William Penn Men’s Golf Finishes Third

The Statesmen men’s golf team put together two more solid rounds in preparation for the league tourney as it competed at the Central Methodist Open Monday and Tuesday.

William Penn finished third out of 12 teams with a two-day tally of 615 (312-303) at the par-71 Hail Ridge Golf Course. In a field filled with six future Heart of America Athletic Conference squads, Culver-Stockton (Mo.) won the title at 595 (300-295).

Brock Derrick of Evangel (Mo.) was the individual medalist at three-over 145 (73-72).

Gareth Sargent was the top Statesmen linkster, tying for eighth out of 70 players with a score of 150 (77-73).

Tyler Lallier and Clay Tucker were second on the varsity squad in a tie for 20th at 155. Lallier posted scores of 78-77, while Tucker had an 82 followed by a 73.

A 157 (77-80) put Frederik Lundsgaard in a tie for 29th, while Spencer Skipper was 46th overall at 162 (80-82).

WPU’s JV team competed as well, finishing seventh at 620 (314-306) with Byron Lindeque tying for 11th at 151 (76-75). Justin Bothma matched Lallier and Tucker at 155 (79-76), while Jeremy Swink ended the event at 158 (82-76) to tie for 32nd.

Jeremy White (T-38th, 77-82–159) and Ben Roberts (T-55th, 89-79–168) were also in the mix at the Open.

Next Up: William Penn travels to Riverside next Tuesday and Wednesday to compete in the Midwest Collegiate Conference Championships. Play will be contested at Blue Top Ridge Golf Course.

Statesmen Softball Sweeps St. Ambrose in Doubleheader

Dominating pitching led the Statesmen softball team to a doubleheader sweep over St. Ambrose in Midwest Collegiate Conference play Tuesday.

William Penn (18-25, 11-7 MCC) won by scores of 7-1 and 1-0. The wins helped the navy and gold leapfrog the Queen Bees (21-18-1, 10-7 MCC) into third place in the league standings.

The home team, which avenged its own sweep back on April 1, got on the board immediately with two runs in the first highlighted by an RBI single by Bri Zerley.

Gabrielle Braniff then led off the second with a double and later scored to extend the edge to 3-0.

A solo home run off Brittanee Grove in the fifth inning narrowed the margin to two, but proved to be the only tally for St. Ambrose. Grove (10-6) permitted just one run on three hits, while striking out two and walking one.

WPU remained up 3-1 entering the sixth, but then blew it wide open with a four-run bottom half. Nine batters stepped into the box in the frame.

Braniff finished 2-for-2, while Sydney Edwards was 2-for-3 and Jorden Steele was 2-for-4. Steele scored two times and Ashlee Dennis also drove in two runs. The navy and gold held a 10-3 edge in base knocks.

Despite getting runners on base in every half inning but one, neither program could bring a player around until the bottom of the sixth; WPU actually loaded the pads in the fifth.

Marissa Pereyra led off the sixth with a walk and got to third with no outs yet recorded, but was caught in a botched suicide squeeze play. Fortunately, Edwards made up for her batting gaffe by singling up the middle to plate pinch runner Siarra Velasquez. Velasquez was on the bases for Chelsee Herron who doubled in the second at-bat of the inning.

Herron was 2-for-3 in the contest, while Pereyra was 1-for-1 with two walks. Grove was also 1-for-2 with a walk as William Penn outhit SAU 6-5.

Lunden Young nearly gave the run right back as she allowed the bases to be packed in the top of the seventh. Fortunately, she secured the victory with a fly out to lock up her fourth shutout of the year. The senior (7-11) limited the Queen Bees to five hits and managed five strikeouts against three walks.

Next Up: William Penn travels to Des Moines, Wednesday, to face AIB in an MCC doubleheader at 3 pm.

Oskaloosa Boys’ Soccer Beat Grinnell

The Oskaloosa boys’ soccer team hosted Grinnell last night and both the varsity and JV had successful nights.

The varsity squad got the win 2-1. Grinnell jumped out to an early lead by scoring a goal only 7:30 minutes into the game. Ean Honeycutt found the net for the Tigers. The Indians kept their heads in the game and played well together as a group. With nine minutes left in the 1st half Rogan Skutka scored Oskaloosa’s first goal.

The second half was a close battle, but Colton Berg put the Indians ahead with a late goal with about 12 minutes left. Grinnell kept surging and created several good scoring opportunities in the closing minutes of the game, but the defense led by Brady DeJong and Ben Boston, with 12 saves held them in the final minutes.

The JV saw the Indians get a 2-0 win over the Tigers. Kirkland Howard and Isaac Parks scored goals and Dylan Grubb made 9 saves for Oskaloosa.

Next up, the boys’ and girls’ soccer teams will host Centerville in a doubleheader Thursday at the Lacey Recreation Complex. Action starts with the girls at 5:30 PM.
