The Statesmen men’s golf team will look to build off a great inaugural season in its new conference and possibly take another step closer to a league title as it hits the links in 2016-2017.

William Penn placed fourth out of 11 teams at last year’s Heart of America Athletic Conference Championships, and Head Coach Steve Tucker has a lot of talent returning.

Frederik Lundsgaard (Jr., Jebjerg, Denmark, History/Government) is at the front of the class with a 75.8 stroke average last year, while Brandon Dizon (Sr., San Leandro, Calif., Sociology) (77.5 avg.), Clay Tucker (Sr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Elementary Education) (79.1 avg.), Zach Swink (Sr., Burlington, Iowa, Sociology) (81.6 avg.), and Kyle Hashimoto (Sr., Acampo, Calif., Exercise Science) (81.9 avg.) also earned varsity experience last year.

Fellow returners Peter Frederiksen (Jr., Hornslet, Denmark, Mechanical Engineering), Rory Schafer (Jr., Solwezi, Zambia, Mechanical Engineering), Cade Hartman (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev., Business Management), and Bradley Hamilton (So., Earlham, Iowa, Physical Education) will battle several newcomers to bolster the team.

Zachary Chegmidden (Fr., England) and Sebastian Rulis (Jr., Denmark, Business Management) are coming from Europe this fall, while Skylar Cunningham (So., Knoxville, Iowa, History/Government) is venturing just a few miles down Highway 92.  Beau Squires (Sr., Conrad, Iowa, History/Government and Sociology) is also back on the Statesmen roster after years away.

Schedule/Conference

The fall season begins on August 28-29 as WPU hosts the Midwest Intercollegiate Open in Moravia, while seven additional tournaments will fill up the rest of the schedule.  The Statesmen will also host the William Penn 27 Shootout in September and the William Penn Classic in October.  The NAIA Preview, consisting of some of the best teams in the nation, will wrap up the fall.

2015-2016 national qualifiers Grand View and Mount Mercy will likely serve as favorites to claim the Heart crown, but Tucker can envision his program being a real threat next spring.

Short Chase In Oskaloosa Ends When Suspect Surrenders

Oskaloosa, Iowa – On Sunday afternoon, Mahaska County Deputy Brent De Ronde, according to affidavits submitted to the Mahaska County District Court state observed Clint Hornick of Kirkville, Iowa operating a motor vehicle on north 5th street.

“I turned to follow the vehicle and the defendant began to travel at a quick pace. The defendant made several quick turns and it appeared that the defendant was attempting to create distance and separation between him and myself,” states De Ronde in the affidavit.

“I was behind the defendant in the 300 block of north 6th street. I observed the defendant make a right hand turn onto C Avenue East from North 6th Street. The defendant did not come to a complete stop at the stop sign. I turned onto C Avenue East behind the defendant and activated my emergency lights. The defendant continued east on C Avenue and then turned south on North 9th Street. The defendant then turned left on B Avenue east. At this point I was directly behind the defendant and turned on my audible siren. The defendant turned northbound on North 11th Street and then made a right hand turn on C Avenue East. The defendant traveled approximately 1 block and then turned into the Greenway Apartments. The defendant slowed and then exited the apartments and continued east on C Avenue East. The defendant then began to travel northbound on North Park Avenue.”

“At this time, the defendant sped up and began to travel at a high rate of speed. I observed that I was traveling 61 miles per hour on my patrol units certified speedometer while I was in the 1800 block of North Park Avenue and the defendant’s vehicle was pulling away from me. The defendant continued on North Park until it turned to gravel. The defendant then slowed his vehicle and stopped. The defendant was apprehended.”

“The defendant was identified by Iowa drivers license and I was informed that the defendant had a valid arrest warrant in Mahaska County for probation violation. The defendant was transported to the Mahaska County Jail, where custody of him was turned over to jail staff”.

Hornick was held on a cash only bond of $2,000.00.

Hornick is facing charges of” Eluding – Speed over 25 mph over the limit. Other charges include Fail to obey stop sign, failure to provide proof of financial liability, and speeding.

It should be noted a criminal charge is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Truck Series Race To The Chase Moves On To Michigan

The 2016 season marks the first time the “Chase” format that’s been used by the Sprint Cup Series the past two seasons will also be implemented in the Camping World Truck Series and there are just three races remaining before the eight-driver field is set, including Saturday’s Careers for Veterans 200 at Michigan International Speedway.  If the post-season began today, The Chase Grid would include rookies Christopher Bell and William Byron, who are teammates at Kyle Busch Motorsports … two-time champion Matt Crafton, John Hunter Nemechek, Johnny Sauter, Ben Kennedy, Daniel Hemric and Timothy Peters, who leads rookie Cole Custer by twenty-nine points for what would be the final “playoff” spot.  After Saturday’s stop at M-I-S, remaining races in the regular season will be run at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park and Chicagoland Speedway.  The Chase will open September 24th in Loudon, New Hampshire.

Statesmen Fall 3-1 To Grace (Neb.)

Omaha, Neb.–A couple of tight sets could have gone the other way, but unfortunately they did not and the William Penn volleyball team came up short against Grace 3-1 in non-conference play Tuesday.

WPU (0-4) fell by scores of 23-25, 18-25, 25-20, 22-25.  The squad was outhit .176-.100, including posting a .135 mark in the second set.

The visitors fought to the bitter end, but failed to overcome 33 attacking errors (both sides tallied 51 kills).  Shawni Wills (Sr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Biology) had an efficient evening, leading the navy and gold with 13 kills and a .346 attack clip.

Savanna Hartman (Sr., Morgan Hill, Calif., Psychology) was also in double figures with 11 winners, while Claire Simmons (So., Williamsburg, Iowa, Psychology) and Lilly Martinez (Jr., Oakland, Calif., Psychology) just missed the mark with nine kills apiece.

Kathleen Steffen (So., Vinton, Iowa, Biology) topped the setting duo with a double-double of 29 assists and 16 digs, while Haley Smith (So., Adrian, Mich., Elementary Education) added 15 helpers.

Ashley Miller (So., Kalona, Iowa, Exercise Science) paced the defensive effort with 35 digs, while Nesreen Iskandrani (Fr., Lawrence, Kan., History/Government) finished with three block assists.

In addition to her hitting tally, Simmons was also productive at the service line (three aces) and at the defensive net (one solo block, two block assists).

“We are learning, but it is going to take baby steps,” Head Coach Jennifer Carlson said.  “We are making too many errors at this point and that is hurting us as we try to finish games.  We are close, so I know we can do this, but we need to buckle down and continue to remove those unforced errors.”

Next Up: William Penn takes a week off before returning to Oskaloosa for its home opener next Tuesday, hosting Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) in non-conference action at 7 p.m.

With a dynasty being built, the task of reloading and remaining a major player on the national scene awaits the William Penn women’s golf team in 2016-2017.

Three consecutive league crowns, including winning the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championships in their debut season, the Statesmen are primed for even more success this year.  They will, however, have to accomplish this success without their best player as two-time NAIA All-American Demi Coertze has graduated.  Do not fret, though, as Head Coach Nik Rule and his staff did a tremendous job in retention and recruiting.  In addition to a load of returners, a set of strong newcomers should help to produce continued winning ways.

Four all-Heart performers are back on the roster, headlined by Elise Warne (So., Melbourne, Australia, Exercise Science) who owned an 82.4 stroke average in her freshman campaign.  Miranda Keeler (Jr., Plattsmouth, Neb., Communications) (83.1 avg.), Jodi Saito (Sr., Mililani, Hawaii, Education) (83.1 avg.), and Courtney Cunningham (Sr., Muskogee, Okla., Computer Science) (83.8 avg.) earned post-season recognition last season as well and the entire crew will make a formidable quartet at the top of the lineup.

Brooke Fletcher (Jr., Atlantic, Iowa, Business Management), who had an 84.0 stroke average, came on strong at the end of 2015-2016 and will pace another talented quartet who are all poised to fight for varsity slots.  Helene Larsen (So., Viborg, Denmark, Business Management) (83.9 avg.) has been outstanding in the preseason and will actually be at the top of the lineup when the season starts.  Megan Rhoads (So., Schertz, Texas, Psychology) (84.7 avg.) and Alyssa Kerry (So., Bend, Ore., Communications) (86.7 avg.) are also expected to improve in their sophomore campaigns.

Fellow returners Jordan Postma (Jr., Marion, Iowa, Biology), Sofie Lund (So., Herning, Denmark, Psychology), Tiffany Duhon (So., Lafayette, La, Elementary Education), and Aramina Flores (Jr., Corpus Christi, Texas, History/Government) will add depth to the program.

The team’s talent pool does not end with the returners as freshmen Brittany Evans (Fernley, Nev.), Deanna Peiffer (Washington, Iowa, Public Accounting), and Alexis Guimaraes (San Ramon, Calif., Psychology) are coming off incredible prep careers and will be in the mix immediately.

Schedule/Conference

The Statesmen host two events as part of a seven-tournament fall schedule, including the Midwest Intercollegiate Open in August and the William Penn Classic in October.  WPU will also leave the state four times to face some of the best teams in the nation.  Odds-on favorites to defend their Heart title, the navy and gold will likely be tested again by perennial contenders Grand View and Baker.
