Masters Winner Jordan Speith to Play John Deere Classic

Golf’s newly crowned Masters champion will play in the John Deere Classic near the Quad Cities in July. Twenty-one year old Jordan Spieth tied a Masters’ record by finishing 18 under par. He won the John Deere Classic as a teenager back in 2013.

John Deere Classic Tournament director Clair Peterson says they are excited to have the reigning Masters champ as part of the field. Peterson gave Spieth a sponsor’s exemption to play in the John Deere Classic when he was 18 years old. Over the years the John Deere Classic has given sponsor exemptions to players who Peterson feels will have a bright future on tour.

This year’s John Deere Classic is July 9th through the 12th.

William Penn’s Derek Seddon Continues Success

Derek Seddon continues his successful run as he claimed yet another Midwest Collegiate Conference Men’s Track and Field Athlete of the Week honor Monday.

Seddon was once again named Field Athlete of the Week (third in a row) as he won the discus at the Jim Duncan Invitational with a school-record toss of 162-1. The sophomore also placed fifth in the hammer throw at 158-1 and was fifth in the shot put as well at 46-0.5.

Seddon is currently first in the MCC in the discus and third in both the hammer (161-1) and shot put (46-1.25). He is also 11th in the entire NAIA in the discus.

WPU has now won 13 awards this year.

William Penn’s Maggie Yang Earns Her Fourth Weekly Honor Of The Year

Maggie Yang turned an individual title into another Midwest Collegiate Conference Women’s Golfer of the Week award Monday.

Yang earned her fourth weekly honor of the year (10th of her career) by winning the medalist honor in the 64-player field at the TPC Deere Run Invitational.

The junior carded a 152 (75-77) to claim her third title of the season. She tied Bellevue’s Renee Santoyo for first and then defeated her in a playoff. Her efforts helped #21 WPU finish second, just four strokes behind #11 Bellevue.

For the year, Yang owns a 77.8 stroke average (low of 71) and has posted 12 of her 17 rounds in the 70s.

It is the eighth award for WPU this year.

Osky Skate Park Gets A Makeover

The skate park at the Oskaloosa Urban Park received a mini-makeover Sunday afternoon when local and visiting riders picked up brushes and cleaned up the gazebo area. Local users Dawson Darrland, Tyler Smith, Andrew Silvers, and Tyler Pope had planned to clean and came to the park early afternoon ready to go. Visitor Steven Irwin from Ottumwa and Michael Flournoy and Marquis Bedford of Fairfield were hanging out and decided to join the project.

Tyler Smith said that he came to clean because he thought it looked dirty and he and his friends were hanging out so he decided to come. Andrew Silvers, who was part of the planning committee from the beginning of the skatepark, said that he wants to hold a competition so he is helping to clean the park. MCRF, along with these and other users, will host a competition this July.

Meetings will begin in June and will meet weekly until the competition. Dawson who admitted,”I come here every day to skate,” said that he too wanted to keep the park clean and have a competition. Smith stated clearly of the project “YOLO!” All park users will be invited to help plan a competition and the three visiting members who helped with this cleaning initiative all stated that they want to be involved as well and will come to planning meetings in June for the event.

Oskaloosa School Board Approvals

Oskaloosa school board members approved the certified budget for the 2015-16 school year at their meeting Monday night. Superintendent Russ Reiter said the legislature is still a long way from establishing a percentage of supplemental funding, but it is looking at zero dollars. The House has offered 1.25 percent while the Senate has offered 4 percent. The Senate offered another compromise of around 2 percent, but the House remains at 1.25. If the legislature is unable to come to an agreement the supplemental funding automatically goes to zero. After the public hearing, the board made the approval.

With that approval the district will have a budget of $31.588 million. Board financial manager Chad Vink said the budget published in the papers had a levy rate of $15.3172 per $1,000 in valuation and was based on 4 percent from the state. He said that if the state comes in at a lower rate the state auditor would make the adjustment automatically. The board voted for approval of the budget.

Board members approved a school calendar with a start date on Tuesday August 25. Teachers will have five days of in-service beginning on August 18. Students will have one-hour early outs the first two days. Most Wednesdays will be one-hour early outs for professional development. Fall parent teacher conferences will be October 15-16.
A 90-minute early out will be held on December 23. Winter break will be from December 24-January 4. In March, March 10 and 11 will be a three-hour early out for elementary parent-teacher conferences and professional development at the secondary schools. Monday and Tuesday March 14-15 will be vacation days for students and staff. High school conferences will be held April 7-8. Graduation will be held May 15 and the last day for students will be May 20.

Board members approved the resignations of Liz Foster as middle school science teacher and Noel Hoover, high school special education instructor. The approved the hiring of Jacey White as high school business teacher. White will have a one-year contract at $34,165.

The Oskaloosa Boy’s Golf Team Finishes 7th in Pella

The Oskaloosa boys’ golf team was in action at the Dutch Masters in Pella over the weekend at Bos Landen Golf Course. The Indians finished in 7th, led by Spencer Tucker who finished in second place, just three strokes behind medalist Dane Waldron of Clear Lake. Waldron shot a 76, while Tucker shot a 79.

Williamsburg was the team champion at 342, but they had to win a playoff against Creston to clinch it as both teams tied for first. Clear Lake was third, Pella’s Green team was fourth, Knoxville was 5th, and PCM finished in 6th ahead of Osky. Nodaway Valley finished in 8th, Pella Christian was in 9th, Fairfield finished in 10th, and Pella’s White team finished in 11th.

The boys’ and girls’ golf teams are back in action today. The boys are back at Bos Landen Golf Course to face Pella Christian, and the girls are at home against Albia and Chariton at Edmundson Golf Course.

The 88th Annual Oskaloosa Relays

The 88th Annual Oskaloosa Relays commenced on Saturday at the Lacey Recreational Complex Football Stadium, and resulted in a very fun and competitive meet.

The longest running high school track meet in the state saw the Pella boys get the team championship with 157 points, with Oskaloosa 56 points behind in second. Williamsburg finished in third, Ottumwa was in fourth, South Tama finished fifth, Newton was sixth, Centerville was seventh, and Albia finished in 8th in the Class A rankings.

Oskaloosa had a very good day overall, as they had four winners. Spencer DeJong set a new school record in the 3200 meter run with a time of 9:44.37, edging out brother Skylar by three seconds in another 1-2 finish from the twins. Skylar got the win in the 1600 with a time of 4:44.82, just ahead of Spencer by one second in another dominant race. Jack Moore set a new personal best in winning the high jump with a height of 6 feet flat. And the shuttle hurdle relay team of Max Johnson, Tucker Nunnikhoven, Austin Reed, and KiJana DeJong won that event with a time of 62.68 seconds.

On the girls’ side, Pella was again the winner in Class A, gathering 174 points. Oskaloosa finished second with 151 points. The Indians had several winners on the day. Sienna DeJong won the 3000 meter run and Asia Laudermilch won the 100 meter dash in individual events. The shuttle hurdle relay team of Maria Settimi, Jamie Holmberg, Leah VanMannen, and Josie Bunnell set a group best with a time of 1:11.38. The sprint medley relay team of Cara Roquet, Josie Bunnell, Asia Laudermilch, and Paige Howard got the win with a time of 2:01.74. The 4×100 meter relay team of Leah VanMannen, Shalandra Shilling, Brey Hill, and Asia Laudermilch set a season best at 51.92 seconds. And the 4×400 meter relay team of Taylor Richardson, Josie Bunnell, Cara Roquet, and Brey Hill got the win with a time of 4:21.11.

In the girls’ Class B standings, Pella Christian held off Sigourney by 14 points to get the crown. Ottumwa’s JV finished 3rd, Osky’s JV finished in 4th, North Mahaska was in 5th, and Pella’s JV came in 6th.

The track and field teams for Oskaloosa are back in action on Tuesday at the Don Newell Classic in Ottumwa.
