Two Dead After Robbery/Car Crash in Ottumwa

(OTTUMWA, Iowa) – Two people are dead after an armed robbery and car crash last night in Ottumwa, according to authorities.

On Monday, February 26, at about 8:00 PM, the Ottumwa Police Department responded to the 1800 Block of Greenwood on a report that a pizza delivery driver had been robbed.

Upon their arrival, the victim was identified as Christian Garrett, 21, of Ottumwa. Garrett reported that after delivering a pizza in the area, he was assaulted by a man who stole the vehicle that Garrett was driving at the time of the assault. Garrett also had his face cut with a sharp instrument by the assailant during the robbery. Due to the nature of the event, Garrett was transported to Ottumwa Regional Health Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Shortly after the robbery was reported, a motor vehicle accident involving two vehicles was also reported near the intersection of HWY 34 and County Road T 61. According to the OPD news release, it was determined that the vehicle stolen from Garrett was involved. The suspect that was driving the stolen vehicle died as a result of injuries sustained in the collision. The other vehicle that was involved in the accident was occupied by one person and that person also died as a result of the incident.

The Iowa State Patrol in is charge of the motor vehicle accident investigation and the names of the suspect and the driver of the other motor vehicle involved in the accident will be released after next of kin has been notified.

2000: The Dixie Chicks and country music powerhouse Shania Twain both take home awards during the 42nd annual Grammy Awards at Los Angeles’ Staples Center.

2010: American singer/TV host/actor/businessman Jimmy Dean is inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Dean rocketed to fame for his 1961 country crossover hit “Big Bad John” and his television series, The Jimmy Dean Show.

2014: American country and gospel music singer/actress Penny DeHaven dies at the age of 65.

Why Did Keith Urban Record ‘Female’?

Keith Urban has another Top Ten hit with “Female” and he says he knew it was going to be a special tune.

Urban says the song “spoke to me,” and he had quite a reaction the first time he sang it in the studio. He notes, “as I was singing it, I thought I feel like I’ve known this song my whole life.”

He adds, “I didn’t record it for any other reason than it was a heart reaction that I had to it.”

Mahaska County Wind Farm Now Complete

(MAHASKA COUNTY, Iowa) — MidAmerican Energy Company has announced that it has completed two new wind farms in Iowa that add 338 megawatts of wind generation capacity, with one of those farms located in Mahaska County.

According to a news release sent by MidAmerican, the Beaver Creek Wind Farm in Boone and Greene Counties as well as the Prairie Wind Farm in Mahaska County are now in operation. The 168-megawatt Prairie Wind Farm began generating electricity in the Fall 2017, with the final four megawatts put into service Jan. 2018.

Construction started in the spring of 2017, following approval by the Iowa Utilities Board in 2016.

“We’re committed to providing reliable service and outstanding value to our customers, and wind energy accomplishes both,” says Mike Fehr, vice president of resource development at MidAmerican Energy. “Wind energy is good for our customers, and it’s an abundant, renewable resource that also energizes the economy.”

The release states that MidAmerican Energy anticipates that renewable generation will equate to more than 90{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b} of its customers’ annual retail electricity usage by 2020.

Toby Keith Celebrating First Hit With A Tour

Toby Keith is celebrating the 25th anniversary of his first hit, “Should’ve Been A Cowboy,” with a new tour.

Keith is set to kick off the “Should’ve Been A Cowboy Tour XXV” on April 6, 2018, in Salt Lake City, Utah, wrapping up Sept. 25 in Puyallup, Washington, with additional dates to be announced soon.

Ottumwa BP Robbed at Gunpoint

(Ottumwa, Iowa) – Ottumwa police are looking for information after an armed robbery at the BP Service Station in Ottumwa. According to a news release sent by the Ottumwa Police Department, a clerk reported that the BP Service Station located at 1301 N. Court was robbed at gunpoint around 8:00 PM on Sunday, Feb. 18.

According to the release, a clerk reported that a male had entered the store displaying a handgun and demanded money. The clerk said the robber then stole money from the cash drawer. Unfortunately, the release stated that the thief wore clothing that would conceal his identity during the incident, therefore no details about his appearance have been released, aside from two photos taken from surveillance footage.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact the Ottumwa Police Department at 641-683-0661.

Readers should be advised that a criminal charge is merely an accusation and a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Scotty McCreery Gives Fans A Chance To Shape New Video

Scotty McCreery is giving fans a chance to play a role in his next video. The singer has teamed with Cracker Barrel Old Country Store for a new video contest for his new single “Five More Minutes.”

Fans are being encouraged to share a one-to-three minute video clip of people in their lives they want to spend more than five minutes with, and some of them may wind up in the video, which will premiere on Cracker Barrel’s YouTube channel March 15th. Video submissions are being accepted on the store’s website from now until March 5th.

What’s more, Cracker Barrel will sell Scotty’s new album “Seasons Change” beginning March 16th, with $1 from every sale going to Operation Homefront, which builds homes for military families.

Free ‘Introduction to Cholesterol’ Class

Mahaska Health Partnership is sponsoring a free class, “Introduction to Cholesterol” on Tuesday, Feb. 20 from 1 to 3 PM at Smokey Row in Oskaloosa. Attendees can learn the basics of cholesterol and why it’s so important, as well as how to improve cholesterol through lifestyle changes.
