WARHAWKS UPSET BRAVETTES IN GIRLS BASKETBALL

Warhawks upset Bravettes in girls basketball

An upset in girls’ high school basketball.  North Mahaska, ranked fourth in Class 1A, defeated top-ranked and undefeated Montezuma 58-46 Monday night (1/27) in New Sharon.  Jade Hay scored 22 points for the Warhawks, including five three-point baskets.  North Mahaska Coach L.E. Moore said his team wanted to make up for a loss at Montezuma earlier in the season.

“We knew we could play a lot better than we did up there the first game of the year and we showed that.  We didn’t have Emma Tyrrel the whole game (due to a knee injury) and she’s one of our main forces.  But everybody stepped up, did some really good things in that fourth quarter because they made a good run at us.  Certainly, it was a good team victory for us and it just showed how much character these girls have.”

Shateah Wetering had 24 points for Montezuma.  North Mahaska improves to 11-2 on the year; Montezuma is now 13-1.  Don’t be surprised if these teams meet again in the State Tournament in March.
