Black Oak Clays allowed to file application for shooting range
The Mahaska County Board has allowed a shooting range in Black Oak Township to fill out an application to be in business. As of now, the County has no zoning regulations for a shooting range. Mahaska County Board Chairman Mark Groenendyk says the owners of Black Oak Clays will have 60 days to fill out the application.
“It’s the same thing what any office would request the information for: the hours of operation, the use, the intended use of it, how far away the shot or the ammunition that’s being used would travel. Just the basic information in a regular permit that would normally be filled out to be considered.”
Many people who use the shooting range spoke to the County Board, saying the clay shooting program is good for their children to take part in. People who live near Black Oak Clays, like Mark Doschadis, say there are downsides to the shooting range.
“It’s…basically what I’ve stated is an intrusion into the quality of our life and the privacy and enjoyment of our own place. When you can hear shots inside your shower in the house and 20,000 of them a day, it’s quite a different than going out there, having fun and shooting and driving home.”
Groenendyk says once the application is completed, the County Board will go over it and the public will want to have its say.

4 pups of endangered species of wolf born at Chicago zoo
CHICAGO (AP) — Four pups of a critically endangered species of wolf have been born at Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago.
The zoo says in a news release that the two male and two female red wolf pups were born April 13 — the first new litter of red wolf pups at the zoo in nearly a decade.
Curator Dan Boehm says the arrival of the pups comes at a time when scientists estimate there are fewer than 30 red wolves left in their native habitat of North Carolina.
The wolves — named for their red-tinged fur —have over the years been driven to the brink of extinction by hunting. The zoo is taking part with other zoos in a Red Wolf Species Survival plan to increase the red wolf population.
One injured in crash between two semis
“The semi was laying across the highway in front of me…..in the dark…and I had no place to go.”
That’s what Kevin Moorman of Baxter saw as he was going east on Highway 163 west of Pella around 5:40 Thursday morning (5/2).
“I guess I made a decision to slide, move over, try to avoid the accident, but I had no place to go. I went from the right lane to the left hand lane, then I went through the trailer instead of hitting her tractor head on. Because otherwise, there probably would have been two dead bodies laying here.”
And according to an Iowa State Patrol Trooper the No Coast Network spoke to, if Moorman had been driving a regular car, instead of a semi, there could have been two fatalities. As it is, Moorman was shaken up, but not injured. The driver of the other semi has not been named, but we’re told she was taken to a Pella hospital with minor injuries. The eastbound lanes of 163 between 198th and 195th Streets were blocked to traffic for most of the morning while Iowa DOT personnel cleared the accident scene.
Wood Iron Grille makes Iowa’s best burger
Iowa’s best burger can be found in Oskaloosa. The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association announced Wednesday (5/1) that the Wood Iron Grille makes the best burger in the state. Wood Iron Grille executive chef and co-owner Michael Glesener explains how their burger came out on top.
“From February through March, there was open voting. So anybody could vote their favorite restaurant in the top ten. And so we got voted into that. And then they (the Cattlemen’s Association) sent out a panel of judges to do a secret testing of each restaurant in the top ten. Those judges select the winner.”
Without giving away any trade secrets, Glesener says what makes their burger so good is that the staff makes their burgers with love. By the way, Wood Iron Grille has only been open for seven months, so that’s quite a feather in their chef’s hat.
Mahaska County to get new park benches
The Friends of Mahaska County Conservation has received a $2000 grant to buy park benches that are made from recycled plastic bags. The grant comes from the Iowa Grocery Industry Association’s Build with Bags program. Rodney Anderson with Friends of Mahaska County Conservation tells us where the new benches will go.
“We’re looking at between our memorial money and the grant, to buy benches for the Environmental Learning Center, the new one in Mahaska County, and at Caldwell Park. And we’re looking at benches for the outside and the inside.”
According to the Iowa Grocery Industry Association, one bench represents about 10,600 bags that would have otherwise ended up in a landfill.
Breather for Iowa riverside city? Heavy rain not expected
DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — A meteorologist says there’s not much risk of rainfall heavy enough to further raise the Mississippi River flood threat in eastern Iowa.
A temporary flood barrier failed in Davenport on Tuesday, submerging downtown blocks and forcing some people to seek shelter on rooftops. They later were evacuated by boats.
Davenport City Administrator Corri Spiegel declined to comment early Wednesday about any overnight developments.
Scattered showers are in the forecast for Wednesday, but National Weather Service meteorologist Alex Gibbs said chances of a thunderstorm system that could bring heavy rain are “pretty low.” The service isn’t warning of severe weather upstream either.
The river is expected to crest Wednesday evening or overnight at 22.4 feet (6.83 meters) in Davenport, short of the record crest of 22.6 feet (6.9 meters) set in July 1993.
