Arrest Made in Oskaloosa Meth Bust

Sunday around 4:00 p.m. members of the Mid-Iowa Narcotics Enforcement Task Force with the assistance of the Oskaloosa Police Department executed a drug search warrant at 206 6th Ave East in Oskaloosa where numerous “One Pot” methamphetamine drug labs were seized.

As a result of the search warrant, 32 year old Robert Carl Williams was taken to the Mahaska County Jail on drug charges awaiting initial appearances. He’s charged with manufacturing methamphetamine and failing to affix a drug tax stamp.

Manufacturing methamphetamine is a class B felony and failing to affix a drug tax stamp is a class D felony.

Residences from the apartment building were evacuated and were able to return to their homes around 6:30 p.m. 3 animals located in the apartment were taken to the shelter by the Animal Rescue League.

Assisting the task force at the scene was the Oskaloosa Police Department, Oskaloosa Fire Department Hazmat, Mahaska County Ambulance and the Animal Rescue League.

As a reminder, a criminal charge is merely an accusation and all defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Mahaska County Sheriffs Office Incident Report

On March 12th, 2016, the Mahaska County Sheriffs Office was dispatched to 1593 290th Street rural Mahaska County in reference to a gunshot wound.

When officers arrived they discovered a 13 year old male with a gunshot wound. Mahaska County Sheriffs Office investigated this incident and determined that this was an accidental shooting and that he succumbed to his injury.

NASCAR X-Finity Series runs The Axalta Faster.Tougher.Brighter. 200 this weekend on Saturday afternoon. Daniel Suarez of Joe Gibbs Racing has the early-season lead in the standings by three points over Elliott Sadler. Ty Dillon, rookie Brandon Jones and Justin Allgaier complete the top five. Suarez has opened the season with three straight top-ten finishes including second place (behind Busch) last weekend in Vegas.

Pole sitters won both races last year at Phoenix, with Joey Logano victorious in March and Busch in November. A good qualifying effort is essential to success on the Arizona oval. Twenty-five of the twenty-eight race winners in the X-FINITY Series have started eighth or better … Thanks in large part to the efforts of Busch, Toyota has won five of the last seven races. Chevrolet is seeking its first X-FINITY Series win at P-I-R since Sadler was victorious in 2012.

Former Statesmen Harrison Cashes In With Giants

New York, N.Y.–Damon Harrison has worked extremely hard to become one the best interior defensive linemen in the National Football League and is now going to be compensated for those efforts as he signed a free-agent contract with the New York Giants this week.

The former William Penn football player (2008-2011) from Lake Charles, La. inked a five-year contract worth $46.25 million ($9.25 million per year), including $24 million guaranteed and $30 million over the first three seasons of the agreement.

He spent his first four years in the professional ranks with the New York Jets, who paid him $2.2356 million as a restricted free agent this past season.  For the Jets, the undrafted Harrison tallied 193 total tackles (105 solos, 88 assists) in addition to 1.5 sacks, two pass breakups, and one forced fumble.  In 2015, the defensive tackle managed 72 stops, and was ranked the No. 1 run defender by Pro Football Focus with a grade of 97.3.

Back in his days in the navy and gold, Harrison was a three-time all-MSFA Midwest League selection (first team as a senior).  His senior campaign included 60 tackles with a team-high 8.5 for loss.

Eric Pasley Debuting New Video For “High Class”

Eric Pasley is set to debut the new music video for his current single “High Class.” The video for the song has an exclusive Vevo world premiere today (3/11). The video was shot in a few of Nashville’s downtown hot spots, where Eric had no problem showing off some of his dance moves. For the video shoot, Pasley also brought along a few of his high class friends who star with cameo appearances.

Next Stop Phoenix International Raceway

Next stop Phoenix International Raceway  for Sunday’s Good Sam 500, fourth race of the 2016 Sprint Cup Series and the second of three straight in the western United States. Brad Keselowski was victorious last weekend in Las Vegas and will arrive in Phoenix in search of his first Cup Series win on the one-mile oval. He has one victory there in the X-FINITY Series, in 2014.

Teams will get ninety minutes of practice Friday morning before qualifying late this afternoon. Ryan Newman holds the track record for poles with four including three straight from 2002 through 2004 … Kevin Harvick rolls into the weekend as a favorite to notch his first victory of the young season. The 2014 champion has won five of the last seven Cup Series races contested at P-I-R, including a streak of four straight that was halted by Dale Earnhardt Junior last fall. Harvick leads all drivers with seven wins in Phoenix, three more than his nearest challenger – Jimmie Johnson.Kyle

Kyle Busch has opened with a strong defense of his 2015 championship, posting three straight top-five finishes and leading the early-season standings by seven points over Harvick and Johnson – who are tied for second place.

Busch has one Cup Series win at Phoenix, in 2005. He’s won eight times in the X-FINITY Series and is entered this weekend to make his bid for a ninth victory.

Eastern Iowa Man Sentenced To Prison In Child Porn Case

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — An eastern Iowa man was sentenced to 30 years in prison after he admitted to receiving and possessing child pornography.

U.S. Attorney Kevin Techau announced a federal district court judge in Cedar Rapids sentenced 43-year-old Michael Cottrell of Reinbeck to federal prison Thursday.

Cottrell pleaded guilty in October to one count each of receiving and possessing child pornography.

Cottrell was also ordered to pay $500 restitution, and he must serve a 20-year supervised release term. He must also comply with all sex offender registration requirements.

At his plea hearing Cottrell admitted that he received child pornography and kept it on his computer between 2012 and 2014.

Bakken Pipeline Receives Permit

The Dakota Access Bakken pipeline has received approval from the Iowa Utilities Board (IUB) after months of deliberating, coming in the form of a 174-page order.

Not only did the IUB approve a permit for the pipeline, but the Iowa Department of Natural Resources did as well. The Iowa DNR found no long-term environmental impact from the pipeline where it crosses public land, such as the Des Moines and Mississippi rivers.

The pipeline will run from northwestern Iowa to southeastern Iowa, and will go through multiple area counties. Mahaska County will see the most of the pipeline, with 32.54 miles. It will travel more than 343 miles through 18 counties, from Lyon County in northwest Iowa to Lee County in southeast Iowa. Area counties affected are Jasper, Mahaska, Keokuk, Wapello, Jefferson, and Van Buren.

A series of informational meetings were held in area towns and cities prior to formal hearing before the IUB late last year. Those opposed to the Bakken pipeline say there are risks to having 500,000 barrels of crude flow through an underground pipeline. Those in support of the pipeline have cited economic impacts from its construction, which some estimate could be as much as $1 billion.

The IUB did not give a specific number for the pipeline’s impact on Iowa’s economy, although it did conclude about $800 million will be brought in during the construction phase. Dakota Access will also pay between $25 million and $27 million in property taxes per year. The board also said that revenue, as well as job creation, added weight in support of the project. It has been estimated 2,000 to 4,000 jobs will be created in Iowa during construction, although only 12-15 permanent jobs will be needed in Iowa once the pipeline is finished to operate it.

Dakota Access stated it would see eminent domain to construct the pipeline if it can’t come to an agreement with landowners.

According to state officials, the pipeline will be buried in farm fields so that the top of the pipe is either 2 feet below any drain tiles, or at least 48 inches deep, whichever is lower. Dakota Access has promised to repair damage to farm fields to crops can once again be planted in the field.

The last permit for Dakota Access to get is from the Army Corps of Engineers.

Pella Christian Falls in Semifinals, Will Play for 3rd Place at State

The most efficient defense in the state of Iowa in Class 2A showed exactly why they earned that mark Thursday afternoon.

Cascade of Western Dubuque, the #4 seed in the tournament, took full advantage of an undersized Pella Christian front line and closed the three point line to get a 51-36 win.

#8 seed Pella Christian battled gamely during the first half, as the lead exchanged hands 8 different times. But PC’s patient offensive attack was unable to get consistent looks inside the arc and the shots from downtown were contested regularly by the long and active Cougar defense.

The Eagles’ defense did the job they needed to, limiting the chances Cascade had inside. But their inability to score with any consistency on the offensive end led to their demise.

Levi Jungling, PC’s best scorer at over 20 points per game, was held to just 5 points on 2 of 9 shooting. Mitch Fopma led the Eagles with 13.

Pella Christian will play Anamosa in the 3rd Place Consolation Game at 11:45 AM on Friday morning. Cascade will face Western Christian for the Class 2A State Championship Friday night at 8 PM.
