Mahaska Rural Water System Annual Meeting

The 43rd Annual Meeting of the members of Mahaska Rural Water System, Inc. will be held Tuesday, March 20 at the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa at 7:30 PM. The agenda will include the election of directors, financial report, manager’s report and other routine business. All members are invited and encouraged to attend.

Pancakes Taste Better Than Clay Targets

Oskaloosa Public Library Board Meeting

The Oskaloosa Public Library Board of Trustees will hold a regular meeting on Monday, February 26, 2018 at 4:00 PM. Mahaska County Wind Farm Now Complete

(MAHASKA COUNTY, Iowa) — MidAmerican Energy Company has announced that it has completed two new wind farms in Iowa that add 338 megawatts of wind generation capacity, with one of those farms located in Mahaska County.

According to a news release sent by MidAmerican, the Beaver Creek Wind Farm in Boone and Greene Counties as well as the Prairie Wind Farm in Mahaska County are now in operation. The 168-megawatt Prairie Wind Farm began generating electricity in the Fall 2017, with the final four megawatts put into service Jan. 2018.

Construction started in the spring of 2017, following approval by the Iowa Utilities Board in 2016.

“We’re committed to providing reliable service and outstanding value to our customers, and wind energy accomplishes both,” says Mike Fehr, vice president of resource development at MidAmerican Energy. “Wind energy is good for our customers, and it’s an abundant, renewable resource that also energizes the economy.”

The release states that MidAmerican Energy anticipates that renewable generation will equate to more than 90{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b} of its customers’ annual retail electricity usage by 2020.

Eggs and Issues Lined Up for Saturday

(OSKALOOSA, Iowa) – Another session of Eggs & Issues, organized by the Oskaloosa Area Chamber and Development Group, will be held on Saturday, Feb. 24 from 8:30-9:30 AM at Smokey Row in Oskaloosa. Attendees will be able to listen to updates from Iowa State Representative Guy Vander Linden, Representative Larry Sheets, and Iowa Senator Ken Rozenboom. After the guests give their updates, attendees will then be able to ask questions for a limited amount of time.

According to a news release sent by OACDG, this will be the last time Reps. Sheets and Vander Linden, as well as Sen. Rozenboom participate as the featured guests this season. The setting is informal and encourages those attending to personally meet and speak to their elected representatives.

This session will be moderated by Oskaloosa Mayor David Krutzfeldt.

“Thank you to George Daily Auditorium staff for volunteering to assist with the sound system,” reads the news release. “[And the] Oskaloosa School System for the use of their cordless microphones, Smokey [R]ow for the use of their coffee house, MidWestOne Bank for the free coffee, all of our media partners, and YOU, our community[,] for coming out and supporting this event.”

‘Lyrical Iowa’ Deadline Approaching

(MAHASKA COUNTY, Iowa)–The deadline for entering Iowa Poetry Association’s (IPA) 73rd Annual “Lyrical Iowa” is fast approaching, with a due date of Wednesday, Feb. 28.Lyrical Iowa” is an annual anthology comprised of poems written by Iowa writers of all ages. Each year, top-ranking poems are awarded cash prizes in each category and age-level while many are showcased in the perfect-bound book. The 2018 edition will be printed and made available for public purchase later this year.

“Entries for the 2017 book came from 68 of Iowa’s 99 counties,” says Pam Blomgren, IPA’s representative for Mahaska County. “There were 341 poems chosen for publication from 2,026 entries.”

Mahaska County had two individuals published in last year’s book: Blomgren herself as well as Keegan Joel Vandevender, a student at William Penn University.

Blomgren encourages any Mahaska County resident who writes to consider entering this year’s contest. She said there are no entry fees, and the contest is open to anyone with an Iowa residence. Students whose homes are in Iowa but are studying outside the state are eligible to enter as are out-of-state students attending Iowa schools. As with any writing contest, rules and guidelines must be strictly adhered to. Complete information is available on Iowa Poetry’s website, www.iowapoetry.com.

Up to five poems can be entered and each poem must be 20 lines or less. Cash prizes and Honorable Mentions will be awarded in each category: Adult general, sonnet, national/world events, haiku, poems for children, humorous verse; College, Division; High School Division; Grade School Division (K-8). There are additional student and undergraduate opportunities as well. With the exception of the adult division, which has a preferred email submission method, all poems must be mailed and postmarked by February 28. Each division has their own mailing address so it’s important for those submitting poems go to IPA’s web site to make sure submissions are sent to the correct address.

Snow Emergency Declared Around Region

  • Oskaloosa Senior Center is closed today.
  • The City of Oskaloosa has declared a Snow Ordinance to take effect at 9:00 PM on Friday, Feb. 9, 2018 until 6:00 AM on Sunday, Feb. 11, 2018. Parking on all City streets is prohibited to allow City crews to plow. When this notice becomes effective, the police department will be issuing parking tickets and/or towing vehicles left on the street at the owner’s expense. As a reminder, all property owners are responsible for clearing the sidewalks along their property after the snow has stopped.
  • The City of Ottumwa‘s Snow Emergency Ordinance will be placed into effect at 7 PM on Friday, February 9. Residents are reminded that while the Snow Emergency is declared, no parking is allowed on streets designated as “Snow Routes” until the emergency is lifted. Snow Routes are marked with square blue signs showing a white snowflake.
  • The Knoxville Snow Ordinance is in effect. Parking is prohibited on ALL City streets while in effect. It will remain in effect until the storm ends AND the streets are plowed curb to curb. Violators may be cited and towed.
  • Sigourney has declared a snow emergency effective at 8:00 PM on Friday, Feb. 9 until 6:00 AM on Sunday, Feb. 11.
