  • Today in 1973, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s “Will The Circle Be Unbroken, Vols. 1 & 2” album was certified gold. The project also featured Roy Acuff, Mother Maybelle Carter, Earl Scruggs, Merle Travis and Doc Watson.
  • Today in 1990, Alabama’s “Pass It On Down” album was released.
  • Today in 1993, Dwight Yoakam’s album, “This Time,” was certified platinum.
  • Today in 1999, Mary Chapin Carpenter’s “Party Doll and Other Favorites” CD was released.
  • Today in 1999, John Michael Montgomery released the album, “Home To You.”
  • Today in 1999, nearly 70,000 readers of “Country Weekly” magazine choose George Strait as favorite entertainer, favorite male artist and favorite video entertainer in voting for the publication’s annual Golden Pick Awards. He also took honors for favorite album, favorite song and favorite line dance song.
  • Today in 2001, Brooks and Dunn‘s single, “Ain’t Nothing ‘Bout You” became the longest-running number-one hit of their career with its fifth week at the top of Radio & Records’ Country Top 50 chart.
  • Today in 2002, CBS aired the highly anticipated special, “Rockin’ For The USA,” which featured Clint Black, Lonestar, Celine Dion and others performing aboard the U.S.S. Harry Truman in Ft. Lauderdale.
  • Today in 2005, Garth Brooks proposed to Trisha Yearwood on one knee in front of more than 7,000 fans at the Crystal Palace in Bakersfield, California. She said yes. He then proceeded to sing “Amarillo By Morning” and “Friends In Low Places.”
  • Today in 2005, Carrie Underwood became FOX-TV’s “American Idol.” She performed the Martina McBride hit, “Independence Day” and sang “Bless The Broken Road” with Rascal Flatts at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.
  • Today in 2011, Scotty McCreery won FOX’s “American Idol,” singing “Live Like You Were Dying” on the episode with Tim McGraw. Runner-up Lauren Alaina duetted with Carrie Underwood on “Before He Cheats.”
  • Today in 2014, Brad Paisley made a surprise Memorial Day weekend appearance at Bagram Air Field in Afghanistan, performing for 3,000 U.S. troops before president Barack Obama delivered a speech. Paisley’s set included “Southern Comfort Zone,” “This Is Country Music,” “I’m Gonna Miss Her (The Fishin’ Song)” and “Alcohol.”
  • Today in 2016, Miranda Lambert closes her Pink Pistol retail store in Tishomingo, Oklahoma, announcing plans to expand the shop in Lindale, Texas. On the same day, ex-hubs Blake Shelton purchased the building.
  • Today in 2016, Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Chronicle (The 20 Greatest Hits)” was certified 10-times platinum by the RIAA.
  • Today in 2017, Kenny Chesney’s “All The Pretty Girls” hit the airwaves.
  • Today in 2017, Dan + Shay’s single, “Nothin’ Like You,” went gold, according to the RIAA.
