Hughes Honored For Second USMTS Title At Awards Banquet; Sobbing Reaps Rookie Accolades

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (Jan. 30) — A record 228 people attended Saturday night’s annual USMTS Awards Banquet in the Star Pavilion located at the Ameristar Casino Hotel in Kansas City as the United States Modified Touring Series closed the curtain on the 2015 season.

Jason Hughes was celebrated as the 2016 USMTS national champion following one of the most exciting points races in the 17-year history of the series.

The 41-year-old from Watts, Okla., blended together experience and hard work with a dash of good fortune in producing a nearly flawless effort in winning the opening night of the Featherlite Fall Jamboree to clinch his second USMTS title.

Hughes entered the night with a delicate four-point lead over two-time defending USMTS national champion Rodney Sanders, but proceeded to go uncontested as he led every lap of the main event to secure the win and the USMTS crown.

Hughes began the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s Cup powered by S&S Fishing & Rental tied for 15th in the standings and 82 points behind leader Jesse Sobbing. Winning three main events along the way, he slowly chipped away at the deficit and notched his fourth win of The Hunt in dominating fashion on the last night.

In claiming his second title, Hughes netted a $20,000 prize for topping the points plus valuable contingency awards from COMP Cams, Fast Shafts, Kevko Oil Pans & Components, MSD, VP Racing Fuels, AFCO Racing Products, Allstar Performance, Bell Racing Helmets, Beyea Custom Headers, Crane Cams, Driven Racing Oil, Edelbrock, Eibach Springs, FK Rod Ends, Genesis Racing Shocks, JRi Shocks, Keyser Manufacturing, KSE Racing Products, Marsh Racing Wheels, Quarter Master, Sybesma Graphics, Tilton Engineering and Wehrs Machine & Racing Products.

Also in charge of the wrenches for Hughes in 2010, crew chief Steve Karver was honored as the 2015 USMTS CPD Racing Shocks Crew Chief of the Year Award.

Hughes now owns two titles, along with Sanders and Ryan Gustin. Kelly Shryock, who won the first eight from 1999-2006, has nine overall. Hughes was runner-up to Shryock in many of those seasons.

Despite coming up short of a $100,000 payday for winning three regional titles and the USMTS national championship, Sanders may have settled for the runner-up spot in the final standings but claimed three regional titles on his way there.

Jesse Sobbing was the only one driver to compete in every USMTS points race in 2015, but he only needed 24 starts to easily capture the 2015 USMTS Rookie of the Year Award.

In his first full-time season battling the Best of the Best in dirt modified racing, Sobbing nabbed two feature wins and came into the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s Cup as the points leader before finishing fourth in the final standings.

The 34-year-old from Malvern, Iowa, also finished among the top-five in each of the four regions and took home contingency awards from COMP Cams, MSD, AFCO Racing Products, Allstar Performance, Beyea Custom Headers, Crane Cams, Driven Racing Oil, Eibach Springs, FK Rod Ends, Fuel Safe, Genesis Racing Shocks, Holley Performance, Keyser Manufacturing, Quarter Master, Tilton Engineering and Wehrs Machine & Racing Products.

Saturday’s ceremony was a joint effort for both the USMTS and United States Racing Association (USRA).

The 2016 USMTS Casey’s Cup powered by S&S Fishing & Rental will kicks off Thursday–Saturday, Feb. 11-13, at the Shady Oaks Speedway in Goliad, Texas, followed by tripleheader weekends at the Heart ‘O’ Texas Speedway near Waco, Texas, Feb. 18-20; Ark-La-Tex Speedway in Vivian, La., Feb. 25-27; and Southern Oklahoma Speedway in Ardmore, Okla., March 3-5.

Each show will pay $2,000, $3,000 and $4,000 to win, respectively, and will comprise the first dozen events in the expanded 17-race USMTS Production Jars Southern Region presented by Day Motor Sports.

Tim McGraw Performing At The 2016 Concert For Legends

Tim McGraw will perform at the 2016 Concert For Legends in Canton, Ohio, on August 5th to kick off a weekend celebrating the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s enshrinement of the Class of 2016. The concert will take place at the Canton’s newly renovated Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium and Tim is thrilled to take part.

With Iowa Caucuses Looming, Candidates Push For Turnout

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — For all the hype surrounding the February 1st caucuses, only a fraction of Iowa’s registered voters participate.

So over the final weekend, campaigns on both sides of the aisle were focused on turning out voters.

But the one question the polls or the crowds or the pundits can’t fully answer is just how many people will show up Monday? And what will the numbers mean?

Most Republicans expect a higher turnout in 2016 than the last two caucuses, when about 120,000 showed up. Democrats doubt they will match 2008, when nearly 240,000 came out.

The higher the turnout, the better the outcomes could be for businessman Donald Trump on the Republican side and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders on the Democratic side. Both are seeking to get nontraditional participants out.

Tyler Farr Cancels Shows After Being Place On Vocal Rest

Tyler Farr has been placed on vocal rest after undergoing surgery to have a vocal polyp removed from his vocal chords. Farr first became aware of vocal issues while on tour with Jason Aldean over the summer. To maximize recovery, Farr is cancelling all shows for the next few months, including the concerts with his good friend Lee Brice on the upcoming “Life Off My Years Tour.”

7th Grade Girl’s Basketball Plays Last Game Of The Season

The 7th grade girl’s teams played their last game of the season last night against Pella.

The A team continued to play with extraordinary effort and working hard but the Dutch were just to much last night as they snapped our three game winning streak 41-18. The girls played tough defense and were aggressive on offense but struggled with their rebounding.  Jillian Jennings led the way with 8 points. Maddie Haines had 3 points. Emily Simon, Kaylee Johnson and MaKenna Schaffner added 2 points a piece. Abby Braundmeier rounded out the scoring with 1 point. The A team finished with a 5-6 record.

The B and C teams both worked hard and played with great effort and the B team won 18-13 but the C team lost 25-8. The girls fought the entire game and were aggressive on both sides of the ball which led to better results than the first time we played Pella earlier this season. The B team was led by Lindy Slocum with 8 points. Paiven Knoot had 2 points. Abby Braundmeier, Alexis Sidebottom and Jazmin Chavez rounded out the scoring with 2 points a piece. The C team was led by Paiven Knoot, MaKayla Covey, Abigail Vroegh and Jazmin Chavez who all had 2 points a piece. The B team finished with a 2-7 record and the C team finished with a 2-6 record.
This was a great season for the 7th grade girls, every member of the team has improved tremendously from the start of the season to the end. There is a lot of talent and potential in this team which is very exciting for the future. We want to thank everyone for supporting us and coming out to games, it really means a lot!

Statesmen Succumb To Central On Mat

Oskaloosa–The youth of the William Penn wrestling squad was unfortunately exposed Thursday as it fell 40-3 to Central in dual-meet action.

The Statesmen (2-3) put seven freshmen on the mat in the dual, and hard as they tried, they could not knock off their more-experienced foes.  Central, which is #23 in NCAA Division III, is now 8-2 on the year.

Tommy Rios (Fr., Tucson, Ariz., Exercise Science) claimed the lone WPU victory, holding off Chase Petty 11-8 at 133 pounds.

Six more matches went the distance with heavyweight Matthew Cuthbert (Fr., Yucaipa, Calif., Sociology) having the next-best effort with a 5-2 setback to Jay Pike.

Next Up: William Penn will split its squad Saturday as the varsity travels to Lamoni to compete at the Heart Duals, while the remaining competitors travel to Dubuque to compete in the Loras Open.

Audit report released

OSKALOOSA — Van Maanen, Sietstra, Meyer & Nikkel, PC, Certified Public Accountants recently released an audit report on the Oskaloosa Community School District in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

The District’s revenues totaled $30,875,708 for the year ended June 30, 2015, a 4.4{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b} increase from the prior year. Revenues included $11,640,661 in local tax; charges for service of $1,706,196; operating grants, contributions and restricted interest of $5,038,649; unrestricted interest of $14,492; and
other general revenues of $12,475,710.

Expenses for District operations totaled $28,948,167, a 0.6{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b} increase from the prior year. Expenses included $17,209,045 for instruction, $7,807,833 for support services and $3,931,289 for other expenditures.

This report contained recommendations to the Board of Education and District officials. The report noted issues with certified enrollment and supplementary weighting.

The District has responded that corrective action is being taken on these items . The report also noted expenditures in excess of budgeted amounts
in two different functional areas and deficit balances in two different funds. The District has responded that corrective action is being taken on these items also.
