Old Dominion Debuting on NBC’s Today Show

Old Dominion will make their national morning show debut on NBC’s Today Show with two performances on Monday, December 21st. The band has been tapped to perform their two-week number one debut smash single, “Break Up With Him” from their new album, Meat And Candy, as well as their highly anticipated follow-up single, “Snapback.”

William Penn Wins Top-15 Battle

Oskaloosa–It was a three-man show for the Statesmen men’s basketball team as it pushed its winning streak to a dozen with a 92-76 Heart of America Athletic Conference victory over #13 MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.).

With its win and losses to Graceland and Culver-Stockton, #6 WPU (12-1, 5-0 Heart) now owns a full two-game lead entering the second half of the league slate.

Both sides shot 43.5{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b}, but a dominant 51-34 rebounding edge helped the victors to seven more shots; an 18-8 advantage on the offensive glass led to a 14-9 mark in second-chance points.  The navy and gold won the three-point (9-5) and free-throw (23-17) categories as well.

After the teams exchanged one bucket each in the opening minute, the Pioneers (8-3, 3-2 Heart) took control to lead 25-14 midway through the first half.  A 14-3 WPU run tied the game, but MNU answered right back to make it 40-32 with only 1:13 left until halftime.  Fortunately, back-to-back three-pointers in the final seconds by Jessie Pernell (Sr., North Augusta, Ga., Physical Education) and Dondre Alexander (Jr., Iowa City, Iowa, Physical Education) helped get the home team within one entering the locker rooms at 40-39.

Neither side could force much separation (biggest lead was five by MNU) early in the second session as the game was tied for the seventh and final time at 55-55 with 12:48 to go.  The Statesmen then showed what so many have seen over the last 12 contests by producing a 19-5 run and rolling to the victory.

Pernell and Alexander each made nine field goals and combined for WPU’s nine trifectas as both players posted 29 points.  Alexander also assisted four times and blocked two shots, while he and Pernell joined Steven Roundtree (Sr., Jacksonville, Fla., Physical Education) with two steals.

Brady Burford (Sr., Chicago, Ill., Physical Education) was the most efficient Statesmen on the court, though, going 10-for-13 from the field for 25 points.  He also pulled down 11 rebounds for a double-double.

Roundtree added six points, while Jeff Drew (Sr., Little Rock, Ark., Sociology) was William Penn’s best bench player; he did not score any points but did tally eight rebounds.

“This was the perfect way to finish the first half of our season,” Head Coach John Henry said.  “Our rebounding effort was amazing to watch and, in my opinion, wore out our opponents.”

Next Up: William Penn is off nearly a month, traveling to Canton, Mo. on January 6 to face Culver-Stockton in Heart action at 7:30 p.m.

A Feast For All Senses

OSKALOOSA—Modern high school students turned the Oskaloosa Middle School gym into a Rennaisance-era dining hall, complete with music and skits.
The Madrigal Dinner, which was hosted at the Oskaloosa Middle School gymnasium, is an event that has taken place for 13 years. There were around 120 high school students involved.

“It has grown so much over the years,” said vocal music director Chris Weinreich. “We started this with just 15-20 kids and performed in a small place for one night, now we have a gymnasium full.”

Members of the Concert, Chamber, and Madrigal choirs were joined by the Chamber orchestra to provide an evening of entertainment.

The students dressed up in “Renaissance attire and [performed] funny skits this year. There’s always something going on. Trumpet heralds usher
people in; everybody’s announced as they come in and go to their tables,” said Weinreich.

“It’s a whole bunch of stuff packed into the guise of a fundraiser.”

In past years, the money raised has gone to offset a trip to Chicago with the orchestra. This year, funds will likely go toward purchasing new choir robes. A variety of musical styles were performed.

“Thomas Morley pieces, just your real, legitimate, time period correct madrigals; and silly songs done in madrigal style,” said Weinreich. “And there
are modern tunes that we do. There’s part of a skit that says ‘I wonder what music will be like in 500-600 years’ and it’s a warp to the future [today]. It’s as much a capella as possible.”

Those in attendance enjoyed a feast including an appetizer, soup, pulled pork, potatoes, green beans and chocolate cake; along with wassail, water, and coffee.

The Madrigal Dinner has received some excellent feedback over the years. “It’s consistently ‘wow, I can’t believe it’s a high school performance,’” said Weinreich. “Everybody has been wowed by the amount of work the kids put in. It’s amazing the kids can do that. The feedback has been it’s
a professional-grade show. The kids get a good experience putting something like that on.”
The performers were dressed in Renaissance attire, with the gymnasium decorated to match. The audience enjoyed the evening’s festivities.

“The amount of talent we have here in the high school is unsurpassed. I’ve been here a long time, ten years, and I am always impressed at what Oskaloosa has to offer their young musicians. We have a fantastic band, choir and orchestra program. With a school this size, the kids can do everything; all of those [previously mentioned] and sports,” said Weinreich.

“It’s important for the community to go out and see what our young people are doing.”
