Holley Iron Man Series set for Sioux Center June 4, ready for Rock Rapids June 5

WEBSTER CITY, Iowa-Featuring both USRA Stock Cars and USRA B-Mods, the Holley Iron Man Series will be in action this Thursday, June 4, at the Sioux Speedway in Sioux Center, Iowa, and Friday, June 5, at the Rapid Speedway in Rock Rapids, Iowa.

USRA Stock Cars will be racing for $1,000 to win both nights while the USRA B-Mods are battling for $750 to win each night.

Thursday’s event at the Sioux Speedway will feature the inaugural Mouw Motor Company Summer Celebration as the Holley Iron Man Series makes its first visit to the big dirt oval located at the Sioux County Fairgrounds.

The Sioux Speedway started as a figure-8 track in 1972. The track made the transition to a 3/8-mile oval one year later before transforming to the current semi-banked 1/2-mile configuration. Making a return to auto racing and several years without high-horsepower action, Sioux Speedway held its first “modern era” race in 1998 and continues the yearly tradition of hosting auto racing events.

The track has a wide racing surface with speeds reaching over 100 mph. The infield is lighted and has adequate room for pitting without unloading as well as room to pit outside the facility if necessary. Lighting was added in 2995, making night racing an exciting addition.

Grandstands open at 6 p.m. and racing begins at 7:30 p.m. sharp. Tickets are just $12 for adults, $8 for seniors ages 60 and older, $5 for kids ages 9-12 and children ages 8 and under get in for free. Pit passes are $25. Hobby Stock will also be on the racing card.

The Sioux Speedway is located 1 mile east of Hwy. 75 on 7th St. NE in Sioux Center, Iowa (at the Sioux County Fairgrounds). For more information call 712-722-2512 or check them out online at www.siouxspeedway.net. You can also like the track’s page on Facebook at www.facebook.com/sioux.speedway.

On Friday, the Rapid Speedway will host the first of two Holley Iron Man Series events at the popular semi-banked 3/8-mile dirt oval located at the Lyons County Fairgrounds.

Spectator tickets will be just $10 for adults, $5 for kids ages 7-14 and free for children ages 6 and under. Pit passes will be $25. Pits open at 5:30 p.m. and spectator gates open at 6 p.m. Hot laps start at 7 p.m. and racing will start at 7:30.

The Rapid Speedway is located 0.5 miles east of US 75 on SR 9, then 0.5 mile south on South Tama St. For more information call 712-472-2067, visit them on the World Wide Web at www.rockrapidsspeedway.com or check them out on Facebook at www.facebook.com/RapidSpeedway.

Prosecutor: Iowa officers fired shots at approaching vehicle

A prosecutor says two Iowa police officers fired shots at a vehicle from close range after the driver sped in their direction following a pursuit.

Jefferson County Attorney Tim Dille says investigators believe the officers’ shots struck the vehicle carrying a 19-year-old driver and his 16-year-old female passenger but didn’t hit either occupant.

The driver, 19-year-old Dakota Murray, was jailed on charges of eluding law enforcement. The passenger wasn’t charged.

Dille says Murray fled from an officer who tried to pull him over in Fairfield early Tuesday. After a roughly 15-mile pursuit, Murray’s vehicle spun out and ended up in a ditch. Dille says that when officers approached the vehicle to take him into custody, Murray drove at them in a “reckless manner” before they opened fire.

Jimmie Johnson Wins Fed-Ex 400

Jimmie Johnson easily managed three late restarts that helped send the race past its scheduled distance Sunday afternoon at Dover International Speedway, driving away to his series-leading fourth win of the season. It’s also the six-time champion’s tenth victory on “The Monster Mile,” easily topping the track’s all-time win list. Among active drivers, Jeff Gordon is second with five.

Johnson beat runner-up Kevin Harvick to the checkered flag by a half-second with Kyle Larson, Kasey Kahne and Aric Almirola completing the top five. Johnson started fourteenth and led just once all day – the final twenty-three laps in the Number-48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. Johnson’s seventy-fourth career Cup Series victory lifted him from fifth to third in the 2015 regular-season standings. He trails leader Harvick by seventy-six points.

Martin Truex Junior led a race-high 131 laps and finished sixth to maintain his hold on second place. He’s forty-four points off the pace heading into the next race next weekend in Pocono, Pennsylvania … With the win, Johnson becomes the first driver with back-to-back victories in Dover’s springtime Cup Series race since Hall of Famer Bobby Allison won two straight in 1982 and 1983.

Chevrolet claimed the top four finishing positions in Sunday’s race and eight of the top ten. The only non-Chevy cars in the top ten were Almirola’s Ford and Clint Bowyer’s Toyota, which placed ninth.

Sunday’s race included fifteen lead changes among nine drivers. There were seven cautions for forty laps.

Oskaloosa Softball Beats Grand View Christian, Remains Undefeated

The Oskaloosa softball team was in action last night against Class 1A Grand View Christian and took care of business, getting the big win 12-0 in only three innings of play.

Oskaloosa’s offense scored only two runs in the first two innings, but blasted 10 runs in the third to get to the run rule threshold. Aubrey Miller led the Indians with four RBI, including a walk-off three run double to end the game.

The schedule will stiffen up this week, however, with Centerville coming to town on Thursday and Pella Christian kicking off the conference season on Friday.

Mahaska County Board of Supervisors 6/1/15

The Mahaska County Board of Supervisors met for their regularly scheduled meeting and several bookkeeping items were addressed as we prepare for the new fiscal year on July 1st.

Among these, the Board approved the May bills, renewed the Heartland Risk Pool, approved the projected cost report for Targeted Case Management, approved a new computer maintenance agreement with Solutions Inc. and approved a resolution for Secondary Roads to get the G5T county road, which was formerly Highway 102, to the Farm to Market designation to get more grants to fix the road.

In other business, Chair Mark Doland said he heard a few complaints about the Farmer’s Market shutting down half of First Street in front of the courthouse during Tuesday afternoon and taking up the parking spaces. Vice Chair Willie Van Weeldon and Supervisor Mike VanderMolen disagreed, saying it wouldn’t hurt to try it out this year to get more traffic to the Farmer’s Market and then see what they should do moving forward. Doland also said it was more of a matter for the City Council, but felt it was important to at least address those concerns since it involved the county’s courthouse.

In other items, the Board unanimously reappointed Fred Bridges the Veterans Affairs Commissioner and approved a pay raise for Assistant County Attorney Bradley Kinkade in an effort to solidify and stabilize that position. Kinkade’s new salary is $55,000. He recently finished his probationary period.

The next scheduled meeting of the Mahaska County Board of Supervisors is Monday, June 15th at 9 AM in the Mahaska County Courthouse in Oskaloosa.
