Iowa Officials: Half Of All Contracts Signed For Medicaid

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa health officials say half of all potential contracts for Medicaid services have been signed ahead of the state’s switch to privatized care on Jan. 1.
The Iowa Department of Human Services says the four private companies taking over the state’s Medicaid program have signed a total of more than 62,000 contracts with medical providers.
Department spokeswoman Amy Lorentzen McCoy said Tuesday each company can secure nearly 30,000 contracts, which means there are just under 120,000 contracts available. She says the figures show just over half of all potential contracts have been signed.
Medicaid provides care to low-income people including children and disabled individuals. State officials, including Gov. Terry Branstad, say the privatization move will offer better care and save money. Some lawmakers have criticized the timeline for the switch.

Tuifua On AFCA NAIA’s First Team

Oskaloosa–Hea Tuifua (Sr., Salt Lake City, Utah, Industrial Technology) ended his collegiate career with the best recognition a small-college lineman could receive as the AFCA NAIA Coaches’ All-America Teams were announced Tuesday.

William Penn’s senior center collected a First-Team nod and becomes the 22nd All-American in Head Coach Todd Hafner’s tenure and the 41st in program history.  Tuifua was a Second-Team selection last year, joining an even more prestigious group as only the 10th individual at WPU to earn multiple All-American awards.  He is the first since Steven Dawley (first team in 2008 and 2009) to earn at least two accolades from the AFCA.

Tuifua helped William Penn to a 7-4 record (3-2 Heart) and a nation’s-best 3,874 total rushing yards, good for 352.2 yards per game.  Overall, the Statesmen averaged 448.1 total yards per contest, ranking them 13th in the NAIA.  William Penn eclipsed the 500-yard mark on four occasions, including a high of 660 yards against Avila (Mo.).

The navy and gold were also 14th in the NAIA with 37.5 points per outing.

The American Football Coaches Association has selected an All-American team since 1945.  In 2013, the NAIA Football Coaches Association and the National Administrative Council voted to have a second team also honored.

Churches Battle The Christmastime Blues

OSKALOOSA — Not everyone feels holly and jolly during the holidays. First Christian Church and St. Paul Congregational United Church of Christ recognize that personal conflict or the loss of a loved one can cause Christmas to be a painful time. That realization led the two organizations to come together to host a “Blue Christmas” service beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church, 119 A Ave. East.

“This time of year can be a very difficult time for some people,” said Mike Omundson, pastor of First Christian Church. “This event will give those struggling the opportunity to come together and to feel supported in their time of sadness, whatever the cause might be. It’s really just a way for people to express their grief while getting that support they need.”

The constant refrain on the radio and television in shopping malls and churches about the happiness of the season, about getting together with family and friends, reminds many people of what they have lost or have never had, resulting in a case of the “blues.”

The anguish of broken relationships, the insecurity of unemployment, the weariness of ill health, the pain of isolation — all these often cause individuals to feel very alone in the midst of the celebrating and spending.

Omundson explained that the unique service gives those in need a space to acknowledge their sadness or concern before becoming uplifted.

“We hope that this let’s people know they are not alone in the midst of whatever they are going through,” he explained. This “nonthreatening” event is
open to the public and will feature readings of passages that are sure to offer comfort.

Although the United Church of Christ has offered a “Blue Christmas” service in the past, it has not seen the attendance event planners were hoping for.

With this year’s partnership, Omundson says he is hopeful the event will grow and bring happiness to several more community members. Often times individuals who feel down during the holiday season need encouragement to live the days ahead, according to the pastor.

For these reasons the host churches invite everyone interested to attend the service to hear prayers, scripture and music that “acknowledges
God’s presence is for those who mourn, for those who struggle – and that God’s word comes to shine light into darkness.”

For for information, contact First Christian Church of Oskaloosa at 641-673-4671 between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Under The Radar Music: John Hiatt

Here we go again kids… With another favorite “alt-country” artist of mine, John Hiatt!

As an artist, you may not be familiar with John Hiatt, but it’s a pretty sure bet you’ve heard his songs. Bonnie Raitt’s “A Thing Called Love”, Suzy Bogguss’ “Drive South”, and Jeff Healey’s “Angel Eyes” are just a few.

John Hiatt grew up in Indianapolis, and found music after losing both his brother and his father by the age of 13. He was signed to the Epic label in 1973, and achieved greater (albeit still not mainstream) success in the late 1980s and 1990s.

Hiatt is a superb and often very amusing showman. Here’s a rockin’ live performance of “Memphis In The Meantime” with slide guitar legend Sonny Landreth:

And here’s “Something Wild” from his great “Austin City Limits” concert as featured on PBS:

And just in case you’re in the mood for some stone-cold real country, Hiatt can do that, too:

Next week, it’s a group who got their name from Hee-Haw. See ya next week! – Bobbo 🙂
