Biden to sign massive climate and health care legislation

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. (AP) — President Joe Biden is preparing to sign Democrats’ landmark climate change and health care bill. It’s the “final piece” of the president’s pared-down domestic agenda as he aims to boost his party’s standing with voters ahead of midterm elections. The legislation includes the biggest federal investment ever to fight climate change — some $375 billion over a decade. It also caps prescription drug costs at $2,000 out-of-pocket annually for Medicare recipients, and helps an estimated 13 million Americans pay for health care insurance by extending subsidies provided during the coronavirus pandemic. The measure is paid for in part by new taxes on large companies.

Judge rules reluctant landowner list for carbon pipeline should be released to public

By O. Kay Henderson (Radio Iowa)

A district court judge has ruled the list of landowners who haven’t agreed to voluntary easements for the proposed Summit Carbon Solutions pipeline must be released to the public. The Iowa Chapter of the Sierra Club sued after the Iowa Utilities Board said the names would remain secret at the developer’s request.

Summit is still working to secure agreements with landowners for about 60% of its proposed carbon pipeline route through Iowa. If the Iowa Utilities Board grants eminent domain authority for the project, the list would be used to determine which properties could be seized without negotiations between Summit and landowners.

A spokeswoman for the Sierra Club’s Iowa chapter says reluctant landowners should be able to see the list so they can communicate with like-minded Iowans and organize unified opposition to the pipeline.

Summit could appeal the judge’s ruling. The company says it’s reasonable that landowners themselves get to choose whether their names and contact information are made public and Summit aims to protect landowners from harassment.

Earlier this month a Summit executive said about 750 Iowa landowners have voluntarily agreed to let Summit’s pipeline run through their property. Two other companies are proposing carbon pipelines through Iowa.

Carrie Underwood’s ‘Saturday Night Football’ Opening To Have Local Flair

Carrie Underwood is set to return to open NBC’s Sunday Night Football next month, and this year’s opening may look a little different.

This year, NBC announced they plan to bring some local flavor to the opening, cutting scenes of her singing “Waiting All Day For Sunday Night,” with scenes from each week’s host city, as well as activity around that night’s stadium.

And Carrie, for one, is certainly excited to be back for another year.

“Performing the show open for Sunday Night Football for 10 years has been such a joy and privilege for me,” she shares. “It’s always a fun day when we shoot the new open — our amazing creative team somehow manages to top themselves year after year.”

Sunday Night Football season kicks off September 11th

  • Meanwhile, Carrie is set to kick off her Denim & Rhinestones Tour in October, and she’s hard at work preparing for the trek, which she loves to do. “I think my favorite parts of putting a new tour together is the anticipation. I love rehearsals as well,” she says. “I feel like it’s, it’s like a show with no pressure (laughs), no pressure, no audience and we just kind of get to play music and do all that stuff and it’s fun, and so I really, I enjoy rehearsals.”

Iowa SOS provides grants to every county to improve accessibility for voters with disabilities

DES MOINES – Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate is providing a $1,000 grant to every county in the state to improve voter access ahead of the 2022 general election. The grant is intended for counties to partner with local advocacy organizations and self-advocates to receive feedback on how polling places can be more accessible for Iowans with disabilities.

“I want all voters to have a positive experience when they cast their ballot,” Secretary Pate said. “Every polling place is required to be accessible, but we need to move past simple compliance. Inclusion begins in the planning stages and providing county auditors with the resources to work with local organizations to improve access will make sure every Iowan can easily navigate their polling place on Election Day.”

Approximately 300,000 Iowans have a disability. Counties can use the grant to improve accessibility considerations and receive communication, etiquette, and sensitivity training to understand the perspective of voters with disabilities.

“Voting can be challenging for people with disabilities,” said Bill Kallestad, public policy manager for the Iowa Developmental Disabilities Council. “This grant opportunity is a great way to take steps to understand and address these challenges. Learning about voting challenges from people with disabilities can lead to meaningful change.”

The deadline for counties to request the grant funds is August 31 and the scope of work must be completed by the November 2022 general election.

Central College Offers New Strength and Conditioning Major

PELLA — Central College will launch a new strength and conditioning major beginning in Fall 2022. Strength and conditioning majors are a new undergraduate option to address changes in the health and wellness industry.

“Central is a leader in offering this specialized major for strength and conditioning coaches,” says Dave Pavlat, associate professor of kinesiology. “A primary focus for students will be working with athletes to improve sports performance and decrease risk of injury. Graduates of Central’s program will be able to build a training atmosphere that supports athletes to perform at their best ability.”

A bachelor’s degree with a strength and conditioning major prepares students for entry-level strength and conditioning coaching positions in public and private settings. This major under the kinesiology department will give students hands-on, classroom and clinical experiences that develop and enhance their skills by working with Central’s student-athlete teams.

“Adding this major was a logical next step as we prepare future coaches. Our program builds upon our excellent athletics, kinesiology and education programs,” says John Roslien, associate professor of kinesiology and kinesiology department chair. “Students will be learning and experience coaching on a daily basis with college-level athletes.”

The strength and conditioning program will provide experiences for students and outcomes that align with the Council on Accreditation of Strength and Conditioning Education necessary to be competent, professional entry-level strength and conditioning coaches.

“Recently, Central transitioned to kinesiology and has retired the term and major of exercise science. Kinesiology looks at whole body mechanics,” Roslien says. “Rather than just exercise science, the kinesiology curriculum focuses on the whole body for performance, rehabilitation and education. It’s part of the pre-professional health tracks like physical therapy, occupational therapy and strength and conditioning.”

American Kinesiology Association defines kinesiology is an academic discipline that involves the study of physical activity and its impact on health, society, and quality of life. Central is a member of the AKA.

Keith Urban On The Special Role Olivia Newton-John Played In His Life

Keith Urban is opening up about the role the late Olivia Newton-John played in his life and career.

“Olivia’s one of those people that for so many Australians, particularly, has just always been part of the fabric of life, you know?,” he shares. “She was there in the 70s and kinda has just been there, for all of my life it feels like she’s been there.”

He says he first met her at a songwriters’ retreat, noting, “I was a bit of a fanboy,” adding, “she couldn’t have been more down-to-earth, kind, friendly, warm, funny, everything I thought she would be, she was exactly that.”

Keith also shares that Olivia was there the night he first met wife Nicole Kidman, as they were both being honored for being Australians who had done well in America and Olivia was on hand to introduce him. “I asked Olivia if she would do it for me, so she was the person who introduced me that night, that fateful night when I met my wife,” he says. “So, she also plays that very special role in our past, as well.”
