Loyola Becomes Fourth #11 To Reach Final Four

While a pair of Number 1 seeds advanced to the Final Four yesterday, beating a #2 and #3, there were some far more crooked numbers that advanced on Saturday.

And the most crooked of them all was Saturday’s opening Elite Eight game between Number 11 Loyola Chicago Ramblers and the Number 9 K-State Wildcats.

With those numbers, this was certainly the game that guaranteed a Cinderella.

And when the clock struck midnight it was the Number 11 Ramblers who were still dancing, with a decisive 78-62 win.

Ben Richardson scored a career-high 23 points making the 11th-seeded bracket busting Ramblers (32-5) tied for the lowest-seeded team ever to reach the Final Four.

And while that may not be a first, they can still be because the other three teams—LSU in 1986, George Mason in 2006, and VCU in 2011—all lost in the following round.

Next up for Loyola will be the Michigan Wolverines who stand in the way of Loyola becoming the lowest-seeded team ever to win a national championship, a distinction held by No. 8 seed Villanova since 1985.

WPU Women’s Bowling Competes at NAIA Invitational

(HIGHLAND, Indiana) – The Statesmen Women’s Bowling Team gained great experience in a big-time national tournament setting as it battled at the NAIA Invitational Friday, March 23 and Saturday, March 24.

William Penn University rolled in 24 Baker games before facing off against the NAIA’s best in bracket play. The navy and gold finished 11th out of 20 teams with 4,464 pins (186.0 average), while Indiana Tech claimed the top seed with 4,781 pins (199.2 average).

By finishing in the top 12, the Statesmen received a bye in the double-elimination format and took on #6 seed Grand View in the second round. Unfortunately, the squad came up just short in a 3-2 loss (204-201, 171-245, 189-180, 176-207, 215-268).

WPU was demoted to the consolation bracket and failed to move on, ending its trip at 0-2 with a 3-1 setback to #14 Marian (Ind.) (175-195, 158-258, 197-168, 150-252).

This is the final year the NAIA will have an Invitational as next year the sport moves to Championship status.

Statesmen Men’s Bowling Takes Fourth at NAIA Invite

(HIGHLAND, Indiana) – The William Penn University Men’s Bowling Team made a deep run, but fell shy of a national crown as it competed at the NAIA Invitational Friday, March 23 through Sunday, March 25.

William Penn rolled in 24 Baker qualifying games before facing off against the NAIA’s best in bracket play. The navy and gold finished fourth out of 20 teams with 5,132 pins (213.8 average), while Webber International (Fla.) and Robert Morris (Ill.) tied for the most pins with 5,457 (227.4 average). Webber international won the tiebreaker to claim the top seed.

By finishing in the top 12, the Statesmen bowlers received a bye in the double-elimination format and took on #20 seed Lindsey Wilson in the second round. The program won its first match 3-1 by scores of 216-196, 193-215, 215-174, 191-187.

Unfortunately, in a foreshadowing of the future, WPU was dropped to the consolation bracket with a 3-0 loss to #5 seed St. Ambrose (160-213, 163-223, 202-247).

However, William Penn rebounded after the setback by winning three consecutive matches to get to the consolation quarterfinals. First, the navy and gold dropped #16 seed Concordia (Mich.) 3-1 (184-214, 217-163, 210-181, 201-156) and then defeated #9 seed St. Francis (Ill.) by the same 3-1 tally (162-189, 206-169, 246-231, 235-194).

WPU claimed its biggest win as it eliminated #2 seed Robert Morris in five games (234-227, 136-243, 199-202, 257-231, 222-215), but the road to the biggest trophy ended in the next round as St. Ambrose slipped past the Statesmen 3-1 (203-209, 237-221, 233-280, 171-246). WPU finished the tournament with a 4-2 record, tying SAU and Lawrence Tech for the second-best record in the field.

The Fighting Bees eventually reached the final and actually forced an ‘if necessary’ match, but Webber International held its seed for the crown.

This is the final year the NAIA will have an Invitational as next year the sport moves to Championship status.

Team members included Quincy Bruce (Sr., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, General Accounting), Braxton Coble (Jr., Ottumwa, Iowa, Business Management), David Decker (So., Peyton, Colo., Physical Education), Bret Keimig(Sr., Davenport, Iowa, Physical Education), Aleksander Kostric (Fr., Koper, Slovenia, Sports Management), Rok Kostric (Fr., Koper, Slovenia, Sports Management), Curtis Majka (Sr., Elgin, Ill., Mechanical Engineering), and Nick Walker (Jr., Zeeland, Mich., Business Management).

For his efforts, Rok Kostric was named to the five-person all-tournament team.

William Penn will try for an even bigger national crown–the ultimate crown–as it competes in the USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships in Lincoln, Neb. from April 16–21.

Last Eggs & Issues of the Season Announced

(OSKALOOSA, Iowa) – The last Eggs & Issues forum, hosted by the Oskaloosa Area Chamber and Development Group, will be held tomorrow (Saturday, March 24) at Smokey Row in Oskaloosa from 8:30-9:30 AM. This final session of the season will feature local residents running for elected positions in the Oskaloosa and Mahaska County community.

On the panel will be:

Holly Brink. Brink is running for Iowa House District 80. The area that is included in this district is East Mahaska, West Wapello, Monroe, and Appanoose County.

Henry “Willie” Van Weelden. Van Weelden is running for re-election to the Mahaska County Board of Supervisors.

Dustin D. Hite. Hite is running for Iowa House of Representatives District 79. The area that is included in this district is Western Mahaska County, all of Oskaloosa, University Park, and North East Marion, including Pella.

The final Eggs & Issues moderator will be Oskaloosa Mayor Dave Krutzfeldt.

After a brief introduction by each panel member, they will be open to take questions from those present, as this is an open forum.

Statesmen Bowling Teams to Compete in NAIA Invitational

(OSKALOOSA, Iowa) – For the first in six years, the William Penn bowling teams will battle for an NAIA title as they compete at the NAIA Invitational Friday through Sunday.

Bowling is currently an emerging sport in the NAIA and will finally gain Championship status next year. While the tournament is an Invitational and not a Championship, teams must still earn an invitation based on high national rankings.

In past years, despite receiving an invitation, William Penn has declined to compete. The Statesmen men finished as high as second in 2010-2011, while the women were fifth in 2011-2012.

The event is stocked with talented teams on both sides that have qualified for the USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships next month in Lincoln, Neb.; eight men’s teams have qualified, while five women’s teams have also done so. At the end of the regular season, the WPU men were 17th and the women were 24th and both have advanced to the ITC.

Headlining the men’s 20-team field is Calumet-St. Joseph (Ind.), which is #1 in collegebowling.com’s ranking that includes every program in the nation, regardless of division. Three other squads are also in the top 10 nationally, while a total of nine top-20 programs will compete this weekend. All 20 teams in the field are ranked in the top 51 in the country.

On the women’s side, #3 St. Ambrose is the top squad in the 20-program field, while 10 top-20 teams will be featured (four from the top 10). All 20 teams are ranked in the top 39 in the country.

William Penn Trio Earn Scholar-Athlete Honors

(OSKALOOSA, Iowa) – Three players from the William Penn women’s basketball team were honored for their excellence in the classroom as they were named 2017-2018 Daktronics-NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball Scholar-Athletes Monday.

Jenna Santi (Jr., Oak Creek, Wis., Physical Education) led the group with a 3.89 Grade Point Average, while Idalis Riley (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn., Psychology and Human Services) currently has a 3.73 GPA and Sarah Hansen (Sr., Neponset, Ill., Psychology and Human Services) is posting a 3.62 GPA. The honor is the first for all three individuals.

To be eligible for the award, athletes must be of at least junior academic standing, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or above on a 4.0 scale, and have attended the nominating institution for at least one full academic year.

IHCC Offering Free High School Equivalency Classes

(OTTUMWA, Iowa) – Indian Hills Community College is offering a path for interested people to earn their high school equivalency diploma in as little as two months and the next courses begin in April.

Interested parties may attend an orientation meeting about earning their High School Equivalency Diploma on Tuesday, April 3 at 9:00 AM in the Community Education Center at the North Campus of Indian Hills Community College (15260 Truman Street, Suite 2, Ottumwa, IA).

The orientation lends to a quick turnaround. Classes will begin the following Monday, April 9. Morning and afternoon classes are available, and students are encouraged to work at their own pace. Online classes are also available.

Participants are eligible to take the HiSET if they are 19 or older and not enrolled in high school OR if they are 17 or 18, out of school, and have parental permission.

Indian Hills Community College offers HiSET (High School Equivalency Tests, formerly GED) preparation courses and materials at no cost. To sign up or learn more, call 641-683-5747.

Jason Aldean May Be Opening A Bar In Nashville

It looks like Jason Aldean may be the next country star to open a bar on Nashville’s Lower Broadway.

According to the “Nashville Business Journal,” TC Restaurant Group filed paperwork for Jason Aldean’s Kitchen + Rooftop Bar and the company just purchased a property in the area for $32 million in a building that already houses the honky tonks Tequila Cowboy and WannaB’s Karaoke Bar. 

Jason has yet to confirm the news of the possible Nashville spot, but if he is indeed opening a place he will join a long list of country stars who already have establishments in the area, including Blake Shelton, Dierks Bentley, Florida Georgia Line, John Rich and more.
