fr., Placentia, Calif., Psychology), andChyanne Koko (So., Waianae, Hawaii, Business Management) all finished 2-for-4 as well.  William Penn had its chances, but stranded runners in scoring position five times.

Koko was saddled with the loss as she struck out one batter and walked another in a complete-game performance.  Only five of the runs she allowed were earned.

The Statesmen exorcized some of their first-game demons with an impressive opening frame in the nightcap.  Kodee Johnson (Jr., Stockton, Calif., General Mathematics) and Scott led off with back-to-back doubles and four other players, including Siarra Velasquez (Sr., Carter Lake, Iowa, Biology) with another two-bagger, also managed a base knock in the squad’s five-run effort.

The Mustangs closed to within two runs late at 5-3, but the visiting crew added an insurance run in the seventh when Johnson scored for the second time on one of MMU’s four fielding mistakes.

Johnson was 3-for-4, while Scott managed to go 2-for-2.  Both sides again had nine hits in the latter matchup.

Scott hurled four strong innings for the win, permitting one run (earned) on five hits with a pair of strikeouts.  Elizabeth Whitaker (Jr., Azalea, Ore., Exercise Science) finished it off with a three-inning save that included four strikeouts (one walk).

Next Up: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa Saturday to host Baker in a Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
