#1 Oskaloosa Softball Squeaks Out Win in Pella

The Oskaloosa softball team moved to 17-0 by squeaking past Pella 2-1. The Indians took advantage of two Pella errors in the second inning to score the first run of the game. Josie Bunnell laid down a successful squeeze bunt to score Aubrey Miller. Pella would answer in the third to tie the game heading into the later innings. In the fifth inning, Oskaloosa got a leadoff walk by Bethany Rowley, who was then sacrificed to second by Kylee Silliman. Alexis Westercamp would single, moving Rowley to third, which set the table for Aubrey Miller’s RBI single, scoring what turned out to be the gamewinning run.

Miller was the offensive standout, going 4 for 4 with that RBI and a run scored. Oskaloosa overcame leaving 9 runners on base to run their record to 17-0 and conference record to 4-0.

The top-ranked Indians will get tonight off, and will play against Albia on the road Friday. That contest is the backend of a freshman-JV-Varsity tripleheader, which starts at 4:30. The varsity game should start around 7:30 PM.

Though the film was panned upon its release, it gave Dolly two top ten country singles: “Tennessee Homesick Blues” and “God Won’t Get You.”

Oskaloosa Baseball Struggles in Loss to #2 Pella

The Osky baseball team entered Pella with a 10-1 record and had a shot to create a three-way tie at the top of the conference. But the second ranked Little Dutch had other ideas. Pella would score three runs early in the first, taking advantage of a couple of Oskaloosa defensive mistakes. The Indians were in the hole to a team that has yet to allow more than two runs in any game this year. Junior starting pitcher Grant Judkins for the Little Dutch struck out 11 and only allowed four baserunners in a dominant six-inning outing. The Little Dutch would end the game with a five-run sixth to reach the run-rule at 10-0 to move to 12-0 on the year.

The Indians are still in good shape in third in the conference, sitting at 10-2 overall, and will have a great opportunity to bounce back against a good squad on Friday. They travel to Knoxville for a varsity doubleheader. Knoxville is ranked #6 this week in the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association top ten rankings in Class 3A. The Panthers lost in Oskaloosa 8-4 earlier this year, and are eyeing revenge against their former conference mate.

We will have that broadcast for you on Friday on the Mahaska Zone Network, 99.5 FM and AM 740 KMZN and on kboeradio.com. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 PM, and our pregame will begin around 5:15.

NASCAR Announces New Aerodynamic Rules Package for Kentucky

NASCAR’s executive vice president and chief racing development officer Steve O’Donnell announced Tuesday that Sprint Cup teams will have a new aerodynamic rules package when they head to Kentucky Speedway for next month’s Quaker State 400. In an effort to reduce down-force, the new rules include a smaller rear spoiler and a new front splitter. In addition to the new aero package, the tires supplied by Goodyear will provide the drivers with more grip. The teams will be given a full day to test with the new rules on Wednesday, July 8, prior to the race weekend.

For now, the rules change is only for the race at Kentucky on July 11, but O’Donnell said that the changes could also come to other tracks this season if the changes prove successful. “We want to see more lead changes on the racetrack,” O’Donnell said. “We’ll evaluate that and a number of different factors coming out of Kentucky, see what we can learn and implement down the road.” There have been 302 lead changes this season, compared to 396 to this point last year and the hope with this package is more competition and increased lead changes. O’Donnell maintained that NASCAR is committed to putting the best racing on the track and that the work would not stop with this announcement.

Top Ranked Indians Survive Two Against Des Moines Hoover to Remain Unbeaten

The Oskaloosa softball team played Des Moines Hoover on the road last night and received a challenge in both games of the doubleheader from the Class 5A school.

Hoover has a losing record, but plays mainly large school opponents, and showed they were no slouches against the top-ranked team in Class 4A. In game one of the doubleheader, Oskaloosa went up early, but had to hold on for dear life as Alexis Groet had to work through several jams in the game. Oskaloosa scored two runs in the fifth that would prove to be the deciders, as Aubrey Miller and Peyton Zickefoose knocked in a couple of runs. Oskaloosa stranded 11 runners in the game, and Hoover stranded 10. Miller and Josie Bunnell were the offensive standouts, as neither was retired at the plate and had a double. Senior Bethany Rowley continued her hot hitting, crushing her second home run of the season.

The second game was every bit the same challenge, as both pitchers worked through the first seven innings scoreless to force extra. In the eighth inning, Oskaloosa got a double from Rowley, a double from Kylee Silliman to drive her in, and then a two-run homer from Alexis Westercamp to give the Indians a 3-0 lead. Silliman would hold off the Husky rally in the bottom of the inning to get a 3-1 win and keep Oskaloosa unbeaten at 16-0.
It was the first game in six days for the Indians since beating Dallas Center-Grimes last Wednesday, and there were definitely moments that the team didn’t seem as sharp. Osky committed ten errors in the two games, which is more than they committed in the first 14 games combined. But, even with that adversity, the team managed to respond and get themselves another couple of wins.

The softball team is in action on the road at Pella tonight in a single varsity game. That begins at 7:30 PM tonight.
