NHTSA And Oskaloosa Police Declare Distracted Driving A Major Concern

The Nation Highway Traffic safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Oskaloosa Police Department has declared distracted driving to be a major concern regarding traffic safety.  Distracted driving is any activity that takes a person’s attention away from the task of driving.  Distractions include, but are not limited to: texting, using a cell phone, eating/drinking, talking to a passenger, grooming, reading (including maps), using a gps, watching a video, or adjusting your radio or mp3 player.  Any non-driving activity you engage in is a potential distraction and increases your risk of crashing.
Our youngest and most inexperienced drivers are most at risk when it comes to distracted driving, with 16{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b} of all distracted driving crashes involving drivers under 20.  But they are not alone; at any given moment, during daylight hours, over 800,000 vehicles are being driven by someone using a hand-held cell phone.
Talking on a cell phone while driving requires the brain to multitask – a process it cannot do safely while driving.  While growing number of drivers are turning to hands-free devices, studies show hands-free devices provide minimal safety benefit.  The area of the brain responsible for processing moving visual information – a vital part of driving – has 37{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b} less capacity to gather and process critical driving data and instead focuses on the cell phone conversation.
Texting has increasingly become the way many people communicate.  American teens send and receive an average of 3,300 text messages per month or more than 6 texts every hour they are awake.  Sending text or e-mail messages while driving is extremely dangerous, as it draws a driver’s eyes, mind and hands away from the road.    Sending or reading a text takes your eyes off of the road for approximately 4.6 seconds.  At 55 mph, that’s like driving the length of an entire football field, blindfolded.  A texting driver is 23 times more likely to be involved in a crash than a non-texting driver.
Iowa’s primary electronic communications device law prohibits all novice drivers (up to age 18) from using any hand-held electronic communication or entertainment device while driving.  A secondary law prohibits all drivers from texting while driving.
The Oskaloosa Police Department would like to remind drivers the  next time you’re pressed for time and it seems like multitasking  in the car is no big deal, remember one out of every four traffic crashes is caused by drivers talking on a cell phone or sending text messages.  Don’t risk your life.  Put down the phone and drive.

Oskaloosa Girls’ Soccer Moves to 4-0, Yet To Allow Goal

The Oskaloosa Girls’ Soccer team was back in action last night against Pella Christian, as heard on 99.5 FM/740 AM KMZN andradiokmzn.com.  The Varsity team was looking to continue their winning ways and set the best start in school history against the Eagles.

Although the Indians controlled most of the first half, there were very few scoring opportunities for the Indians and the score was tied 0-0 at half.  With the breeze at their back and renewed sense of urgency, the Indians quickly got on the board with a finish by junior Kamryn Beers just 2 minutes into the 2nd half.  Beers put away a cross from junior Leah VanMaanen.  The Indians were able to generate more opportunities in the 2nd half  and this was the case when senior Jackie Reif, took the ball herself and put away a far post shot in the 58th minute.  Oskaloosa would tack on one more insurance goal from senior Taylor Seaton, who put away a pass from freshman Kirby Nelson.

The final whistle would blow with a 3-0 victory in favor of the Indians moving their record to 4-0.  Along with the best start in school history, the defense would record their 4th shutout of the season.

The team was led in shots by freshman Aleeya Cheney with 5 shots (none on goal) followed by VanMaanen with 4 shots (none on goal), Seaton with 3 shots (1 on goal), junior Ashley Brockman with 2 shots (1 on goal), Reif with 1 shot (1 on goal), Beers with 1 shot (1 on goal), Nelson with 1 shot (none of goal) and freshman Emily Lunsford with 1 shot (none on goal).

Tonight, we controlled most of the game, but struggled offensively in getting anything going,” said Head Coach Jodi Steinlage. “Although we had a total of 19 shots, we only had 3 on goal which were all goals, but we need to do a better job of taking advantage of the offensive scoring opportunities when we have them.”

“We are very excited to record our 4th victory and 4th shutout of the season,” Steinlage continued. “The last couple of games we haven’t played our best games, but we will take the victories.  The girls are excited to be 4-0, but know that we have a long way to go if we want to accomplish the different goals we have set for ourselves. We are continuing to grow in a new system and as coaches we expected to have speed bumps, but we couldn’t be more proud of the girls and the effort they are giving us.  We will work hard the rest of the week to prepare for next week against another LHC foe in Grinnell.  The Indians look to move to 5-0 and beat the Tigers for the first time in school history. We would also like to thank the fans who came out to support us and loved seeing a good crowd out there cheering the girls on.”

The next game for the Oskaloosa Girls’ Soccer team will be at the Lacey Complex next Tuesday against #13 Grinnell with Varsity first at 5:30 with JV to follow.

Store Closing Announced

Gamestop has announced it will close for good in Oskaloosa at the end of this month. A sign posted on the door of the shop explains that Gamestop is simply moving to Ottumwa, however there is already a Gamestop established at that location. It is unclear at this time what will replace the video game store after it closes. Sorry, gamers — employees of the store said there will be no “going out of business” sales as their products will be rerouted to different outlets.

Gamestop Headquarters was unable to be reached for comment at the time of the publication.
