Lowe’s is closing 51 stores in the US and Canada

In another sign of the times for retail, Lowe’s is closing 51 North American stores.  The home improvement chain said Monday that locations are underperforming and the decision will help the hardware chain focus on its most profitable stores and “improve the overall health of its store portfolio.”  Lowe’s (LOW) is shutting down 20 stores in the US and 31 in Canada. The company said that a “majority” of the shuttered stores are within 10 miles of another Lowe’s location.

The stores will be closed before Feb. 1, 2019. The company will try to find jobs at nearby stores for its employees affected by the closings.  “We believe our people are the foundation of our business and essential to our future growth,” said CEO Marvin R. Ellison.  Lowe’s is struggling to keep up with its larger rival Home Depot. Ellison, who joined the company in May, has already made some big strategic decisions, including closing all of its Orchard Supply Hardware stores and slashing inventory at its Lowe’s stores.  The company cut its sales and profit outlook for the year. Its next earnings report is on November 20.

Hy-Vee coupon scam alert

If you shop at Hy-Vee, you could be tempted by a coupon making the rounds on social media—but it’s a scam.  The coupon is supposedly good for $80 of free groceries at Hy-Vee.  Kevin Rausch with the Oskaloosa Hy-Vee store says the coupon is fake.

“We have heard about this and we are making sure that everybody does know that this is a fake coupon. It was made up by somebody else.  We did not put this out at all for anybody to try and promote anything. It is a scam going around. I believe they’re just trying to get extra information or maybe get into some Facebook accounts, but this was not authorized by Hy-Vee whatsoever on that.”

There’s no word on who created the fake coupon site and what it’s being used for.

Tennessee death row inmate put to death by electric chair

Death row inmate Edmund Zagorski died at 7:26 p.m. CDT Thursday after Tennessee prison officials electrocuted him with the electric chair. He was 63.  He is the 134th person put to death by Tennessee since 1916 and the second person this year.  He is the first person to die by electric chair since Daryl Horton’s execution in 2007.

Zagorski was convicted in the April 1983 murders of two people. Prosecutors argued Zagorski lured them into the woods in Robertson County with the promise to sell them marijuana, and then he shot them, slit their throats and stole their money.  Two minutes before it was set to begin at 7 p.m., the U.S. Supreme Court denied Zagorski’s appeal on the grounds of the unconstitutionality of choosing between the electric chair and lethal injection.

Eight people believed to be family members of the victims entered the prison to witness the execution.  They waited in front of a covered large window that looked into the execution chamber where on the other side of the glass Zagorski sat pinned in the electric chair, held down by buckles and straps with electrodes fastened to his feet.  The blinds opened for the rest of the witnesses to see Zagorski dressed in his cotton clothes, smiling and grimacing to the group.  Zagorski pronounced his last words: “Let’s rock.”  He sat smiling in the wired chair as prison staff placed a wet sponge, which had been soaked in salt, and a metal helmet on his freshly shaven head.
