Dustin Hite elected as State Representative

New Sharon Mayor Dustin Hite has been elected State Representative for House District 79, covering Mahaska County and part of Marion County.  Hite, a Republican, defeated Democrat Samantha Keith by nearly a three to one margin.  Hite talks about the campaign.  “It was a great campaign.  It was a lot of fun to get out and meet a lot of voters, knocking on doors, going to events.  I hope to continue that moving forward.  Obviously, being a representative of the people, it’s important, I think, to get out there, talk to voters, see what is important to them and where they fall on the issues and I look forward to doing that in the future.”

Hite says the New Sharon City Council will decide at its meeting tonight how to fill the upcoming vacancy for mayor, when Hite leaves that job early next year.

In the area’s other races for State Representative, Republican Holly Brink defeated Democrat Susan McDaniel 63 percent to 36.5 percent to win District 80; Republican Jarad Klein defeated Democrat Kimberly Davis to win District 78; Republican Jon Thorup won House District 28 over Democrat Ann Fields and in District 76, Republican David Maxwell defeated Democrat Ann Egley.

Local County Board election results

There will be one new supervisor on the Mahaska County Board.  Incumbent Republican Steve Wanders and Republican Steve Parker were elected Tuesday (11/6) over Democrat Paul DeGeest and Scott Van Veldhuizen, who was nominated by petition.  Wanders talks about his priorities for the future.  “Going forward….I’m going to work on secondary roads and mental health.  Those are the two biggest issues…and then just keep the taxes as low as we can and keep our roads in the best shape that we can.”

Steve Parker came in second behind Wanders in Tuesday’s vote.  Parker says he wants to repair the County Board’s relationship with the City of Oskaloosa.  “I’m looking forward to just getting things going, keeping things going and patch up the differences that we can and work together. We’re split right now and it’s not good for the whole county.  We need to sit down and resolve the situation.”  Parker will replace Mahaska County Board Chairman Willy Van Weelden, who did not run for re-election.

In Keokuk County, Daryl Wood and Michael Hadley won the two seats on the County Board, defeating Roger Snakenberg.

Kisha Jahner defeated Stanley Bingham for the only contested seat on the Marion County Board.

In Powesheik County, Merle Doty and Jason Roudabush won the two seats up for grabs on the County Board, defeating two other challengers.

Brandon Talsma and Denny Carpenter won the two seats available on the Jasper County Board.

And Jerry Parker was re-elected to the Wapello County Board of Supervisors.

Four types of Duncan Hines cake mix recalled due to salmonella outbreak

A recall was issued for four types of Duncan Hines cake mix due to possible salmonella contamination, the US Food and Drug Administration said Monday.

The voluntary recall was issued by Conagra Brands due to “a positive finding of Salmonella in a retail sample of Duncan Hines Classic White cake mix that may be linked to a Salmonella outbreak that is currently being investigated by CDC (US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and FDA,” Conagra said in a statement.  The DNA fingerprint found in that sample of cake mix matches the DNA fingerprint identified by the CDC in five cases of salmonella illness, according to the FDA.

Several of the individuals who are sick told health investigators they consumed cake mix before their symptoms began, according to Conagra.   Symptoms of salmonella illness usually begin 12 to 72 hours after consuming something tainted with the organism and last about four to seven days. They include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. Most individuals recover without treatment. In some patients, diarrhea can be so severe that hospitalization and antibiotic treatment are required to prevent the illness from spreading from the intestines to the bloodstream and elsewhere in the body.

Conagra noted that some of the sick individuals could have eaten the mix raw rather than cooked. “Consumers are reminded not to consume any raw batter. Cake mixes and batter can be made with ingredients such as eggs or flour which can carry risks of bacteria that are rendered harmless by baking, frying or boiling,” the Conagra statement said.  “While it has not been definitively concluded that this product is linked to the outbreak and the investigation is still ongoing, Conagra has decided to voluntarily recall the specific Duncan Hines variety identified (Classic White) and three other varieties (Classic Butter Golden, Signature Confetti and Classic Yellow) made during the same time period out of an abundance of caution,” the company said.

The recalled cake mixes were distributed nationwide and to some international exporters. They are all 15.25 oz boxes of mix.
The recalled white cake mix has best if used by dates of March 7, 8, 9, 10, 12 and 13, 2019 and the UPC code 644209307500.
The recalled yellow cake mix has best if used by dates of March 9, 10, 12 and 13, 2019 and the UPC code 644209307494.
The recalled butter golden cake mix has best if used by dates of March 7, 8 and 9, 2019 and the UPC code 644209307593.
The recalled confetti cake mix has best if used by dates of March 12 and 13, 2019 and the UPC code 644209414550.

“The FDA is advising consumers not to bake with or eat any recalled cake mix,” the agency said. Retailers should no longer sell these recalled mixes and consumers who have recalled mixes should contact Duncan Hines or the store where the mix was purchased for a refund.
The agency also reminded consumers to wash hands, utensils and work surfaces well after using raw batter. In addition, the FDA said, consumers, should follow baking instructions and “never eat raw batter.”   As part of the ongoing investigation into the outbreak, the FDA said it is inspecting the Conagra facility where the recalled cake mixes were produced and collecting environmental samples there.

Brett Young and Taylor Mills tie the knot

It seems like Brett Young popped the question to his girlfriend Taylor Mills yesterday (even though it was actually in February) and now they’re already married. In fact, Mills has made it officially official by changing her Instagram handle.  The wedding was on Saturday (Nov. 3) at the Bighorn Golf Club in Palm Desert, California. According to People magazine, they had about 200 guests, and Young’s father Brad officiated at the ceremony.  Young and Mills exchanged their own vows, and after that they danced their first dance as husband and wife to “Forever Young.”

Mills wore a Justin Alexander Signature custom long-sleeved gown (“It just really embodies me,” she said). And Young wore an all-black, single-breasted J. Hilburn tuxedo with a black bow tie.  “Being able to be best friends with a person you’re going to spend the rest of your life with is the most important thing. She has a very pure, kind heart,” Young said.

November 6th: On this day

On this day in 2006, The Country Music Association awards aired for the first time on ABC.   The awards show had been on CBS since 1972. Keith Urban, who won the Male Vocalist of the Year, was absent due to his rehab stint, and co-host Ronnie Dunn read Urban’s acceptance letter. Hall of Fame inductee Kris Kristofferson presented the inductions for 2006 inductees George Strait, Harold Bradley and Sonny James, each of whom gave brief acceptance speeches; Strait also performed his #1 hit “Give It Away.” Controversy reigned when Faith Hill appeared to react angrily after Carrie Underwood won the Female Vocalist of the Year award.
