Kid Rock plays Santa Claus at a Wal-Mart in Nashville

Tyler Perry may have started it, but Kid Rock just put a big red bow on the trend.

He paid off everything that was on layaway at a Walmart store in Nashville. He tweeted after he did it, probably so that he could get the trend to start trending. He’d followed Perry’s lead, so maybe others will have enough holiday spirit in their hearts to do the same. We could call it the #LayawayGiveaway.

Kid Rock’s bill at the Walmart at 3458 Dickerson Pike was $81,000, according to CNN. But anyone could walk into any Walmart and pay off a portion of the layaway bill.  When Perry started it, he tried to do it anonymously. But the good word spread, so he posted a video on Twitter last week confirming the news, saying that he’d paid off the layaway items at two Walmarts in Georgia: one in East Point and one in Douglasville. His total bill was reportedly $430,000.

Wintry storm ices roads across much of US Southeast

A lingering storm kept dumping immobilizing snow, sleet or freezing rain across five southern states, leaving dangerously icy roads and hundreds of thousands of people without electricity. Authorities urged people to stay home Monday in areas where driving was dangerous.

Accidents on snow-covered interstates caused major delays Sunday, hundreds of flights were canceled and drivers in North Carolina and Virginia got stuck in snow or lost control on icy patches. But the commuters’ nightmare provided pre-winter thrills for kids and the young at heart, who were able to go sledding and build snowmen in places that don’t often see so much of the white stuff.

The National Weather Service said a “prolonged period of snow” began late Saturday and would last until Monday in the region, with the heaviest snow in northwest North Carolina and southern Virginia. Some areas of North Carolina and Virginia saw more than a foot (30 centimeters) of snow by Sunday afternoon.

More than 300,000 power outages were reported across the region, with North Carolina bearing the brunt of it, and nearly 270,000 remained without power Monday morning, according to poweroutage.us. South Carolina and Virginia, along with parts of Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee, also saw outages.

Senator Ernst to run for a second term

Iowa U.S. Senator Joni Ernst of Iowa says she will run for a second term in 2020.  Ernst told reporters Friday that she would seek re-election. The Republican also said she will support President Donald Trump for re-election in 2020.  The 48-year-old military veteran from Red Oak was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2014 after serving four years in the Iowa Senate. She succeeded Senator Tom Harkin, a veteran Democrat, who retired from politics.  No one has yet announced a challenge to Ernst’s re-election bid, but Iowa Democratic Party Chairman Troy Price said Democrats will put up a fight when she runs for re-election.

Today is the 77th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor

Today, December 7th marks the 77th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor. This was a pivotal day for the U.S. and one that ultimately led to the U.S. entering World War II.  Seventy-seven years ago the Japanese Imperial Navy struck Pearl Harbor Naval Base, in Honolulu Hawaii, in a surprise attack. This lasted only an hour and 15 minutes but killed more than two-thousand Americans and injured more than a thousand. U.S. airplanes and battleships were destroyed.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt addressed the Nation that day saying, “December 7, 1941- a date which will live in infamy. The United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.” One day later the U.S. declared war against Japan.

This year, the Pearl Harbor Commemoration Ceremony at the USS Arizona in Hawaii will be different from any other before. For the first time, there will be no survivors of Pearl Harbor attending the ceremony. The handful that survived the battleship bombing on this day, in 1941, are now all in their nineties. Last year, 3 of the 5 remaining members of the USS Arizona were able to attend but this year, they aren’t able to make it because of health issues.
