Marion County Fair Association Finalizes Knoxville Raceway Management Staff

KNOXVILLE, IOWA  – The Marion County Fair Association has finalized the management staff of Knoxville Raceway for the 2016 racing season. Spire Sports + Entertainment, a leading athlete management and consulting company in the motorsports industry, has joined Race Director John McCoy and Business Manager Gary Schumacher to manage revenue, sales, marketing and public relations for the 5/8-mile central Iowa track.
“Effective immediately Kendra Jacobs, of Spire Sports + Entertainment, will fill the role as Marketing Manager for the speedway,” said Dennis Hasselhuhn, Marion County Fairboard President. “Kendra has extensive experience in motorsports public relations, management and promotions in the sport and a long history in sprint car racing. We’re looking forward to having her, along with her passion and commitment to the sport, join us here in Knoxville.”
Jacobs has worked in motorsports since 2002 in both NASCAR and sprint car racing. She is also co-host of MRN’s and MAVtv’s “Winged Nation” which covers sprint car racing across the country.
“Knoxville Raceway is the premier dirt track in the country,” Jacobs said. “Not only do I respect the track for its quality of racing and high-profile events but I also have an emotional attachment to the community and the atmosphere that I’ve been lucky to be a part of since I was a child. Knoxville is a leader in the industry and we’re looking forward to working with John (McCoy) and Gary (Schumacher) to bring in new partners, more fans and further promote its status in the sport.”
Knoxville Raceway recently announced its 2016 schedule which boasts the 56th Annual FVP Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s General Stores on August 10-13, sprint car racing’s most prestigious and high-paying event. The 13th Annual Lucas Oil Late Model Nationals move up one weekend to September 15-17. The 360ci sprint cars will once again take to the track for the 26th Annual Arnold Motor Supply 360 Nationals onAugust 4-6.
General admission will be $15 for adults and free for children ages 12 and under for regular shows throughout the 2016 season. Men’s Bowling Makes A Run At The Bracket, Women’s Unable To Reach

The William Penn men’s bowling team made a run in bracket play at the ISYL Leatherneck Classic Saturday and Sunday.

William Penn was seventh out of 31 teams in qualifying with 8,853 pins, while Lindenwood (Mo.) took the top seed with 9,388 pins.

As the #7 seed, the Statesmen knocked off #2 McKendree (Ill.) 2-1 in the quarterfinals of bracket play, but could not get past #3 Wisconsin-Whitewater in a 2-1 loss.  UW-W eventually defeated Lindenwood 2-1 in the championship.

Jacques Kaune (Sr., Anchorage, Alaska, Business Management) was the navy and gold’s best in the 306-person field with a 199.2 average.

The remaining four members of WPU’s varsity also averaged over 190 pins during the weekend.  Quincy Bruce (So., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, General Accounting) led the quartet at 196.3, while Michael Applegate (Sr., Council Bluffs, Iowa, Secondary Education) was at 194.5.  Stian Hoff (Jr., Orkanger, Norway, General Accounting) had a 194.2 average and Nick Walker (Fr., Zeeland, Mich., Business Management) owned a 192.3 clip.

WPU’s second team competed as well, finishing 11th out of 17 teams in the JV division with 8,200 pins.

Cory Rissman (Sr., Yorkville, Ill., Industrial Technology), at 197.3, and Connor Frederick (Sr., Ottumwa, Iowa, History/Government), at 178.6, both started six games, whileJason Forsyth (Fr., Weatherford, Texas, Business Management) started five rounds with a 196.5 mark.

Rylie Reidel (So., Knoxville, Iowa, Business Management) (174.0), Ryan Racimo (Jr. Olympia, Wash., Exercise Science) (173.0), Curtis Majka (So., Elgin, Ill., Mechanical Engineering) (168.3), and
Cody Adair (Jr., Kearns, Utah, Industrial Technology) (145.7) all started three games.  Kevin Wesely (Sr., Mount Pleasant, Iowa, Industrial Technology) knocked down 136 pins in his lone game.

Next Up: William Penn takes two weeks off before traveling to Madison, Wis. on December 5-6 to compete in the Ebonite Warhawk Open.

 

The Statesmen women’s bowling squad battled hard, but was unable to reach bracket competition at the ISYL Leatherneck Classic Saturday and Sunday.

William Penn was 12th out of 23 teams in qualifying with 7,738 pins, while Wichita State (Kan.) took the top seed with 8,907 pins.  #5 seed St. Ambrose upset WSU in the semis en route to eventually winning the title.

Stephanie Adams (Jr., Souris, Manitoba, Business Management) tied for 24th out of 202 bowlers with a 188.2 average.  Montana Pence (Sr., Stronghurst, Ill., Elementary Education) started in six games as well, posting a 173.3 clip.

Cybil Lennie (So., Ottumwa, Iowa, Undecided) paced the remaining group with an average of 164.8 pins (five games), while the trio of Briell Newberry (So., Holland, Mich., Secondary Education) (158.0), MacKenzie Boyd (Jr., Knoxville, Iowa, Human Services/Sociology) (156.7), and Audra Farley (So., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Education) (148.3) each started three games.

Cheyanne Starr (Fr., Ottumwa, Iowa, Psychology), at 181.5, and Amber Ovel (Fr., Waterloo, Iowa, Business Management), at 156.5, both had a pair of starts at the Classic.

Next Up: William Penn takes two weeks off before traveling to Madison, Wis. on December 5-6 to compete in the Ebonite Warhawk Open.

Under The Radar Music: Webb Wilder

I’ve decided to do something a bit different in the coming weeks and share some of my favorite “alt-country” and Americana artists who tend to fly under the radar.

First up is “The Last Of The Full-Grown Men”, Webb Wilder. The Character of Webb Wilder was originally invented for a short film about a backwoods private detective who fell out of the ’50s and happened to also be a musician. He decided to hang onto the personna, and has had a career as a musician since the mid-1980s. Here’s one of his tunes that got a tiny bit of airplay on music video channels. A tongue-in-cheek little number called “Human Cannonball”… Enjoy!

Sunday’s victory for Dale Earnhardt Junior is his third of the season and the twenty-sixth of his career – three of which have come at Phoenix International Raceway. The first two were back-to-back in 2003 and 2004 … Among active drivers, “Junior” is now third on the track’s win list behind Kevin Harvick (seven) and Jimmie Johnson (four).

Chevrolet has won five straight Sprint Cup Series races at P-I-R and six of the last seven … Johnson started from the pole, led the first forty-four laps and finished fifth in Sunday’s race.

Thus far, all nine post-season races this year have been won by drivers who were on the original sixteen-man Chase Grid.

Statesmen End Year at #23

Oskaloosa–The William Penn football team finished the 2015 campaign in the top 25 as the NAIA released its final rating Sunday.

The Statesmen (7-4, 3-2 North) fell four spots from last week to 23rd with 38 points (Faulkner is tied with WPU).  The navy and gold unfortunately could not extend its season to the playoffs, while the Heart of America Athletic Conference will be represented in the NAIA Football Championship Series by #2 Baker (Kan.) and #3 Grand View.

Morningside (340 points, 14 first-place votes) enters postseason action at #1, while Baker, Grand View, Saint Francis (Ind.) (final first-place vote), and Montana Tech round out the top five.

Service Providers Fear Fee Cuts Under Medicaid Privatization

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The plan to privatize Iowa’s Medicaid services beginning in January includes a new payment scheme that cuts reimbursements for some organizations helping people with physical, mental or developmental disabilities. Some care providers say the loss is enough to force smaller organizations to close, leaving the people they serve scrambling to find services.

Mental health centers and organizations providing services for people with physical or intellectual disabilities say the Iowa Department of Human Services new payment plan is unworkable for some.

A mental health center in Creston expects to lose $150,000 and a nonprofit provider in Burlington faces a loss of about $168,000.

The DHS says the new pay structure simplifies reimbursements and is not intended to cut payments. The agency says it will work with providers facing lower reimbursements.

Next Stop Phoenix International Raceway

Next stop Phoenix International Raceway for Sunday’s Quicken Loans Race for Heroes 500, the next-to-last race of the 2015 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup and the final stop in the three-week Eliminator Round. For the eight drivers remaining in the title hunt, there are just 312 “Miles-2-Miami.”

The twelfth edition of the post-season Chase will conclude November 22nd at Homestead-Miami Speedway, at which time only four drivers will remain in championship contention …With his victory November 1st at Martinsville Speedway, Jeff Gordon has assured himself of a spot in The Championship Four in South Florida. But at least two of the remaining berths will be filled based on the post-season point standings and right now, Martin Truex Junior and Carl Edwards are separated by just seven points in a fight for fourth place.

Five of the eight drivers remaining in the Eliminator Round of the Chase have won at least one Cup Series race in Phoenix: Gordon (in 2007 and 2011), Edwards (2010 and 2013), Kurt and Kyle Busch (both in 2005), and Kevin Harvick – who’s won the last four races on the one-mile desert oval and five of the last six dating back to the end of the 2012 season
