Osky Baseball Collects 28 hits, Sweeps Norwalk

The Oskaloosa baseball team had themselves a great night in a sweep of Norwalk at home last night in a make-up doubleheader from Monday.

Osky was originally scheduled to face Albia on the road, but that game was nixed in favor of the conference doubleheader. Norwalk came to Osky still trying to figure out how to replace their star player Chris Comito, who is no longer with the squad after being drafted in the 15th round of the Major League Baseball Draft last week by the Chicago White Sox.

The first game had some back and forth action early, as TJ Boyle struggled through the third on the mound and the Indians saw themselves down by the score of 3-2. But the team responded, plating five runs in the bottom of the third to take control, and Boyle would settle back in and only allow one more run the rest of the way in a five-hit complete game.

In game two, the Indians jumped on Norwalk early, plating 5 unearned runs. They would cruise behind Peyton Crouse to a 10-0 six inning run-rule win. The two wins move the Indians to an impressive 10-1 record this year.Offensively, there was some shuffling in the order from Coach Clint Gingerich. Bennett Spry came into the doubleheader leading the team in batting average, so he got bumped up to the leadoff spot, dropping Mitchell Schaffner to the #2 hole looking to get him going. That worked to perfection, as Schaffner went 6 for 8 on the night.

Colton Swanson and Peyton Crouse both had big nights at the plate as well, as all spots in the Oskaloosa order drove in runs or got multiple hits in the doubleheader. The Indians had 28 total hits in the two games.

The Indians will be back in action tonight, assuming Mother Nature cooperates. This time, they’ll be an underdog against #2 Pella. The Little Dutch have gotten off to a great start this year, continuing their dominance in Class 3A boys’ sports since football’s state title. Pella is 11-0 so far this year, but have played tighter games against some opponents that Oskaloosa has dominated. The big battle is a single varsity game tonight, with the first pitch around 7:30 PM.

You can hear that game on the Mahaska Zone Network, 99.5 FM and AM 740 KMZN and on kboeradio.com. Our pregame will start around 7:15.

Toby Keith Being Inducted Into Songwriters Hall Of Fame This Week

It’s a big week for Toby Keith, who will be inducted into the songwriters hall of fame on Thursday (6/18). Toby tells News OK, “My 60 or 70 awards I have at my house, you put ’em all together and melted ’em into one trophy, that’s still not as big as this trophy. This is my ultimate trophy. There’ll never be anything you can give that’s bigger than this.”

Street Vacation Item Highlights Intense Night for Oskaloosa City Council

A road vacation took center stage at an intense meeting of the Oskaloosa City Council Monday evening.

The item on the agenda in question involves the vacation and sale of 2nd Avenue East between South 7th Street and South 8th Street to Central Reformed Church located at 815 2nd Avenue East in Oskaloosa. The church has submitted plans for an expansion, which would involve adding several parking lot space in spots of land that they already own either on that block or nearby. The church has seen a boom of growth in recent years, and is hoping to capitalize on that by expanding their church to give their congregation all the proper amenities, like a functional fellowship hall, which now has to be used for the large Sunday School program every Sunday.

The public hearing on this item sparked great debate from neighbors nearby who believe closing the road is a bad idea for many reasons and produced a petition with over 35 signatures. There were also plenty of people who spoke on behalf of the church and of the neighborhood from a business standpoint, which all were in favor of having the church remain in their current location, just expanding to fit its growing population.

The risk involved for the church, is that if this plan is nixed, they would have to look at moving to a new location, likely on the edge of town, like the Church of the Nazarene when they built their new facility.

After lengthy debate on the topic, and several views shared from the City Council and from the public, council member Doug Yates suggested they wait until later to vote, since he had told people that there would be three readings of this. Council member Aaron Ver Steeg was bothered that there was not three readings. After more discussion about when to pull the trigger and vote, the council decided by a 6-1 vote to push the item back to the July 20th meeting before making a decision so the rest of the public could have their say. Jason Van Zetten was the lone vote against that notion, saying the public deserved a vote that night.

In other business, the council unanimously approved another $50,000 going toward the Forest Cemetery Association. This helps their financial stability, on top of the $150,000 that have already been given the last couple of years.

The council also voted unanimously to pull the trigger on an agreement with RDG Planning and Design, who will complete a full design of the corridor on A Avenue and Market Street. This will cost $44,620 to complete, and then after that comes back to the council, they may start to implement parts of that design and create ordinances to keep the downtown area clean. This topic was discussed in full during an hour-long study session prior to the regular council meeting.

The next meeting of the Oskaloosa City Council is scheduled for Monday, July 6th, at 6 PM in the City Council Chambers in City Hall in Oskaloosa.

Board of Supervisors Hear Recreation Presentation

The Mahaska County Board of Supervisors met for their regularly scheduled meeting on Monday afternoon after a time adjustment, and the main topic of discussion was the results of the Recreation and Child Care Needs Assessment Report.

Beth Danowsky presented the results to the Board of Supervisors, who are the last board in the county to see the results. After the presentation, Supervisor Mike VanderMolen said he believed the county wouldn’t be putting a ton of financial support into it since it was more for Oskaloosa, and it would only affect a few close communities in the county otherwise.

Vice-Chair Willie VanWeelden said there should be a representative from the board even if they don’t see a whole lot of funding because it is a project that affects the county as a whole. Chair Mark Doland said he’d like to be the representative on this board moving forward, and that will be voted on during the July 6 meeting.

In other business in a fairly routine meeting, the board heard from Troy Bemis about the new quotes to finish the work on the courthouse roof. The board also approved a resolution to trim up the miles used on the Farm to Market adjustment for County Road G5T. This will help in state funding to fix up this particular stretch of 23.81 miles, which are mostly in Mahaska County.

As the meeting was closing, VanWeelden mentioned it would be a good idea to start thinking about what they are wanting to do with the Country Life building after the closing becomes official next month. An item was added to the agenda for the next meeting.

The next meeting of the Mahaska County Board of Supervisors is scheduled for Monday, July 6th, at 9 AM at the Mahaska County Courthouse in Oskaloosa.

Kurt Busch Takes The Quicken Loans 400

Kurt Busch completed his family’s weekend sweep of the two races at Michigan International Speedway with a victory in Sunday’s rain-shortened Quicken Loans 400, one day after Kyle won the track’s X-FINITY Series race.

Kurt Busch had his Number-41 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet in front of the field when the race’s fourth red flag was displayed for rain that persisted throughout the afternoon over Michigan’s Irish Hills. It’s Busch’s twenty-seventh career win, second this season and third at M-I-S – for three different car owners: Jack Roush in 2003, Roger Penske in 2007 and now Gene Haas in 2015.

Dale Earnhardt Junior finished second and Martin Truex Junior third, giving Chevrolet a sweep of the top three spots for the third race in a row and six of the last seven. Matt Kenseth (Toyota) and Joey Logano (Ford) completed the top five. Pole sitter Kasey Kahne led only the second lap of the race and finished fifteenth.

Busch took the lead on Lap-133 when Kyle Larson was forced to pit after stretching his fuel as far as he could. Five laps later, the skies opened up and NASCAR subsequently called the race sixty-two laps short of its scheduled distance. With his third-place finish, Truex became the first Cup Series driver to open the season with fourteen top-ten finishes in the first fifteen races since Hall of Famer Richard Petty in 1969, eleven years before Truex was born.
