Tim McGraw Facing Criticism From Gun-Rights Advocates

Tim McGraw is facing criticism from gun-rights advocates for headlining a show benefitting Sandy Hook Promise. McGraw has responded saying, “As a gun owner, I support gun ownership. I also believe that with gun ownership comes the responsibility of education and safety – most certainly when it relates to what we value most, our children. I can’t imagine anyone disagrees with that.”

Unemployment Appeals Administrator Leaves In Iowa Shakeup

The new director of Iowa Workforce Development is cutting ties with a longtime agency employee who was recently named head of the division that oversees unemployment insurance disputes.

Director Beth Townsend told employees Monday she will follow guidance from the U.S. Department of Labor and make the job overseeing administrative law judges available only to lawyers. The job is being posted Monday.

Townsend says 26-year employee Steve Slater has left the department. Slater was promoted to the administrator job months ago by then-director Teresa Wahlert but isn’t a lawyer.

The Department of Labor last month said that Wahlert created perceived pressure on judges to favor employers over workers. Wahlert laid off the administrator who oversaw judges in 2013 and took on that role herself before naming Slater to the job.

Oskaloosa Boys’ Golf Finish Second

The Oskaloosa boys’ golf team fought through less-than-stellar conditions to have a great finish at Lincoln Valley Golf Course in State Center last night. The Indians finished in second place as a team in a very tightly contested tournament, winning a tiebreaker over Grinnell and beating Norwalk by just one stroke. Nevada was the team title winners at 316, 17 strokes better than Osky.

The Indians were led by Spencer Tucker, who shot an 80 to finish in 5th place. Andrew Brouwer was right behind him with an 81, which landed him 10th.

The boys’ golf team is right back at it for the Indians, as they face off against Pella Christian and Dallas Center-Grimes at Beaver Creek Golf Course this afternoon. The meet starts at 4 PM.

Oskaloosa Girls’ Track and Field Finish Second

The Oskaloosa girls’ track and field team was back in action in Bondurant, and had a solid team outing, finishing second. Pella was the team champion, with Bondurant-Farrar third and Knoxville fourth in the eight school field. Sienna DeJong had the performance of the night, lapping the field en route to the victory in the 3000 meter run. She finished in a time of 11 minutes and 28 seconds.

Next up for the track and field teams is the Drake Relays, which begin tomorrow in Des Moines.

Oskaloosa City Council Meeting

The Oskaloosa City Council met for its regularly scheduled meeting on Monday evening at the Oskaloosa City Hall and the main topic discussed was once again the initiative to make Oskaloosa a healthier and more inviting community for recreation.

The meeting began with public comments. Several citizens addressed the council regarding their support for adopting a resolution on the plan put together by the Oskaloosa Bicycle Initiative. The plan, named “Walk, Run, Ride Oskaloosa: Oskaloosa’s Active Transportation Plan,” was supported by each community member, hoping the council would be taking a step toward improving sidewalks and making Oskaloosa more friendly for biking and walking around town. Every member of the community who stepped to the microphone was in favor of the council taking positive action toward the item on the agenda.

When the item was reached, the council heard the full presentation for the outline of the plan that would make Oskaloosa safer for cyclists and pedestrians and create a network of paths and trails that could get these citizens to all parts of Oskaloosa safely. The cost of the proposed outline as it stood was 6.1 million dollars. 83 percent of that would be toward sidewalk installation and renovation. 14 percent would be going to crosswalk improvement. And the other 3 percent would be dedicated to bike lanes and bike racks around town.

After the presentation, council member Jason Van Zetten immediately questioned why the Coalition would bring this kind of plan to the council for that price, saying that is way to high for this kind of action. Council member Aaron Ver Steeg (ver-STEGG) said there is really no need to go out of the way to put this kind of plan into action, since things have been fine for bikers and pedestrians for a while. Both council members said there were portions to the sidewalk renovations and additions that could be addressed, but they were not in support of the plan as it stood.

All other council members were receptive to pass the resolution and talk about each detail as it comes up. Council member Doug Yates explained that the Oskaloosa Bicycle Coalition is full of bright people of the community and if they thought it was a good idea, he respects their wisdom on the subject.

After lengthy discussion, the council voted 5-2 in favor of passing the resolution, with Van Zetten and Ver Steeg voting no. This action is not to pass the plan as a whole, but only to proceed with the progressions of the project at a later date as more concrete details get ironed out.

In other action, the council reviewed a situation regarding city code with vehicles parked on grass in Oskaloosa, which has resulted in some community members being cited with warnings and fines. Council members Ver Steeg and Van Zetten think “common sense” should win out, and that if someone is parking on their own property and it is not creating grotesque looking lawns, they should not be fined.

Fire Chief Mark Neff and City Manager Michael Schrock both explained that the council would have to change the law, but using the term “common sense” is too vague, and cannot be defined. The code will still be enforced as it is in the law until the council acts on the code to make amendments.

The minutes of the meeting can be viewed on www.oskaloosaiowa.org.

The next meeting of the Oskaloosa City Council is scheduled for May 4th at 6 PM at the Oskaloosa City Hall.

Statemen Baseball Wins One, Loses Two Against AIB

The Statesmen baseball team got back on the field Monday, going 1-2 against AIB in Midwest Collegiate Conference play.

The day began with William Penn (18-21, 8-11 MCC) defeating the Eagles 11-10 in a game postponed since Saturday. AIB (21-21, 16-8 MCC) then finished off the long night by sweeping a doubleheader (originally scheduled for Sunday) with scores of 4-0 and 3-1.

WPU 11, AIB 10

The navy and gold were behind 5-0 entering the bottom of the second, but turned the table on AIB with six runs in their at-bats. Cory DeRush highlighted the big frame with a two-run double.

The Eagles answered with one in the third, but Robert Phiakeo put the home team back up as his two-RBI single helped WPU to three runs to make it 9-6 in the bottom half.

The rain came and washed the spider–correction, the game–out. The contest resumed Monday afternoon with AIB striking first with one run in the top of the sixth. William Penn got it right back, though, as William Vazquez doubled in a run.

The Eagles would unfortunately not go quietly, tying the game at 10-10 in the top of the seventh. Fortunately, the Statesmen had the last laugh by loading the bases. Phiakeo then served as the hero with a game-winning single to plate DeRush.

DeRush paced the Statesmen by going 4-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Phiakeo was 2-for-4 with three RBIs in a game that featured AIB outhitting WPU 12-10. Patrick Roxbury also managed two hits, while pinchrunner Chris Bartmann rounded the pads twice.

Connor Sutton walked four times and J.P. Rios, who scored three times, drew another three bases on balls; William Penn batters were walked 11 times total. The home team overcame four errors.

Jacob Logan tossed Saturday’s four innings, while Matt Vasquez finished the game off with the final three frames. Vasquez claimed the win and since he had only worked a trio of innings, the senior had enough left in his tank to start the second game of the day.

AIB 4, WPU 0

Vasquez pitched well in his five-inning outing, striking out six, but unfortunately was on the hook for the loss. He fell to 4-2 on the season.

The Statesmen had little success at the plate, putting runners in scoring position in the first and fifth only to leave them stranded both times. WPU lost the hitting battle 6-3 and committed four more fielding mistakes.

Logan relieved Vasquez and hurled a pair of innings.

AIB 3, WPU 1

The hosts continued to have issues in the field with five errors. William Penn scored first when Sho Serrano led off the second with a single and later came around on a wild pitch.

That was all she wrote for WPU, however, as the Eagles scored once in the third, fifth, and seventh innings. Sutton was perfect at the plate, finishing 2-for-2, but his team was outhit 6-4.

Starter Tyler Martinez gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits. The junior (1-3) struck out three, but walked four in five innings. Cole Williams managed four strikeouts in two frames out of the bullpen.

Next Up: William Penn travels to La Crosse, Wis. Wednesday to finish off a suspended game from April 7.

Mahaska County Board of Supervisors Meeting

The Mahaska County Board of Supervisors had their regularly scheduled meeting Monday morning at the Mahaska County Courthouse and bookkeeping was the chief topic discussed with a very busy agenda.

The Board heard from Brad Reiman regarding the health plan renewal for Mahaska County. This discussion lasted nearly 55 minutes before the Board unanimously approved all of the plans for the renewal for the county employees.

The Board next heard a conservation report, which noted that the Eveland Access ground is open and 19 of the 23 lots were taken on the first weekend. The county is also close to acquiring 93 acres of land north of New Sharon, which cost $5,000 from the county.

The Board also approved payroll changes for the Sheriff, Assessor, and the County Attorney’s office.

Supervisor Mike VanderMolen said he would talk with City Manager Mike Schrock to iron out any issues regarding the cost of the new facilities proposed by the Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter. The Board will discuss the specifics and vote on how much to offer at a later date.

Full minutes of Monday morning’s meeting are accessible at www.mahaskacounty.org.

The next meeting of the Mahaska County Board of Supervisors will be on May 4th in the third floor conference room of the Mahaska County Courthouse on the square in Oskaloosa. The meeting will be called to order at 9 AM.

William Penn Softball Splits with Viterbo

Entering Sunday’s Midwest Collegiate Conference doubleheader against Viterbo, the William Penn softball team had an outside chance of rallying for the league title.

Unfortunately, those hopes took a big hit as the Statesmen (16-25, 9-7 MCC) split with Viterbo, winning 12-3 (5 innings) and falling 12-7. With just eight games left in their MCC slate, the navy and gold are five games back of first-place Grand View (15-3). The squad is still in good position to host a first-round game in the league tournament, sitting four games up on fifth-place AIB (seeds 2-4 host seeds 5-7 in one game on April 30).

The visitors wasted little time in jumping all over the V-Hawks (5-30, 3-16 MCC), scoring six runs in the second inning of the opener. WPU took advantage of a two-out error to tally five unearned runs.

Two more runs came across in the third as pitcher Brittanee Grove helped out her own cause with a two-run double.

Marissa Pereyra drove in two on a fourth-inning home run and Grove matched her with her own two-run bomb in the fifth. William Penn outhit Viterbo 13-5 and was assisted by four fielding mistakes by the home team.

Grove finished 3-for-4 with five RBIs and two runs scored; the home run is the second of the year for the senior. Pereyra, who was 2-for-2 (2 RBI, 2 R), left the park for the first time this season.

Ashlee Dennis was 2-for-3 (2 R), while Bri Zerley managed a 2-for-4 effort. Jorden Steele and Sydney Edwards scored twice in the victory.

Grove was touched up a bit late, but her run support easily made up the difference. The southpaw (9-6) permitted two earned runs, while striking out two and walking two.

The plate success became contagious in the nightcap with the two sides combining for 24 hits (13-11 WPU). Unfortunately, it was Viterbo which caught a stronger strain of the bug. The hosts scored three times in the first, four in the second, and three more in the third to pull out to a sizeable margin.

WPU tried to keep pace, coming up with three runs in the second and two more in the third. Zerley sent her team-leading sixth homer over the fence in the second, while Edwards and Brooklyn Bantz each had RBI singles. The lone error of the game helped the visitors to both of their marks in the third.

Steele then powered through an offering in the sixth, recording her fifth home run of the campaign, but the rally fell short. Taylor Vernon had a 3-for-4 outing, while Edwards was 2-for-3 and Pereyra was 2-for-4. Steele finished with two RBIs and Zerley touched home plate twice.

Lack of command by WPU’s two hurlers doomed the Statesmen as Viterbo drew nine walks in the game.

Next Up: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa Tuesday to host St. Ambrose in an MCC doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.

William Penn Women’s Track and Field Have A Big Day

The William Penn women’s track and field team put together a load of great performances as it hosted the Statesmen Relays Saturday.

Of the 17 contested events, a member of the Statesmen squad topped the field 10 times.

Meaghan Foster was a two-time champion, winning the shot put at 41-3.25 and the hammer at 127-9.

Courtney Dalton was also first twice, winning the 200-meter dash in 26.89 seconds and leading the 100 prelims in 12.86 seconds (results from the 100 finals are not available at this time).

Other running titles went to Tarah Alexander (1:03.01 in the 400-meter dash), Addison Kepner (2:31.69 in the 800-meter run), and Cassandra Kingery (16.21 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles).

The 4×100 (51.81 seconds) and 4×400-meter relay squads (4:34.22) were also victorious.

Alyssa Phillips and Alora Simmons tied for the high jump title at 4-9, while Whitley Schertz was best in the pole vault at 8-0.5. Emma Hoerr took the discus crown at 126-9.

Next Up: William Penn travels to Indianola next Friday and Saturday to compete in the Simpson Kip Janvrin Open.
