Oskaloosa Prepares For #1 Carlisle In State Title Game

Oskaloosa will have the rare opportunity to win a state championship when the softball team faces #1 Carlisle Friday afternoon. The matchup will be difficult, but there are ways that Osky can pull off the upset.

Oskaloosa comes into the matchup at 29-7 on the season, and have rolled to the Class 4A State Championship with a 3-1 win over Perry and a 7-1 win over Fairfield. Osky’s offense has had odd moments, but have done what they needed to do to give ace pitcher Alexis Groet plenty of support. The two runs she has allowed has been on solo home runs, but the opposition has yet to put together a sustained threat against her.
While the sailing has been smooth for Osky, Carlisle had to scratch and claw to get into the state title game. They dominated unranked Charles City, 12-0, in a five-inning run-rule victory in the quarterfinals, but had to survive a 9-8 battle against conference opponent Boone. Carlisle even had to lift senior ace Gabby Schnathorst for a couple of innings before bringing her back to finish the game out.
That game can serve as a confidence booster for Osky, as Carlisle came into the state tourney batting .439 with a .490 on-base percentage. The Wildcats are stacked from top to bottom, and they have won 28 straight games. They haven’t lost a game since June 9th against previous #1 Winterset.
Carlisle’s numbers are overwhelming, and their pedigree is top-notch. Head Coach Jim Flaws won his 1,000th game as the Carlisle coach with their semifinal win over Boone. In Oskaloosa’s first trip to state in 2014, it was Flaws’s Wildcats who knocked the Indians out in the quarterfinals.
While the numbers on paper favor the top-ranked Wildcats, Oskaloosa has a dominant strikeout pitcher in Groet, and an offense that has been clicking, and it will be interesting to see if the Indians can achieve their dream of becoming the Class 4A State Softball Champions.
You can hear the game on 99.5 FM/740 AM KMZN, the KMZN mobile app, and radiokmzn.com. The first pitch is scheduled for 12:27 PM, and the pregame will start around 12:05 PM.

Craig Morgan Speaks About The Loss Of His Son

Craig Morgan has given his first public statement about the loss of his 19-year-old son Jerry Greer, who passed away following a boating accident on July 10. In a message posted on Facebook Wednesday afternoon (7/20), Morgan called the loss of his son “the hardest thing we have ever had to endure as a family.” Craig then expressed his gratitude to all the people who’ve supported them during this difficult time, including everyone who assisted in the massive search for Jerry after he went missing as well as those in the music and outdoor communities who’ve expressed their sentiments.

·       Craig then wrapped up the message by saying, “Jerry may be gone from this earth, and we will miss him every day, but his spirit will live on in our hearts. We will find peace knowing that God has a bigger plan, and that one day, we’ll be reunited with him again in Heaven. John 3:16.”

Osky Softball Advances To The Championship Game

The old saying is “same story different day.” However if the story continued the same as the previous day Osky Indians would advance to the state championship game. (Spoiler Alert) They Would! With Groet taking the circle once again, the Indians girls had to feel confident that her right arm could take them anywhere. And she was just as good on this day.

After Groet served up two scoreless innings, the Indians would strike first with a run coming from a place you wouldn’t expect it, a freshmen designated player. Ashley Kindley knocked in Alexis Vroegh with two out in the bottom half of the second. After another scoreless frame by Groet, Osky would add two more on back to back to back doubles by Silliman, Jones and Miller.
That would be all they would need on this day. As Groet settled in only allowing one run, a solo shot by Kenady Waugh in the top of the 6th. The Oskaloosa girls answered back with 4 runs of their on in the bottom half with two of those runs knocked in by the freshman Kindley. All but making the lead unreadable for the Trojans of Fairfield. Groet would shut the door sending the Indians to their first ever softball championship game.
You can listen to that game on 99.5 KMZN. First pitch is scheduled for 12:27pm with the pregame starting roughly around 12:05pm. The game will also be available streaming onradiokmzn.com and on the KMZN mobile app.

Kyle Larson Takes The Aspen Dental Eldora Dirt Derby at Eldora Speedway

Kyle Larson came from a lap down to win Wednesday night’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Aspen Dental Eldora Dirt Derby at Eldora Speedway. Larson drove the No. 24 DC Solar GMS Motorsports Silverado to his first victory in three tries in the annual summer visit to the historic dirt track. However, it was not smooth sailing to the checkered flag for Larson who was penalized for intentionally causing a caution on lap fifty-two when he spun after a tire went down. He went a lap down but was able to make it up and charged into the lead with thirty-two laps to go. Last year’s winner Christopher Bell made a late charge but made contact with the wall in the closing laps and would take the checkered flag in second. Rico Abreu, who also experienced problems earlier in the race, charged back to finish third. Jake Griffin and Tyler Reddick rounded out the top-five. Dirt late model driver Bobby Pierce looked as if he might pull off the upset, leading one hundred and two of the one hundred and fifty lap race, but experienced clutch and transmission problems on the final restart, eventually spinning out trying to pass Larson with only a few laps to go. Pierce would end the night a disappointing twenty-fifth. Pierce, Reddick, Ken Schrader, JR Heffner and Ben Rhodes won preliminary qualifying races while Cody Coughlin and Abreu made their way into the feature by finishing first and second in the last chance race in a night that was filled with action from start to finish.

Indians ‘Bear’ Down, Advance to Semifinals

They call her ‘Bear,’ a nickname she lived up to on Wednesday night as the junior hurler pitched viciously at the opening game of the Iowa State Softball Tournament. After committing two errors helping the first two Jayettes in the Perry order in the top of the first inning, Alexis Groet mauled down the next 16 batters she faced. A staggering 10 of those 16 Perry hitters went down a victim of the strikeout.
Groet eventually lost the no-hitter and the shut out all in one swing when sophomore Johanna Diw sent a deep shot over the left center field fence. But that was all the damage the Jayettes could muster as ‘Bear’ settled right back in, mauling down the rest of Perry hitters.
Aubrey Miller got the scoring going for the Indians with a solo shot to dead center in the bottom of the first. Her second on the season. Miller wound up 3 for 3 adding two singles and scoring another run in the bottom of the third along with Anna Jones when Alexis Westercamp shot a two run single through the left side of the infield. The 2, 3 and 4 hitters for Osky went a combined 8 for 9 on the day accounted for all the of the Indian runs as they downed thwarted the Jayettes hopes of advancing in the tournament with a final score of 3-1.
The Osky girls did have some base running gaffs as more opportunities presented themselves with runners in scoring positions and less that two outs. A couple of misinterpreted signs and as well as poor base running costs them at least a few insurance runs. It did not wind up hurting them in the end, but they will need all the runs they can get when Indians take on the Trojans of Fairfield today at 1pm. A rivalry of two area teams that has went the way of the Trojans in the two previous contests. Osky will hope to advance to the championship game on Friday but will have to “bear down” on a team that has recently had their number.
You can hear all the action on 99.5 KMZN with the pregame show starting at 12:45pm. The game will also be broadcast on the website at radiokmzn.com and the Radio KMZN mobile app.

Pella, Pleasantville Punch Tickets To State Baseball Tournament

Wednesday night was a busy night for many area summer sports teams, and the Mahaska Zone Network listening area had teams representing all four boys classes looking to get to the State Baseball Tournament at Principal Park in Des Moines.

The first game took place in the early evening and saw the Fairfield Trojans face Solon in the Class 3A Substate 5 Final. Fairfield was the solid favorite, but fell by a final of 6-4. Solon is a surprising team to head to the state baseball tournament with a record of 21-20. Fairfield’s season comes to a close at 27-8.
In the later games, all of the Mahaska Zone Network listening area was focused on the Class 3A Substate 6 Final between Pella and Oskaloosa. The game was a tight one all the way, with Pella scratching across a run in the middle innings to take a 1-0 lead. They would extend that lead to 2-0 late, and Osky would be unable to score against Iowa commit Grant Judkins, who held Osky scoreless throughout the ballgame.
Sophomore Nick Harrington kept Osky in the game after drawing the start, throwing five solid innings of five-hit ball. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough, as the Indians could not figure out Judkins, and only logged two hits in the game offensively.
Oskaloosa finishes the 2016 season with a record of 24-11, and the loss ends the baseball career of Joe Sterner, who was instrumental in the success the Indians had this year.
Pella goes back to the state tournament, and should be rewarded with a high seed in the Class 3A bracket.
In Class 1A, BGM fell to #2 Don Bosco of Gilbertville, 3-0, in the Substate 6 Final. BGM’s season comes to an end at 23-8. Don Bosco enters state at 34-4.
In Class 2A, Pleasantville surprised Van Meter with a 1-0 win in a thriller to get to state for the second straight year. Pleasantville enters state with a 28-9 record as a longshot contender for the Class 2A title.
In Class 4A, Ottumwa lost in heartbreaking fashion to top-seed Urbandale in the Substate 6 Final, 2-1. Ottumwa scored late to take a 1-0 lead over the hosts from Urbandale, but gave up the tying run on a wild pitch and allowed a walk-off single with two outs to end the ballgame. If the Bulldogs would have won, it would have been their third road upset to get to state. Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be, as Ottumwa finishes their season at 22-19. Urbandale enters state at 29-10.
We will follow the progress of Pella and Pleasantville at the State Baseball Tournament at Principal Park in Des Moines. You can see all the stories and scores on our website,radiokmzn.com.

Works Of Art Fill Up Fair Hall

OSKALOOSA — The Exhibit Hall at the Southern Iowa Fair was a hub of activity on Tuesday.

Just past the horticulture exhibits was a section set up to display crafts and works of art in the Care Facility Open Class.

“We have a lot of exhibits,” said Judge Peggy Wright, pointing out a lit Christmas tree made out of jewelry made by Fran Ferguson, 86; as well as
handmade afghans, as well as projects made out of tin cans, ceramic paintings, artwork, yarn and embroidery projects, jewelry, woodworking
and rugs. “As you can see, we have just a little bit of everything.”

Paintings were displayed, some original works, some paint-bynumber.

“Adult coloring has been very popular this year,” said Wright. “And it makes it so nice for those people because that’s something they can do and it turns out nice for them.”

Wright tapped the glass counter of a display filled with exhibits, including jewelry and china painting.

“Look at this this 3D puzzle,” she said. Eightyfive-year-old Bob Curry, from Homestead, put together the Eiffel Tower puzzle, which comes apart in thirds. “Isn’t that something?” Also in the display was a set of dominoes crafted by Melvin Bloem, 95, made out of wood from a fallen tree at his farm.

It wasn’t an easy task to judge the items. “It is difficult,” said Wright. “Now some of the things, I did judge last week for the care centers. I went around to the care centers (Homestead, Northern Mahaska Specialty Care, Crystal Heights and Oskaloosa Care Center) and that really was nice for them because they could see their projects being judged, and we just had a lot of fun.” Imagine the Possibilities also had entries in the open class.

Wright spoke with enthusiasm about each piece, clearly enjoying her job as judge. “It was great,” said Wright. “And it’s so important that these people get recognition for what they’re doing.”
