Scammers Target Oskaloosa Residents

MidAmerican Energy received several reports of scammers targeting Oskaloosa customers over the phone today (Jan. 26). Anyone can be a target for a scammer, at any time of year, so it’s important to know exactly what to do to protect yourself.

Scammers typically call customers and demand immediate payment, often within minutes. They may ask you to pay with a prepaid (Green Dot) debit card. This is a scam. If you’re behind on your bill, you’ll receive several notifications; disconnection is a last resort, not a first step in the process. MidAmerican Energy accepts many different forms of payment, so a specific payment method is never required.

If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and call local police and your energy provider to report the scam and check the status of your account. Customers can check their balance online using My Account at www.midamericanenergy.com or by calling MidAmerican Energy at 888-427-5632, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Here are some steps you can follow to stay safe from scammers:

  • Never give out personal information such as credit card or account numbers. Utilities will not ask for this information over the phone.
  • Beware of any caller who asks you to pay with a prepaid debit card or gift card. MidAmerican Energy does not accept this type of payment.
  • Ask for proper identification from anyone who approaches you claiming to be from a service provider. Call the service provider directly to verify the purpose for the visit. Use the number published on your monthly bill or the company’s website.

Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs Features 64 Local Kids

(OSKALOOSA, Iowa) – At least 64 local children will be featured in the upcoming Missoula Children’s Theatre: Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs at George Daily Auditorium in Oskaloosa. Performances will take place this Saturday, Jan. 27 at 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. The cost to adults is $10, and for students the cost is $5.

About the Show

A young princess named Snow White finds herself in peril when her stepmother, the Queen, is told be her Magic Mirror that the princess is fairer than she! Aided by her two Henchmen and a band of evil Bats, the Queen plots to get rid of Snow White. Snow White escapes with the help of Witless the Woodsman and finds a new home with the Seven Dwarfs. When the Queen learns of Snow White’s whereabouts, she attempts to poison Snow White. But the Queen’s evil plans are thwarted when Snow White’s fearless Forest Friends, her father King Backwards, the Seven Dwarfs, and the Prince come to her rescue.

Children ages 5-18 were invited to audition, rehearse, and perform in this adaptation, sponsored by MidWestOne Bank and Kiwanis Club of Oskaloosa.

Maren Morris Is Just Really Over It

Maren Morris recently told Billboard what her fans could expect from her in the year ahead: more touring, writing and recording.

But first, feminism.

When the magazine asked Morris for her thoughts on all the women’s issues on everyone’s minds right now, she said that getting things out in the open is the right thing to do.

“Obviously, I am a huge backer of the Time’s Up movement. I feel fortunate that in my own life I have not had huge problems,” Morris told Billboard. “But don’t get me wrong, I have certainly had my own share of struggles over the years. You see stuff in the music industry, too, and I think what is coming out of all these conversations is that it’s making people double-check themselves.

“That’s a good thing. I was emotional watching the Golden Globes and cried when Oprah spoke so eloquently.”

And if there’s some kind of Twitter fight over Morris’ point of view, so be it. Her approach when her followers disagree with her is to avoid confrontation, but speak her mind. “I am hoping that by stating a clear, strong message on social media that we’re not taking this kind of stuff anymore, it will be seen by women and that it would encourage them to take charge when it happens to them. Basically, I try to live by the Golden Rule and treat people respectfully,” she said. “I’m just really over the way some people have no problem acting disrespectful and shaming women.”

Morris’ video for “I Could Use a Love Song” — her first No. 1 song — is another way she is setting a powerful example for women of all ages.

“Essentially, that’s my story: that you have these big dreams, but there’s a person in your life that just doesn’t comprehend the importance of them. So, when the video was conceptualized, we took that idea, made the lead character a dancer, and I feel it came out as great as we had hoped. My hope is that girls and women will see that story and it will inspire them in their own particular journey,” she said.

Osky Boys Survive Road Test at Grinnell

(Grinnell, Iowa) – The Oskaloosa boys’ basketball team didn’t have its full roster available Tuesday night and struggled to separate from winless Grinnell, but the Indians were able to complete the road win, 56-45. The Oskaloosa girls had a rough night against #3 Grinnell, falling 104-29.

In the boys’ game, Xavier Foster was on fire to start, scoring the Indians’ first 12 points with a myriad of moves down low and a couple of threes. Osky would close the first quarter strong and hold a 19-10 lead.

After that, however, Grinnell switched their defense into a zone, and Oskaloosa would have problems. All season long, junior Cole Henry has been the focal point of the Osky zone offense and he was one of four players out with an illness Tuesday night. That forced Jarad Kruse to move into Henry’s spot instead of his normal spot on the wing.
The difference was apparent, as the Indians succumbed to a 12-0 Grinnell run that would eventually tie the game at 19, but Osky would score the last nine in the first half to take a 28-19 advantage into the locker room.

The third quarter was much of the same, as Osky couldn’t truly grab a hold of the game. The Indians would push their lead to 15 at one point, but Grinnell immediately fought back and before the end of the quarter, had it back down to ten at 39-29.

In the fourth, the teams would trade hoops throughout, and Osky was able to finish the game with clutch free throws from Rian Yates and Tanner DeKock. The final score ended up with Osky winning 56-45.

Xavier Foster would finish with a great line of 21 points, 12 rebounds, 2 assists, and 4 blocks. Jarad Kruse would join him in double figures with 13 points, 8 boards, and 4 assists. Rian Yates was a good playmaker in his first start of the year, scoring 9 points, dishing out five dimes and grabbing three steals. Oskaloosa only turned the ball over five times as a team.

Grinnell was led by senior Ethan Mitchell, who had 18 points and 6 rebounds.

Oskaloosa moves to 14-1 on the season and 9-0 in the Little Hawkeye Conference. Grinnell is now 0-14 overall and 0-9 in the LHC.

The girls’ game was quite the opposite, as the highly ranked Grinnell girls dominated throughout en route to a 104-29 victory over winless Oskaloosa.

Naomi Jackson was the hot hand, scoring a career high of 35 points. Sienna Durr added 20 for the Tigers, who are now 15-1 overall and 8-1 in conference play. Oskaloosa was led by Marleigh Denburger, who finished with 8 points and 7 rebounds. Osky is now 0-16 overall and 0-9 in the conference.

Oskaloosa will be back in action Friday night at home against Dallas Center-Grimes. The game can be seen on radiokmzn.com and MCG Channel 7 in Osky. The radio broadcast can be found on 99.5 FM/740 AM KMZN and the KMZN mobile app. The pregame show starts at 6 PM with the girls starting the doubleheader at 6:15.

Offbeat News: A Baby Cow, Stupid Criminals, & More

OFFBEAT NEWS:

Pictures and videos have surfaced of a baby cow who’s missing its front legs and walks on its hind legs. When the cow stands straight up it’s about the same height as a child. No one knows how the cow lost its front legs, but people are starting to worry.

Some believe the animal should be put down, while others want to give it a sling with wheels to help it walk. The photos of the cow, surfacing from Indonesia, are quite bizarre alarming people of its safety. Nevertheless, the cow doesn’t appear to be in pain, but could use some love and affection.

Anyone who has used the dating app Tinder knows that swiping right on a photo of someone means you would consider meeting them in real life to see if there is some real chemistry—and swiping left means instant rejection.
A Missouri State University freshman has taken matters into his own hands when he accidently swiped left on a girl from his school on Tinder. He said his “heart sank” when he accidently rejected a fellow student named Claudia. All he could remember was her first name and bits of her bio, so he decided to email every Claudia in the university.

Classmates are calling it the tale of Tinderella. In his email, the freshman explained “the one that got away” and asked Claudia to email him back with a simple answer: left or right? If she said “right” then he offered to take her for doughnuts.

Well folks, Claudia spoke up and she said “right!” Claudia Alley knew the email was about her after spotting a joke referenced in the email from her bio. She even took to twitter to share the revelation with a side-by-side of the email and her Tinder profile. It’s since accumulated thousands of views. Even Claudia’s mom heard about it on the radio! The two have linked up and are set to go for doughnuts this week.

STUPID CRIMINALS:

  • Police say a Taco Bell employee was a little too upset about having to work a morning shift. The crank complained to his supervisor who told him “to stop being a cry baby.” Next thing you know, the worker tossed a burrito at his supervisor, when melted cheese lands on the her. The employee then breaks his headset and storms out. No arrests have been made yet.
  • Bond has been set at $33,000 cash for a Miami self-proclaimed “Sovereign Citizen.” According to police the man busted into a neighboring apartment after hearing a boyfriend and girlfriend arguing. He proceeded to hit the boyfriend in the head with nunchucks. Lenvil Persinger describes himself as a “sovereign citizen” and believes the law does not apply to him. He wouldn’t even talk to investigators after arrest.

 

Indianola Invite Results

(Indianola, Iowa) – The Oskaloosa Indian swimmers headed out for an Invitational Swim meet on Saturday and the boys came away with a great showing. The boys earned 5 top 3 finishes in the 11 races and several more finished in the top 5. At the meet they were competing against Indianola (Indianola, Winterset, Knoxville, SE Warren), NCMP (Newton, Colfax, Mingo, Pella) and Grinnell swim teams all at the new YMCA in Indianola.

The boys started out with a great race in the 200 Medley Relay as Colin Fiechtner, Jack Dawson, Jack Miller and Jarod Miller finished in a time of 1:53.68 to earn a 3rd place finish and the Bronze medal to start off the meet.

Next up was the 200 Free and Owen Gordon was able to take several seconds off of his personal best and finished in a time of 2:01.51 for a 4th place finish and Nicholas Koenig stepped up and swam his first 200 Free in his career in a time of 2:53.20

Carson Breon was next as he stepped up to the blocks and swam the 200 IM in a time of 2:15.01 and earned a 2nd place finish, Silver Medal, for the Indians.

In the 50 Free Oskaloosa sent 4 swimmers to compete in the event. Top finisher for the Indians was Colin Fiechtner who swam a 25.19 for a 7th place finish, Jarod Miller swam a 25,74 for an 8th place finish, Carson Abrahamson finished in 26.48 and Anthony Chavez finished in a time of 34.45

Next event was the 100 Fly as Oskaloosa sent Jack Miller who finished in a time of 59.47 for a 2nd place finish, Silver Medal, and Jack Dawson who finished in a time of 1:03.35 for a 6th place finish.

In the 100 Free Oskaloosa sent 4 swimmers to compete in this event. Carson Breon was the top finisher for the Indians as he swam a 54.11 for a 4th place finish. Next was Owen Gordon who finished in a time of 54.67 for the 5th place position. Then Nicholas Koenig finished in a time of 1”15.17 and Anthony Chavez finished in a time of 1:27.26.
The longest race of the day, 500 Free, was swam by Colin Fiechtner has he finished in a time of 5:52.37 for a 6th place finish for the Indians.

In the 200 Free Relay, Oskaloosa was able to take home the 4th place finish as the team of Jack Miller, Jack Dawson, Owen Gordon, and Carson Breon were able to finish in a time of 1:36.68, new school record, and the 10th place finish by Carson Abrahamson, Anthony Chavez, Nicholas Koenig and Jarod Miller who finished in 2:02.12.

Next up was the 100 Back as the Indians sent Jack Miller to the blocks and he was able to come away with the only 1st place finish, Gold Medal, of the day for the team by swimming a time of 1:00.12, new school record.

In the 100 Breast event Jack Dawson was able to finish in a time of 1:10.14 which earned him a 3rd place finish and Carson Abrahamson was able to finish in a time of 1:18.87 for a 5th place finish.

The last event of the day was the 400 Free Relay as the team of Owen Gordon, Colin Fiechtner, Jarod Miller, and Carson Breon was able to finish in a time of 3:50.59 to earn the 5th place finish.

Next meet for the Indians is Thursday as they travel to Grinnell to make up the one that was cancelled earlier due to severe weather.

Van Zante Selected for SEIBA Honor Band

(Fairfield, Iowa) – On Saturday, January 6, approximately 800 students from Southeast Iowa arrived at Fairfield High School in hopes of being accepted to attend the SEIBA Honor Band Festival. Each year, the Southeast Iowa Bandmasters Association sponsors the auditions in Fairfield. This year, there were 28 audition centers, with approximately 400 students auditioning for two junior high bands; over 300 students auditioning for the high school concert band; and about 50 students auditioning for the high school jazz band.

Delanee Van Zante of EBF High School was selected to participate in the SEIBA HS Honor band. High school students prepare two assigned etudes, chromatic and all major scales, and a solo excerpt of their choice. Competition is tough, as a small percentage of the students auditioning are accepted.

“All of the students from EBF that auditioned did an excellent job, demonstrated a commitment to music, and did an outstanding job of representing our school and communities,” said Joe Overton, EBF Band Director, in a news release.

The SEIBA Honor Band Concert will be held at Iowa City West High School on Saturday, January 27, 2018. The students will rehearse with guest conductors during the afternoon and give an evening concert. The junior high bands will present their concert at 5:00 PM followed by the high school bands at 6:00 PM.

Childhood Vaccination Rates Climb in Iowa

(DES MOINES, IA) — Childhood vaccination rates in Iowa are above the national average, according to a new study by the Blue Cross® Blue Shield® Association (BCBSA). A total of more than 74 percent of Iowa children were up-to-date on their CDC-recommended vaccinations, compared to 73.5 percent nationally. Data also shows 70.6 percent of young Wellmark members born in 2010 were fully vaccinated by the age of 2 years and 3 months compared to 78.7 percent of children born in 2013. This is also above the national average of 69 percent and 77 percent, respectively.

“Vaccination is one of the best ways parents can protect infants, children and teens from harmful diseases,” said Dr. Tim Gutshall, Wellmark’s chief medical officer. “Recommendations for which vaccinations are needed and when, can change over time. That’s why it’s important to schedule an annual well-child visit with your family doctor to stay up-to-date on vaccinations and discuss any additional health concerns.”

Missed well-child visits were the largest reason, nationally, for under vaccination, accounting for 62 percent of under-vaccinated cases for children born in 2013. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends 10 visits to the pediatrician by age two.

The study also found in Iowa, 1.1 percent of medical claims analyzed were coded with a parental vaccination refusal from 2010 through 2016, compared to 3.3 percent nationally. Refusal rates climbed nationally from 2.5 percent for children born in 2010 to 4.2 percent for children born in 2013.

This is the 17th study of the Blue Cross Blue Shield: The Health of America Report® series, a collaboration between BCBSA and Blue Health Intelligence®, which uses a market-leading claims database to uncover key trends and insights into health care affordability and access to care.
