Oskaloosa ready for second stage of revitalization

Oskaloosa city planners are ready for the second stage of their downtown facade revitalization program.  This phase will cover businesses on the west side of Oskaloosa’s downtown square.  Architect Tyler Baumgarten with Curtis Architecture in Ottumwa talks about the construction timeline.

“Construction starting in the spring of ’19.  With this size a project, we would like to see it done by this time next year. Weather definitely plays a major factor in that.”
A $450,000 Community Development Block Grant will be used to help pay for the renovations.

Trial postponed for Oskaloosa Police officer

The domestic abuse trial of an Oskaloosa Police officer has been postponed again.  You might remember Janay Pritchett was arrested in May for allegedly cutting her girlfriend’s neck with a knife.  Court records say it happened during a drunken dispute.  Pritchett was supposed to have a pre-trial conference on December 20, but that has now been pushed back to January 3.  She remains on administrative leave from Oskaloosa Police.  Pritchett’s trial was moved to Powesheik County on a change of venue.

Bush, president and patriarch, is home for Texas burial

George H.W. Bush, who shaped history as 41st president and patriarch of a family that occupied the White House for a dozen years, is going to his final rest Thursday in Texas.

More than 11,000 people paid their respects to Bush as his casket lay in repose all night at a Houston church where his family worshiped. Some visitors waited for hours to pay tribute to Bush, who will be buried Thursday following a funeral at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church.

The country said goodbye to him Wednesday in a national funeral service that offered high praise for the last of the presidents to have fought in World War II — and a hefty dose of humor about a man once described as a cross between Mister Rogers and John Wayne.

After three days of remembrance in Washington, a plane brought Bush’s casket for his funeral’s closing ceremonies in Houston and burial Thursday at his family plot on the presidential library grounds at Texas A&M University in College Station. His final resting place is alongside Barbara Bush, his wife of 73 years, and Robin Bush, the daughter they lost to leukemia at age 3.

Musco provided special lighting for President George H.W. Bush’s funeral

“Our team is proud to have the opportunity to be a part of recognizing somebody who has been this great for our country.”
That’s Musco Lighting President Joe Crookham talking about the Oskaloosa-based company providing special lighting outside the US Capitol for President George H.W. Bush’s funeral.  Crookham says Musco got the call Saturday morning (12/1) to go to Washington.  By Sunday night (12/2), two trucks staffed by three people had the lighting up and shining.  Crookham says Musco’s past experience with television networks helped them get this job.
“We have been working with them for many years and so it’s very common when they need something of that sort that they call us. NBC was the one heading up the operation for all the television people.  it’s become pretty commonplace for us to do that sort of thing.”

Crookham adds that Musco also set up mobile lighting when President Bush was inaugurated in 1989.

The nation bids farewell to former President George H.W. Bush today

The nation’s capital is bidding its final farewell to former President George H.W. Bush on Wednesday in a service of prayer and praise that has drawn together world envoys, Americans of high office and many others who were touched by Bush’s life in office and afterward.  The hearse had been driven in a motorcade to the Washington National Cathedral ceremony, slowing in front of the White House. Bush’s route was lined with people much of the way, bundled in winter hats and taking photos.  A military color guard stood at attention as the hearse arrived.

Wednesday’s ceremonies capped three days of remembrance in the nation’s capital by dignitaries and ordinary citizens as they honored the Republican president who oversaw the post-Cold War world transition and led a successful Gulf War, only to lose re-election in a generational shift to Democrat Bill Clinton in 1992.

The four living ex-presidents all came — among them, George W. Bush who will eulogize his father — and President Donald Trump will attend but is not scheduled to speak. Also attending: one king (Jordan), one queen (Jordan), two princes (Britain, Bahrain), Germany’s chancellor and Poland’s president, among representatives of more than a dozen countries.

Trump tweeted Wednesday that he was “looking forward to being with the Bush family,” calling the day “a celebration for a great man who has led a long and distinguished life.” Trump and his wife took their seats after the others, briefly greeting the Obamas seated next to them.

Also expected in the invitation-only crowd: Mike Lovejoy, a Kennebunkport electrician and fix-it man who has worked at Bush’s Maine summer estate since 1990 and says he was shocked and heartened to be asked to come.
