Wisconsin Murder Suspects Arrested In Storm Lake, Iowa

STORM LAKE, Iowa (AP) — Two Wisconsin men are facing homicide charges after police and FBI officers arrested them in Storm Lake.
Twenty-three-year-old Sergio Ortiz-Raygoza and 22-year-old Eric Salazar-Mota, both of Beloit, Wisconsin, were arrested Sunday on homicide warrants in connection to the January shooting death of a 5-year-old in Beloit.
Police say the boy was shot by people targeting his father, who was driving a vehicle.
Salazar-Mota also had multiple warrants out of Wisconsin, including a federal warrant for flight to avoid prosecution.
Officers and FBI officials arrested the two suspects late Sunday. Both remained Tuesday in Buena Vista County Jail pending extradition.
Wisconsin court records show both men were charged with first-degree intentional homicide Monday. Records didn’t list attorneys who could be reached for comment.

Oskaloosa Drops Doubleheader to Dallas Center Grimes

Oskaloosa dropped a conference doubleheader to Dallas Center Grimes last night as heard live on KMZN. The games originally scheduled for tonight were moved to Monday due to Tuesday’s expected Winter weather. The Oskaloosa girls hung tight with D-C-G through the first eight minutes trailing just 12-10 after one quarter, but from there turnovers cost the Indians as they committed 29 total and were held to just eight points the rest of the way as D-C-G cruised to a 65-18 win. Alexis Westercamp led Oskaloosa with eight points and Leah Van Maanen added six as Osky fell to 2-14 this season and 0-8 in conference play.
The boys game saw Oskaloosa playing catch up from the opening tip as D-C-G jumped out to a 14-0 lead thanks to red hot long range shooting and despite a late Osky charge the Mustangs got a 70-49 win. Osky closed the gap to eight points late third quarter and early fourth quarter but couldn’t finish the charge as D-C-G pulled away for the 21 point win. Not known for their long range shooting, D-C-G drained 9 three pointers in the first half led by Doug Heritage who hit seven of those and finished with 32 points to lead all scorers. Osky was led by Jack Moore with 12 points, Spencer Tucker contributed nine and Austin Fagen-Scholes and Jared Kruse each added eight points as Osky fell to 6-10 on the season and 1-8 in LHC play. Vince Gill And Eddie Stubbs Announce Special Opry Shows

Vince Gill and legendary Grand Ole Opry announcer Eddie Stubbs held a live Facebook Chat at the Ernest Tubb Record Shop in downtown Nashville last week to make a very special announcement. The two announced that Gill will celebrate his 25th Anniversary as a member of the Opry with two special shows on Saturday, August 14th. Vince became a member on August 10th, 1991.
Cruz Says Iowa Win Is Victory For Grassroots

Ted Cruz tells The Associated Press that his victory in Iowa’s Republican presidential caucuses is a victory for the grassroots, and he says his triumph is part of a larger movement of conservatives against what he calls the “Washington cartel.”
Cruz says his win “was a victory for courageous conservatives in Iowa and all around the country.”
The first-term Texas senator says that from “Day One, we built our campaign as a movement for Americans to organize and rally to band together against the disaster of the Washington cartel.”
Little Hawkeye Wrestling Conference Results

Oskaloosa crowned three individual Little Hawkeye Conference wrestling champions on Saturday… Drew Sams at 132, Jason Beebe at 170 and Callan Tomlin at 220. Josh Diehl, Talon Munger, Kaia Graham and Tyson Breuklander each finished 4th and Brady Beerbower and Zaian Mamun both finished fifth. Lane Milner and Jake Simon won titles for Grinnell, and Keegan Poole won the heavyweight title for Pella. It was a tight team race all day between D-C-G and Norwalk but in the end D-C-G claimed the team title by 9.5 points over Norwalk, followed by Newton, Grinnell, Oskaloosa and Pella.
Albia’s Carter Isley became just the third wrestler ever to win four Southern Iowa Classic championships as he claimed the heavyweight title Saturday. Tyler Landgrebe of Eddyville Blakesburg Fremont won the title at 106, Dakota Boyer of E-B-F was the champion at 138, Dylan Henderson of Davis County won the title at 170, and Travis Poffenbarger of Knoxville claimed the title at 220 .
Sigourney Keota won the South Iowa Cedar League Tournament convincingly, Tri County/Montezuma finished 3rd, Lynnville Sully was 4th, and North Mahaska finished 6th. Luke House, Lane Boender, and Noah Boender each won championships for the Savage Cobras as did Jarrett Stodghill of North Mahaska. Tyler Strasser of North Mahaska, Travis Lewis of Tri County Montezuma, Carson Dunsbergen and Sage Zylstra of Lynnville Sully, and Alec Schuster, Kaleb Reeves and Zeb Webb of Sigourney Keota each finished 2nd.
Ottumwa finished 10th of 18 teams at the CIML Invite. Southeast Polk won the meet followed by Valley and Fort Dodge. Isaiah Cox finished 2nd at 182 losing a close 6-5 decision in the finals, Wyatt Schlotter finished 3rd at 152, and Alec Clark at 120 and Tyler Bookin-Nosbisch at heavyweight both finished 4th.
Pekin finished 7th and Cardinal 10th at the Southeast Iowa Super Conference tournament. Dakota Miller of Cardinal finished 2nd at 145, Pekin’s Kaden Baker was 2nd at 160, Ethan Cooksey finished 3rd at 170, Clayton Greiner and Drake Harbison each finished 4th as did Will Gonzalez-Tapeti of Cardinal.

Oskaloosa City Council 2-1-16

The Oskaloosa City Council met at 6 pm on Monday, February 1st.
The main event of the night focused around the swearing in of new police officer Janay Pritchett. Pritchett Graduated from William Penn and interned at the Oskaloosa Police Force before accepting a full-time job.
The meeting went to an announcement of vacancies including:
Airport Commissions
Board of Adjustments
Civil Service Commissions
Historic Preservation Commission
and the Municipal Housing Agency
The proposed 2015-2016 budget amendment and 2016-2017 budget and setting date for a public hearing was approved.
Also approved, was an application for industrial Tax Abatement for value added in the Revitalization area of 2102 South 17th Street which includes a new building for the Lumber business. An application for residential Tax Abatement was approved along with the Industrial tax abatement.
The last order of business included the approval of a user charge for providing necessary funding of the operation and maintenance of the city’s wastewater treatment works.
The meeting adjourned at approximately 6:15 Pm.
Eddyville Blakesburg Fremont Jazz Band Earns Division I

On Saturday, January 30th, the Eddyville Blakesburg Fremont High School Jazz Band earned a division I rating at the State Jazz Band Contest in Pella. The band has earned a division I rating twelve of the last fourteen years. E.B.F.H.S. Jazz I is directed by Joe Overton. The band has 22 members this year.
The next competition for Jazz I will be at the Indian Hills Jazz Festival on February 27th.
They will perform at 8:25 in class 2A competition. On March 5th, the band will defend their title at the SEIBA District Jazz Contest in Iowa City. The annual Jazz Band Concert will be on March 15th at 7:00. The EBFHS Jazz Band will also appear at the Night of Jazz at the Daily Auditorium in Oskaloosa on Friday April1st along with other area jazz bands. Friends and supporters of the band are encouraged to attend.

On Wednesday January 27th, 15 members of the EBFHS Band performed with the 2016 SCC All-Conference Band at Knoxville High School. The guest conductor was Erin Bodnar, band director from Graceland University. Pictured are: 1st row Maddison Giltner, Devon Severson, and Andrew Hart. 2nd row Maggie Voyles, Jula Fairchild, Payton Fry, Jessie Eveland, and Sara Loving. 3rd row Claire Jager, Teri Jo Lane, Grace Manternach, Delanee Van Zante, Ms. Bodnar, Jake Fisher, and Brandon Dicks.
Select students from all of the schools in the South Central Conference rehearsed during the morning with Ms. Bodnar and then presented a concert for the Knoxville 5th – 8th grade students in the afternoon.
