State Reps Take Stage Saturday for ‘Eggs & Issues’

(Oskaloosa, Iowa) – Eggs and Issues will again take the spotlight at Smokey Row in Oskaloosa this weekend on Saturday, Feb. 10. The legislative forum, which will feature Iowa Senator Ken Rozenboom, House Representative Guy VanderLinden, and House Representative Larry Sheets, will go from 8:30-9:30 AM.

A news release from the Oskaloosa Area Chamber & Development Group encourages people to attend. “Be sure to join us as we hear from our State Representatives,” it reads. “Join your friends and neighbors to thank these gentlemen for their service and to hear about all the great things that are going on with our State government.”

As with past Eggs & Issues forums, the setting is informal and encourages those attending to personally meet and speak to their elected representatives. MidWestOne Bank will provide complimentary coffee and Aaron Riggs will return for a new season as moderator.

Fremont Lions Present ‘How the Other Half Dies’

(Fremont, Iowa) – There are lemon car laws but do those laws cover when a person finds a dead body in the trunk the day after they bring the car home? That is only one of the confusing questions encountered by Sybil Chasteen (Jeanene Calhoun) during this year’s Fremont Lions Club production of “How the Other Half Dies.”

The 35th show produced by the Lions Club will take the stage Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 10, 11 and 12. Show times Friday and Saturday are 7 PM with a 2 PM Sunday matinee. The show will be held at the Fremont School stage with a pre-show meal served (free will donation).

The play, written by Eddie McPherson, is a murder-mystery that spirals out of control with comedy and will leave the audience in stitches. For information on getting tickets in advance, contact Bill Ward (641-295-6060) or Jeanene Calhoun (641-660-7282). Otherwise, tickets will be available at the door.

Scammers Target Oskaloosa Residents

MidAmerican Energy received several reports of scammers targeting Oskaloosa customers over the phone today (Jan. 26). Anyone can be a target for a scammer, at any time of year, so it’s important to know exactly what to do to protect yourself.

Scammers typically call customers and demand immediate payment, often within minutes. They may ask you to pay with a prepaid (Green Dot) debit card. This is a scam. If you’re behind on your bill, you’ll receive several notifications; disconnection is a last resort, not a first step in the process. MidAmerican Energy accepts many different forms of payment, so a specific payment method is never required.

If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and call local police and your energy provider to report the scam and check the status of your account. Customers can check their balance online using My Account at www.midamericanenergy.com or by calling MidAmerican Energy at 888-427-5632, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Here are some steps you can follow to stay safe from scammers:

  • Never give out personal information such as credit card or account numbers. Utilities will not ask for this information over the phone.
  • Beware of any caller who asks you to pay with a prepaid debit card or gift card. MidAmerican Energy does not accept this type of payment.
  • Ask for proper identification from anyone who approaches you claiming to be from a service provider. Call the service provider directly to verify the purpose for the visit. Use the number published on your monthly bill or the company’s website.

For more information, visit www.midamericanenergy.com/scams. The Consumer Protection Division of the Iowa Attorney General’s office has also set up a hotline with more information on the scam at 515-725-5387.
