Authorities Investigating After Fatal Motor Vehicle Accident

(OTTUMWA, Iowa) – On Monday, April 02, 2018, at approximately 12:50 PM, personnel from the Ottumwa Fire Department and the Ottumwa Police Department responded to a single vehicle car accident that resulted in a grassfire near the Vine Street exit off of Highway 34/63 bypass.

It was determined that the driver of the motor vehicle went off of the roadway and their vehicle came to rest in the ditch area by Vine Street. The driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene and the body has been sent to the state crime lab for an autopsy.

The name of the driver is not being released at this time pending confirmation of the identity at the autopsy.

Ottumwa High School Student Arrested for Carrying Weapons

(OTTUMWA, Iowa) – On Thursday, March 8, at approximately 10:00 AM, Ottumwa Police Department School Resource Officers recovered a 9mm handgun from a student’s backpack at the Ottumwa High School.

The student was identified as Tyler Jordan Tucker, age 16, of 1420 E. Plum, Ottumwa. Tucker has been arrested and charged with Carrying Weapons on School Grounds, a Class “D” Felony.

Due to Tucker’s age and that this particular offense is a weapons violation, Tucker’s charge falls under the jurisdiction of adult court. Tucker was arraigned in Wapello County Magistrate Court and subsequently posted a $5,000 bond and was released from custody.

Ottumwa Man Arrested for Burglary, Resisting Police

On Tuesday, March 06, 2018, at approximately 3:23 AM, officers responded to 317 S. Milner, Ottumwa, on a possible burglary in progress call. Officers located a male suspect inside the basement area of the residence. The male refused to identify himself to police but was later identified as Christopher Garrett Allen, age 27, of Ottumwa.

Allen was arrested and charged with Burglary in the 2nd Degree, a Class “C” Felony and Interference with Official Acts (3 Counts), all simple misdemeanors.

Two Dead After Robbery/Car Crash in Ottumwa

(OTTUMWA, Iowa) – Two people are dead after an armed robbery and car crash last night in Ottumwa, according to authorities.

On Monday, February 26, at about 8:00 PM, the Ottumwa Police Department responded to the 1800 Block of Greenwood on a report that a pizza delivery driver had been robbed.

Upon their arrival, the victim was identified as Christian Garrett, 21, of Ottumwa. Garrett reported that after delivering a pizza in the area, he was assaulted by a man who stole the vehicle that Garrett was driving at the time of the assault. Garrett also had his face cut with a sharp instrument by the assailant during the robbery. Due to the nature of the event, Garrett was transported to Ottumwa Regional Health Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Shortly after the robbery was reported, a motor vehicle accident involving two vehicles was also reported near the intersection of HWY 34 and County Road T 61. According to the OPD news release, it was determined that the vehicle stolen from Garrett was involved. The suspect that was driving the stolen vehicle died as a result of injuries sustained in the collision. The other vehicle that was involved in the accident was occupied by one person and that person also died as a result of the incident.

The Iowa State Patrol in is charge of the motor vehicle accident investigation and the names of the suspect and the driver of the other motor vehicle involved in the accident will be released after next of kin has been notified.

Ottumwa BP Robbed at Gunpoint

(Ottumwa, Iowa) – Ottumwa police are looking for information after an armed robbery at the BP Service Station in Ottumwa. According to a news release sent by the Ottumwa Police Department, a clerk reported that the BP Service Station located at 1301 N. Court was robbed at gunpoint around 8:00 PM on Sunday, Feb. 18.

According to the release, a clerk reported that a male had entered the store displaying a handgun and demanded money. The clerk said the robber then stole money from the cash drawer. Unfortunately, the release stated that the thief wore clothing that would conceal his identity during the incident, therefore no details about his appearance have been released, aside from two photos taken from surveillance footage.

Drugs, Weapons Seized During Ottumwa Traffic Stop

(Ottumwa, Iowa) – In the early hours of Tuesday, Feb. 13, the Ottumwa Police Department performed a traffic stop on a vehicle near the intersection of Ferry and Chester in Ottumwa.

According to a news release, officers seized controlled substances and a loaded handgun as a result of this stop. The following people were arrested and charged with the following crimes:

Ryan Lawrence Gillen, 22, of Ottumwa, was arrested for: Possession with the Intent to Deliver More Than 5 Grams of Methamphetamine, a Class “B” Felony; Failure to Affix a Drug Tax Stamp, a Class “D” Felony; Carrying Weapons, an Aggravated Misdemeanor; Driving While Barred, an Aggravated Misdemeanor.

Theresa Ann Lomax, 43, of Ottumwa, was arrested for: Possession with the Intent to Deliver More Than 5 Grams of Methamphetamine, a Class “B” Felony; Failure to Affix a Drug Tax Stamp, a Class “D” Felony; Possession of a Firearm by a Felon, a Class “D” Felony; Prohibited Acts, Possession of Marijuana, a Serious Misdemeanor; Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, a Simple Misdemeanor.

Ottumwa Man Faces Charges After January Incident

(Ottumwa, Iowa) – According to a news release sent by the Wapello County Sheriff’s Office, the Sheriff’s Office and the Ottumwa Police Department executed a search warrant in Ottumwa at the beginning of January. As a result of the search warrant and investigation conducted at that time, Christopher Ray Cale, 41, was arrested. Cale is now charged with Violation of Protection Order a Simple Misdemeanor and Possession and Control of Firearms and Ammunition (Domestic/Protective Order) Class D Felony.

This investigation is ongoing and more information will be released as it becomes available. According to the news release, Cale bonded from the Wapello County Jail.

Three Arrested After Search Warrant Executed

On December 15, around 2:45 PM, the Wapello County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at 610 Wood St in Eldon. As a result of the search warrant three people were arrested:

71-year-old Ernest Weeks of Eldon charged with Possession, receipt, transportation, or dominion and control of firearms by a felon a Class D Felony bond was for the amount of $5,000, which Weeks posted.

Timothy Gillespie, 56, of Eldon charged with Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, FTA on Violation Restraining Order (3 counts), Carrying of weapons (City of Eldon) Discharge of Weapons (City of Eldon) all Simple Misdemeanors. Possession of Controlled Substance (2nd Offense) and Theft Third Aggravated Misdemeanor. Possession of Controlled Substance (Two or More Previous Convictions) a Class D Felony. Gillespie’s bond is $12,900.

32-year-old Carissa Bower of Eldon was charged with Possession Methamphetamine and Possession Marijuana both are Serious Misdemeanors. Possession of Drug Paraphernalia a Simple Misdemeanor. Bower’s bond was $2,000, which Bower posted.

Ottumwa BP Service Station Robbery

On Wednesday, December 20, 2017, shortly after 7 PM, the Ottumwa Police Department received a report of a robbery that occurred at the BP Service Station located at 1301 N. Court.

The clerk reported that a male suspect entered the store claiming to have a weapon and demanded money.

The suspect stole an undermined amount of cash from the register and several cartons of cigarettes. The suspect had his identity concealed with the clothing he was wearing during the incident.

Persons Arrested for Thefts from Multiple Vehicles

On Friday, December 15, 2017, the Ottumwa Police Department received several reports of unattended vehicles that had been rummaged through and items stolen from the vehicles. The crimes occurred in the area of Pennsylvania Place and the 1000 Block of East Pennsylvania. In total, 11 separate victims were identified as having property stolen from their vehicles.

The police department received a tip from a citizen that assisted police in the investigation of these car burglaries. The citizen tip ultimately led to the recovery of much of the stolen property. As a result of the investigation, the following persons have been charged:

Bridget Mary Logas, age 47, Ottumwa was arrested and charged with the following:

  • Using a Juvenile to Commit Certain Offenses, a Class “C” Felony
  • Aiding and Abetting Burglary 3rd (Theft from auto), 6 counts, all Aggravated Misdemeanors
  • Aiding and Abetting Burglary 3rd , a Class “D” Felony
  • Aiding and Abetting Theft 2nd Degree, a Class “D” Felony

Elijah Deshoun Sanders, age 17, Davenport, IA, was charged with the following:

  • Burglary in the 3rd Degree (Theft from auto), 10 Counts, all Aggravated Misdemeanors
  • Burglary in the 3rd Degree, a Class “D” Felony
  • Theft in the 2nd Degree, a Class “D” Felony
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, a Simple Misdemeanor

Sanders was also arrested on an outstanding arrested warrant out of Davenport for Robbery Second Degree.
