Country Legends Announce ‘Urban Cowboy Reunion Tour’

(NASHVILLE, Tenn) – Country legends Johnny Lee and Mickey Gilleyhave joined forces to co-headline the “Urban Cowboy Reunion Tour,” which kicked off January 26. The two friends have reunited for a series of live concert dates throughout 2018. The tour kicked off in Stafford, Texas, and will visit cities all across the country, including Nevada, Oklahoma, Minnesota, Louisiana and Pennsylvania. After working together for over 50 years, Gilley and Lee have a friendship and stage chemistry that goes unmatched. The duo can be seen throughout the year in their hometown of Branson, Mo., at Mickey Gilley’s Shanghai Theater.

The tour reunites two of the stars of the 1980 iconic “Urban Cowboy” film. The movie depicts a young man, played by John Travolta, who learns about life and love in a Houston bar called “Gilley’s,” which was a real-life honky-tonk owned and operated by Gilley himself and still exists today in multiple cities. This country classic played an integral role in the careers of both Mickey Gilley and Johnny Lee, among other artists, catapulting them and their music into the spotlight.

“I’m really, really happy about going out on the road with my good friend Mickey Gilley and doing the ‘Urban Cowboy Reunion Tour’,” says Lee. “We go back a long time, and it is fun sharing stories and music with the fans. This tour is long overdue, and it is gonna be like old times for you with my good friend- and to me that is a good thing.”

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to tour once again with my good friend. The Urban Cowboy craze kept my career alive for all of these years, and every night when I go to bed, I thank John Travolta for my amazing career. At 81, I am still rockin,” says Gilley.

Dutch Softball Hangs on for Victory over BVU

Getting the response it needed after a wrenching defeat, the Central College softball team scratched out a doubleheader split at Buena Vista University Thursday.

The No. 23-rated Dutch (19-7 overall, 6-2 Iowa Conference) tumbled 5-4 in a back-and-forth nine-inning opener before hanging on for a 6-4 victory in the second game.

Central travels to Decorah Tuesday to tackle No. 5-rated Luther College.

Statesmen Baseball Drops Two Against MMU

(CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa)—The Statesmen baseball team (11-22, 4-14 Heart) hit the road to play a doubleheader and open a four game series against the Mount Mercy Mustangs (19-19-1, 10-9-1 Heart) in Heart of America Conference action on Thursday.

William Penn would fall short of their goal as they would drop the first two games of the series by the scores of 10-3 and 5-1.

WPU 3, MMU 10

The Statesmen offense would get going early as they would scratch in the first inning when Seth Reisbeck (Jr., Meridian, Idaho, History/Government) singled to center field, scoring Isaiah Almanza (Jr., Deming, N.M., Exercise Science). Almanza led off the game with a single to center field.

WPU would add 2 more runs in the third inning.

D.J. Milam (Sr., Lancaster, Calif., Business Management) started for William Penn but unfortunately did not have his best stuff. The senior was only able to get through 1 inning while surrendering 5 earned runs. Wilson Lorenzo (So., Fort Myers, Fla., Computer Science) would highlight the pitching performances by throwing an inning while only surrendering a hit.

Three Statesmen would finish with multi-hit performances including a 3-hit game by Reisbeck.

WPU 1, MMU 5

Augie Voight (Jr., Waukegan, Ill., Secondary Education) would take the mound for William Penn in game two and went a respectable 6 innings while surrendering 4 earned runs and striking out 6.

The Statesmen bats were stifled as they were only able to push across one run. William Penn would outhit the Mustangs 8-3 but were edged in the error column 2-0.

The game was tied 1-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth, but the Mustang bats were able to take advantage of a couple of walks and an error to explode for big 5 run inning.

Matt Rhodes (Fr., Des Moines, Iowa, Business Management) highlighted the Statesmen bats in game two going 2-3 with a run scored.

Next Up: William Penn will conclude the series with Mount Mercy in Cedar Rapids on Friday starting at 11 a.m.

ACM Awards Set for Sunday

The 53^rd Annual ACM Awards are set for Sunday in Las Vegas, and it’s certainly going to be quite a show.

The show’s landed a star-studded list of performers including, Jason Aldean, Kelsea Ballerini, Dierks Bentley, Luke Bryan, Kenny Chesney, Dan + Shay, Lady Antebellum, Miranda Lambert, Little Big Town, Midland, Maren Morris, Thomas Rhett, Darius Rucker, Carrie Underwood, Brett Young and Chris Young.

The show will also have some exciting collaborations, including Florida Georgia Line and Bebe Rexha, performing their hit “Meant To Be,” Kane Brown and Lauren Alaina, performing their hit “What Ifs,” and Keith Urban and Julia Michaels, who’ll perform Keith’s latest single “Coming Home.”

There will also be an “ACM Flashbacks” segment, celebrating hit songs from 1993, with Toby Keith and Blake Shelton, who’ll perform, Toby’s “Should’ve Been A Cowboy,” Alan Jackson and Jon Pardi, who’ll perform Alan’s “Chattahoochee,” and host Reba McEntire and Kelly Clarkson, who’ll perform Reba’s “Does He Love You.”

Presenters for this year’s show include: David Boreanaz, Drew Brees, AJ Buckley, Cam, Sam Elliot, Eve, Ashton Kutcher, Dustin Lynch, Nancy O’Dell, Rebecca Romijn, Max Thieriot and Lindsey Vonn.

Chris Stapleton leads the pack of this year’s nominees with eight nods in five categories, including the night’s big award, Entertainer of the Year, the first time he’s been recognized in that category. Other multiple nominees include Thomas Rhett with six, Keith Urban with five, including his eighth Entertainer of the Year nod, and Miranda Lambert and Maren Morris each nabbing four.

This year’s Entertainer of the Year category is decidedly male, with Chris and Keith set to go up against last year’s winner, Jason Aldean, as well as Garth Brooks, and Luke Bryan.

The 53^rd Annual ACM Awards, hosted by Reba McEntire, airs on CBS at 8 pm, live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. This will be Reba’s 15^th time hosting, and her first time since 2012.

WPU Department of Fine Arts to Present an ‘Evening of Great TV’

(OSKALOOSA, Iowa) – Do you remember the Golden Age of Television? Are you a fan of MeTV? Does the music of film and television stir vivid memories of happy times in your mind?

Well, you’re in luck! On Tuesday, April 24 and Wednesday, April 25, the William Penn University Jazz Ensemble and William Penn Singers are taking a trip back in time. Theme songs, commercial jingles, and other sounds from classic television will be featured in concert. Included in the performance will be favorite themes like Hawaii Five-O, The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, Family Guy, Get Smart, Sanford and Son, The Pink Panther, Shaft, and more.

Music from commercials for BMW, Delta Airlines, State Farm, and even Chips Ahoy will be part of the mix.

Music Professor Scott Cressley said, “The jazz ensemble and choir have had a great time preparing this nostalgic program which we are sure the audience will thoroughly enjoy.”

The show begins each evening at 7:00 PM in the Musco Technology Center on the Oskaloosa campus of William Penn University. Admission is free and open to the public.

Ottumwa Regional Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center Honored with Awards

(Ottumwa, Iowa) – Ottumwa Regional Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center has received the distinguished Center of the Year Award from Healogics, Inc. Nearly 700 Centers had the opportunity to qualify for the award and only 7 centers received it. In order to qualify for this award, stringent quality measure must be met, such as high healing outcomes, low days to heal and excellent patient satisfaction scores.

Ottumwa Regional Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center was also awarded the President’s Circle Robert A. Warriner III, M.D. Center of Excellence Award for outstanding performance. This Center has achieved patient satisfaction rates higher than 92 percent and a healing rate of at least 91 percent in less than 30 median days to heal, for a minimum of two consecutive years. The Center was awarded this prestigious honor by Healogics, the nation’s largest provider of advanced wound care services. Out of 340 eligible Centers, 26 were honored with this award nationwide. This award is named for Dr. Robert A. Warriner III, a pioneer in wound care and the former Chief Medical Officer for Healogics.

“It is an honor to be recognized for our clinic’s success. I am grateful to the wound clinic staff for their hard work and commitment. They have perfected the skills needed to help patients heal and are dedicated to delivering outstanding results,” said Dr. Jessica Lewis, the Ottumwa Regional Wound Care Medical Director. “Our award-winning care would not be possible without the support of local physicians, nurses, hospital staff, and administrators. Alley Gets a Spring Cleaning to Jump Start the Season

(OSKALOOSA, Iowa) – Even with cool temperatures, it was just “spring enough” to give The Alley a good spring cleaning Tuesday, April 10. Spring cleaning for The Alley, located in downtown Oskaloosa just off the square between Smokey Row and Bridal Dreams, meant out with the winter greenery, in with the tables, umbrellas and chairs, anticipating another fun filled season.

Many helping hands pitched in for the effort from the Central College Student Volunteers, the Oskaloosa Fire Department, the Oskaloosa Street Department, Alley-friend Harold, Oskaloosa Main Street, and the Alley KADTS. Jaarsma Bakery also contributed tasty goods for the occasion, as well.

May flowers will soon follow the clean up, so visitors and residents alike are urged to stop by The Alley throughout the season and have some lunch or book a party. On Thursdays, beginning May 31 through August 2, live music and wine will be had at 6:00 PM and visitors can also cross the street to the park in the square at 8:00 PM on Thursdays to hear the Oskaloosa City Band.

Central Women’s Tennis Team Takes First Loss of Spring

(PELLA, Iowa) – The first loss of the spring for the Central College women’s tennis team came at the hands of a very talented Grinnell College side Saturday morning by a 7-2 margin.

In a match played inside H.S. Kuyper Fieldhouse due to the cold temperatures that continue to envelop the state of Iowa, the Dutch slipped to 11-3 and the Pioneers moved to 15-3.

Next Sunday, the Dutch will venture to Rock Island, Illinois for a pair of non-conference matches against Augustana College (Ill.) and Lake Forest College (Ill.). The Vikings (15-3) and the Foresters (18-2) will be another pair of stiff tests.
